  • In Japan, at least 28 local winds are known by name, most of them associated with downslope windstorms and gap winds. To review these windstorms, we categorize them based largely on the atmospheric conditions and formation mechanisms, and then focus on representative examples. These representative cases include the "Yamajikaze", a typical downslope windstorm, the "Hirodo-kaze", a downslope windstorm induced by a nearby typhoon (intense tropical cyclone), and the "Karak-kaze", a downslope wind with a clear diurnal variation. Other downslope winds such as the "Inami-kaze" and the gap wind "Kiyokawadashi" are also described. Among these winds, the "Yamaji-kaze", "Hirodo-kaze", and "Kiyokawa-dashi" are considered the three most notorious due to their destructive power. After describing and comparing these winds, we discuss remaining issues to be considered in future studies.

  • Because several winds cause the a fault of transmission supply, KEPCO trys to protect the the trouble and supply the power stably. Kepco find out the weak mountains by winds and strengthen the power equipment annually. Power quality is the competition power in the international world and satisfy the customer using th power Therefore this paper deals with the fault relation between winds and transmission line.

  • To determine tornadic wind loads, the wind pressure, forces and moments induced by tornadoes on civil structures have been studied. However, in most previous studies, only the individual building of interest was included in the wind field, which may be suitable to simulate the case where a tornado strikes rural areas. The statistical data has indicated that tornadoes induce more significant fatalities and property loss when they attack densely populated areas. To simulate this case, all buildings in the community of interest should be included in the wind field. However, this has been rarely studied. To bridge this research gap, this study will systematically investigate the influence of a community of buildings on tornadic wind fields by modeling all buildings in the community into the wind field (designated as "the Community case under tornadic winds"). For comparison, the case in which only a single building is included in the tornadic wind field (designated as "the Single-building case under tornadic winds") and the case where a community of buildings are included in the equivalent straight-line wind field (designated as "the Community case under straight-line winds") are also simulated. The results demonstrate that the presence of a number of buildings completely destroys the pattern of regular circular strips in the distribution of tangential velocity and pressure on horizontal planes. Above the roof height, the maximum tangential velocity is lower in the Community case under tornadic winds than that in the Single-building case under tornadic winds because of the higher surface friction in the Community case; below the roof height, greater tangential velocity and pressure are observed in the Community case under tornadic wind fields, and more unfavorable conditions are observed in the Community case under tornadic winds than under the equivalent straight-line winds.

  • The coiling station of ISP coil box is an equipment that winds a hot bar rolled at reduction unit into a coil without mandrel. In the coiling process, the roll gap of the bending unit is a significant one of several factors that influence bar coiling. To obtain a good bar-coil, the roll gap must be set appropriately according to the bar thickness. In this study, with 2-dimensional isothermal elastic-plastic finite element method, authors investigated influence of the change of the roll gap on the initial coiling shapes and the formed inner diameters of coils. Based on finite element analysis, authors proposed the appropriate roll gap according to the bar thickness to be able to wind a hot bar. The inner diameters of coils by results of analysis comparatively agreed with coling operation conducted in plant.

  • Strong downslope windstorms often occur in the Liguria Region. This part of North-Western Italy is characterised by an almost continuous mountain range along its West-East axis consisting of Maritime Alps and Apennines, which separate the Padan Plain to the North from the Mediterranean Sea to the South. Along this mountain range many valleys occur, frequently perpendicular to the mountain range axis, where strong gap flows sometimes develop from the top of the mountains ridge to the sea. In the framework of the European projects "Wind and Ports" and "Wind, Ports, and Sea", an anemometric monitoring network made up of 15 (ultra)sonic anemometric stations and 2 LiDARs has been realised in the three main commercial ports of Liguria. Thanks to this network two investigations are herein carried out. First, the wind climatology and the main statistical parameters of one Liguria valley have been studied through the analysis of the measurements taken along a period of 4 years by the anemometer placed at its southern exit. Then, the main characteristics of two strong gap flows that occurred in two distinct valley of Liguria are examined. Both these studies focus, on the one hand, on the climatological and meteorological characterisation of the downslope wind events and, on the other hand, on their most relevant quantities that can affect wind engineering problems.

  • Extremely strong winds and heavy rainfall caused canopy gaps in a mixed Abies holophylla broadleaf forest and a Quercus mongolica-dominated forest in Odaesan National Park, Korea in October 2006. The impact of the combination of strong winds and torrential rain on the development of forest gaps and canopy structures were investigated. The mean size of newly created gaps were $205m^2$ in the mixed forest and $86m^2$ in the Quercus forest, and were created by 2.8 and 1.4 gapmaker trees, respectively. Among the 73 trees lost in the mixed forest, 59% succumbed because of direct wind damage while 41% were struck by neighboring trees that fell into them. Most of these trees downed by wind were uprooted (74%), while the trees downed by neighboring tree falls snapped (78%). 21 trees in the Quercus forest died from direct wind damage, and 57% of them were uprooted. Although the relative density of Abies nephrolepis and A. holophylla represented only 0.2% and 6.4%, respectively, of all species in the intact mixed forest, they accounted for 27% and 15%, respectively, of all trees affected by wind on that site. In fact, 85% of the total A. nephrolepis and 91% of the total A. holophylla in the mixed forest fell directly due to strong wind. By contrast, only one Abies species, A. nephrolepis, was found in the Quercusdominated forest, and it accounted for 7.3% of the species composition. These findings suggest that A. nephrolepis and A. holophylla are particularly susceptible to high winds because of their great heights and shallow root systems.

  • This paper presents numerical results of pedestrian-level wind environment around the base of a row of tall buildings by CFD. Four configurations of building arrangement are computed including a single square tall building. Computed results of pedestrian-level wind flow patterns and wind speeds are compared to previous wind tunnel measurement data to enable an assessment of CFD predictions. The CFD model uses the finite-volume method with RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model for turbulence closure. It is found that the numerical results can reproduce key features of pedestrian-level wind environment such as corner streams around corners of upwind building, sheltered zones behind buildings and channeled high-speed flow through a building gap. However, there are some differences between CFD results and wind tunnel data in the wind speed distribution and locations of highest wind speeds inside the corner streams. In locations of high ground-level wind speeds, CFD values match wind tunnel data within ${\pm}10%$.

  • In this paper, discharge characteristics of air in the vertical arrangement of three rods(dome-shaped, cylinder-shaped, and needle-shaped rod) and plane gap having propane flame on the plane electrode are examined under the application of a.c. and d.c. high-voltages. As the result of the experiment, flashover voltages in the presence of the flame are substantially lowered than those in the absence of flame, and relative a.c. flashover voltages in the dome-shaped, cylinder-shaped, and needle-shaped rod gaps are found 32.5%, 32.1%, and 26.4% respectively. The polarity effects with the d.c. voltages are shown, and flashover voltages in negative polarity are much lowered than those in positive one. The negative flashover voltages in the dome-shaped and cylinder-shaped gaps are found 18.3% and 18.7% respectively, but the positive ones are found 53.5% and 43.2% respectively. In the needle-shaped rod gaps, meanwhile, the flame is extinguished by corona wind, and the quenching voltages are found 28.4% under the application of a.c. voltages. The ion winds of corona and the reduction of air density are the main factors of flashover reduction owing to the flame in the case of a.c. voltages, but the electrifications of the positive ion by thermal ionization besides the above factors are remarkably found in the case of d.c. voltages.

  • The generalized extreme value distribution (GEVD) is frequently used to fit the block maximum of environmental parameters such as the annual maximum wind speed. There are several methods for estimating the parameters of the GEV distribution, including the least-squares method (LSM). However, the application of the LSM with the expected order statistics has not been reported. This study fills this gap by proposing a fitting method based on the expected order statistics. The study also proposes a plotting position to approximate the expected order statistics; the proposed plotting position depends on the distribution shape parameter. The use of this approximation for distribution fitting is carried out. Simulation analysis results indicate that the developed fitting procedure based on the expected order statistics or its approximation for GEVD is effective for estimating the distribution parameters and quantiles. The values of the probability plotting correlation coefficient that may be used to test the distributional hypothesis are calculated and presented. The developed fitting method is applied to extreme thunderstorm and non-thunderstorm winds for several major cities in Canada. Also, the implication of using the GEVD and Gumbel distribution to model the extreme wind speed on the structural reliability is presented and elaborated.
