For laser welding in shipbuilding industry, gap bridging capability is one of the most important characteristics to achieve the high productivity and good weld quality. Recently, laser-GMA hybrid welding process is regarded as a distinctive method to overcome the tight gap tolerance with improving the productivity. In this study, the influence of process parameters on the bead formation was experimentally analyzed and the relationship between the process parameters and geometric imperfections was investigated. It was revealed that undercut, excessive weld metal, excessive penetration and incompletely filled groove were the major geometric imperfections. The optimized wire feeding and arc pressure were necessary to ensure the gap bridging ability. The approach to select the process parameters was conducted for butt welding with up to 2mm joint gap, in which the sound weld beads were generated without changing the welding speed.

A lot of researches on a linear induction motor(LIM) have been advanced to realize a traction system with high efficiency and performance for railway transit for a long time. However, most of them are limited in design of a LIM part such as Primary and Secondary. At a LIM which is traveling, the change of an air-gap(It occurs by a construction tolerance of a secondary reaction plate) becomes the cause which decreases a smoother ride and the efficiency of railway transit system. Therefore, uniform air-gap operation of LIM is important issue to improve the system efficiency. However, the researches which control the air-gap length of the LIM with technical and high-cost problem have been not advanced a lot. Therefore, in this research, it is introduced an air-gap control system for performance test machine of a scale-downed LIM which is able to control the air-gap length of the LIM and monitor a variety of performance changes of the propulsion system, and conducted a research on feasibility of the system based on characteristic analysis.
In most industry, manual GTAW welding is preferred for formation of stable back bead in root weld of butt joint. However, manual GTAW welding has low productivity as compared with GMAW, also it has unstable bead quality which depend on skilled workers. So it is necessary to develop process of root pass welding by using automation GMAW that have stable back bead formation and high productivity. In this paper, the design of U-groove with 3mm root face was applied to extend the tolerance of misalignment in condition of standard root gap 1.5mm. Consequently, for the formation of stable back bead in root pass of butt welding, in case of the narrow root gap(0.5mm) the large arc force was applied by increasing the current and voltage. In case of the large root gap(2.5mm), the small arc force was applied by decreasing the current and voltage. Considering the various root gap, the required deposited metal was controlled by welding speed only.

As many systems depend on electronics in an intelligent vehicle, concern for fault tolerance is growing rapidly. For example, a car with its braking controlled by electronics and no mechanical linkage from brake pedal to calipers of front tires(brake-by-wire system) should be fault tolerant because a failure can come without any warning and its effect is devastating. In general, fault tolerance is usually designed by placing redundant components that duplicate the functions of the original module. In this way a fault can be isolated, and safe operation is guaranteed by replacing the faulty module with its redundant and normal module within a predefined interval. In order to make in-vehicle network fault tolerant, this paper presents the concept and design methodology of an IEEE 1451 based dual CAN module. In addition, feasibility of the dual CAN network was evaluated by implementing the dual CAN module.

An automobile ball joint is the element for connecting the control arm and the knuckle arm, allowing rotational motion. The ball joint consists of the stud, plug, socket, and seat. These components are assembled through the caulking process that consists of plugging and spinning. In the existing research, the pull-out strength and gap stiffness were calculated, but we did not consider the uncertainties due to the numerical analysis and production. In this study, the uncertainties of material property and tolerance are considered to predict the distributions of pull-out strength and gap stiffness. Also, pull-out strength and gap stiffness are predicted as the a distribution rather than one deterministic value. Furthermore, a robust design applying the Taguchi method is suggested.

Esthetic appeal of a product is often affected by the appearance quality of seams forming between components of the product. The appearance quality of seams is, however, assessed in a very subjective and qualitative manner that heavily depends on the evaluator. This paper presents a preliminary study to quantify such assessment by formulating a quantitative index which is a linear function of the seam gap sizes, seam gap ranges, and the size uniformity of seam gaps. By considering a highly simplified problem of a drawer system and utilizing subjective assessments by twenty evaluators, the index has been formulated. The validity of this index has been confirmed by observing its behavior with changes of the component tolerances. Also, the utility of this index has been demonstrated through a selective assembly scheme applied to the drawer system problem. Though the index formulated in this study for seam appearance quality may be useful, future studies are necessary to make the model readily applicable to real problems.
The purposes of the study were to analyze the seasonal effects on the fish fauna and compositions including trophic guilds and tolerance guilds. For the study, we collected fish samples twice in June as premonsoon period and early September 2007 as monsoon periods in five sampling sites of the Gap Stream, and then biological oxygen demand (BOD), nutrients (TN, TP) and suspended solids (SS) were compared with the guild data along the gradient of upstream-to-downstream. Chemical water quality, based on BOD, TP, and TN degraded gradually from the upstream to downstream reach and there were about 3 fold difference between S1 and S5. Water quality was worse in the premonsoon than the monsoon, and the heavy monsoon resulted in a dilution of the polluted river by rain water, especially, in the downstream reach. Total number of fish species, based on the catch per unit effort (CPUE), showed a distinct difference between the two seasons; 30 species were sampled in premonsoon, but 23 species were sampled in the monsoon, indicating a seasonal difference in the fish fauna. Tolerant species dominated the fish community (48.3%) in the stream, and the proportions prior to physical disturbance by the monsoon rain were evidently greater in the downstream reach than the upstream. This reflected the characteristics of urban stream polluted by nutrient enrichment as shown in the BOD and TP values. Sensitive species in the premonsoon decreased from the gradient of upstream-to-downstream reach. Such seasonal modifications in the trophic and tolerance guilds were evident. In the analysis of trophic guild and habitat guild, during the premonsoon the proportion of insectivore and riffle-benthic species were largely greater in the upstream reach than the downstream, whereas the proportions were opposite along the gradient of the stream in monsoon. Thus, the patterns of chemical water quality along the longitudinal gradients reflected the premonsoon conditions of insectivores and tolerant species, indicating that summer monsoon data of fish may not match with water quality due to large physical disturbance by flow regime. Seasonal monsoon in this region as well as the chemical pollution may act as a key role influencing the fish compositions of trophic and tolerance guilds and fauna. The data collected during the premonsoon rather than the monsoon, thus, may be better predictor for a diagnosis of stream health conditions.

The purpose of this paper is to provide the unbalanced magnetic force and vibration mode comparison between two large interior permanent magnet machines(IPM) with different pole-slot combination considering stator and rotor eccentricity. Due to the punching tolerance, the mixed eccentricity of air-gap is inevitable. It will generate the asymmetric magnetic flux density in air-gap, which makes the unbalanced magnetic pull and vibration. The study is focused on the unbalanced magnetic force and their harmonic components according to eccentricity conditions such as static, dynamic and mixed. When the high vibration is produced especially resonance, the obtained results provide clues what eccentricity condition occurs in the machine.
The low frequency pulsed MIG welding process of new current waveform control to switch over unit pulse conditions (pulse current, pulse duration) in the fixed cycle was developed and its effect were investigated for aluminium and its alloy. By using this new welding process, the bead appearance having clear ripple pattern, such as TIG welding bead can be obtained and the gap tolerance of lap and butt welding joint can be expanded.

Air gap control method using a conventional actuator for near field recording technology has been reported. To achieve good performance in the air gap servo and further experiments, the assembling between OL and SIL is the critical procedure. A lens set with NA 1.45 at 405 m has been assembled and tested by using a Twyman-Green interferometer. The tolerance of assembling is very tight and the designing and adjusting procedure must be carefully controlled.
