The purpose of his study was to investigate the perceptions and preferences of college students to Korean traditional cookies. Self administered questionaires were collected from 512 college students in the Seoul, Kyunggi, Chungchung, Kyungsang, Junla and Gangwondo areas. The data were statistically analysed using t-tests, one-way ANOVA and their correlation. The recognition of Korean traditional cookie was generally low with the exception of these items as either a seasonable or festive food. There were significant differences in the mean recognition and preference values for each kind of Korean traditional cookie between the major subject studied, gender and subject grade. (Eds note: how were the mean values different for the 3 specified variables\ulcorner) The preference of some Korean cookies was relatively higher than estimated, (Eds note: how was the original estimate arrived at\ulcorner) such as Yugwa, Gangjeong, Han-gwa, Hobak-yeot, Ddangkong-yeot-gangjeong and Ssal-yeot-gangjeong. However, it is impossible to discriminate low preference, as over 80% of the low preference values had not been completed on the questionnaires.
This study purposed to analyze the spatial pattern and the amount of carbon emission at the deforestation area in Gangwondo. Forest geographic information system(FGIS) and administrative data were used in the analysis. The area size and spatial patterns of deforestation area were analyzed according to the article 3.3 of Kyoto protocol. Forest administration data for 9 years from 2000 to 2008 were entered into a database. Fifty-nine percent of deforestation area was found within 200m of the road network, and seventy-five percent of the area was found within 500m. Theoretical carbon emission based on deforestation area was estimated at 6,968tc. Carbon emission of national forest was 5.7times higher than that of private forest.
During disease surveys conducted from 2019 to 2021 in Korea, leaf spot symptoms in rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum) plants were frequently observed in plants growing in fields located in Cheolwon, Taebaek, and Inje in Gangwon Province. The incidence of diseased leaves of the plants in the fields ranged from 2% to 80%. Nine single-spore isolates of Phoma sp. were obtained from lesions of the diseased leaves; all of them were identified as Didymella rhei based on their cultural, morphological, and molecular characteristics. Three isolates of D. rhei were tested for pathogenicity on rhubarb leaves using artificial inoculation. All the tested isolates caused leaf spot symptoms in the inoculated plants; the symptoms were similar to those observed in plants from the fields investigated. This is the first report of D. rhei causing leaf spot in rhubarb in Korea.
Macruropyxis fraxini has been recorded on several species of Fraxinus in China, Japan, Russia (Far East), and North Korea since its first recorded observation as a rust fungus on F. rhynchophylla in Jilin, China, in 1899. In the Korean Peninsula, the rust fungus was first recorded on F. rhynchophylla in 1935, based on four specimens collected at Mt. Kumgangsan, Gangwondo Province, in the North Korean territory. We confirmed this rust in the Korean Peninsula after 82 years. The rust fungus was identified based on morphological characteristics and a molecular phylogenetic analysis. This is the first record of M. fraxini in South Korea.

In June 2021, foot rot symptoms were observed in wasabi (Eutrema japonicum) plants growing in vinyl greenhouses of the Alpine Agricultural Experiment Station, Wild Vegetable Research Institute, in Taebaek, Gangwon Province, Korea. Diseased plants displayed black soft rot of crowns and petioles at the soil line and wilted. The incidence of diseased plants was 2-10% in four out of five vinyl greenhouses investigated. Eight fungal isolates were obtained from diseased plants. All the isolates were identified as Phytophthora pseudocrytogea based on their morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis. Three isolates of P. pseudocrytogea were used for pathogenicity test on wasabi plants via artificial inoculation. The pathogenicity of the isolates was confirmed in the inoculated wasabi plants. The symptoms shown by the inoculated plants were similar to those observed in plants from the investigated vinyl greenhouses. This is the first report of P. pseudocryptogea causing Phytophthora foot rot in wasabi.

This study was carried out to evaluate the fruit and growth characteristics of selecting Vitis amurensis through functional material analysis and sensory evaluation in V. amurensis collected in Gangwondo. For evaluation of growth characteristics in V. amurensis, experiments were carried out by compared with the two grape cultivars 'Campbell Early' and 'Kyoho'. The full bloom and verasion time in V. amurensis was investigated faster than those of examined cultivar grapes, while harvest time was investigated latter than those of examined cultivar grapes, but agronomic characteristics was not thought significantly difference between cultivar grapes and V. amurensis. For evaluation of shoot growth phase, the growth curve was very similar to cultivar grapes. The berry size in V. amurensis showed that increases rapidly between 3 and 4 days after full bloom time, and approximately doubles between the second growth period and harvest time, and the berry development phase investigated that consist of two sigmoid growth periods separated by a lag phase. The berry weight and soluble solids in V. amurensis increased with the tree age, but acidity and total sugar contents decreased, and showed a special quality and stable growth according to vine age. To investigation of functional materials, the anthocyanin content in V. amurensis ranged from 16.6 to 50.2 mg/100 g, and the resveratrol content ranged from 0.143 to $0.236{\mu}g/100\;g$ which was higher than those of cultivar grapes. These result indicated that V. amurensis tended to have the useful material larger than cultivar grapes. Therefore, other edibility factors of V. amurensis collected in Gangwondo may contribute to breeding studies in Vitis. spp.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of leachate discharged from livestock burial sites in Gangwondo resulting from foot-and-mouth disease by monitoring the water quality at the survey tube-wells installed near livestock burial sites in order to investigate the effect of the leachate on the quality of nearby underground water and suggest a water pollution level in accordance with water quality evaluation criteria. Methods: To minimize the secondary environmental pollution damage caused by leachate at burial sites of livestock killed by foot-and-mouth disease, this study analyzed the leachate directly discharged from burial sites and installed survey tube-wells within 300 meters of livestock burial sites and investigated water quality as a means to ascertain the environmental effect of the leachate from the burial sites. In accordance with environmental management guidelines on livestock burial sites, this research investigated the water quality in the survey tube-wells in fifty five burial sites in Gangwondo. The elements investigated were $NH_3$-N, $Cl^-$, $NO_3$-N, conductivity, and E. coli. Water quality was monitored from 2011 to 2013. Results: The water quality from the drain pipe at the location of leachate from livestock burial sites showed BOD 37,209 mg/L, COD 8,829 mg/L, $NH_3$-N 3,633 mg/L, and $Cl^-$ 580 mg/L. According to the monitoring results of water quality ($Cl^-$, $NH_3$-N, conductivity) at the survey tube-wells, there was suspicion that 13 out of 55 burial sites discharged leachate, five sites discharged highly concentrated leachate (13%): one in Gangneung, one in Wonju, and three in Cheorwon. Conclusion: It was judged that out of thirteen observation wells which showed a possibility of discharged leachate, three survey tube-wells have established the discharge effect of leachate at burial sites up to recently. Therefore, it is judged that it is necessary to continue monitoring them and devise additional measures.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of collected region(Bongpyeong in Gangwon, 690 m, Mt. Halla in Jeju, 1,085 m), pre-treatment (stratification, soaked in distilled water or $GA_3$) and shading (control, 50%, 80%) on seed emergence and seedlings growth of Ligularia fischeri. The result showed that seed emergence (%) of L. fischeri were 6.9~75.5% (Gangwon : 6.9~32.8%, Halla : 22.2~75.5%). Maximum seed emergence (%) of 32.8 (Gangwon) and 75.5 (Halla) were achieved for seeds were stratified, soaked in distilled water, and under non-shading for L. fischeri (Gangwon), whereas seeds were stratified, soaked in $GA_3$ 100 ppm, and under 80% shading for L. fischeri (Halla). In this study, the best seedling vigor index (SVI) of L. fischeri (Gangwon) and L. fischeri (Halla) were obtained when seeds were stratified, soaked in distilled water, and under 50% shading. The survival rate of potted seedlings for L. fischeri (Halla) were 100% of all shading conditions, but there were decreased by 77.8%, 61.1%, 55.6%, as an increasing shading rate (con, 50%, 80%) for L. fischeri (Gangwon). Therefore, good seedlings were obtained when seed (Mt. Halla) of L. fischeri were stratified, soaked in distilled water, and under 50% shading, and then seedlings were transferred in pot.

The objective of this experiment was to search plant species with herbicidal activity in Korea. Two hundred native plants were collected and their methanol extracts were obtained. Herbicidal activity of methanol extracts were determined by seed bioassay using canola (Brassica napus L.) seedlings. Six plants such as Staphylea bumalda, Wistaria floribunda, Allium victorialis, Rumex crispus, Chionanthus retusa, and Ulmus parvifolia were highly herbicidal: their $GR_{50}$ values were < $1,000{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$. In addition, seventeen plants such as Galium spurium, Zelkova serrata, Campsis grandiflora, Eucommia ulmoides, Sorbus commixta, Deutzia glabrata, Cercis chinensis, Alnus hirsuta, Zanthoxylum schinifolium, Quercus acutissima, Robinia pseudoacacia, Gleditsia japonica, Kerria japonica, Ligustrum obtusifolium, Thuja orientalis, Chamaecyparis obtusa, and Pulsatilla koreana showed herbicidal activity: their $GR_{50}$ values were between 1,000 and $2,000{\mu}g\;g^{-1}$. However, 177 plants showed no herbicidal activity. Plants with herbicidal activity found in this study could be used for weed management and herbicidal compounds in such herbicidal plants could be used as lead compounds in the development of new herbicides.

Alpine and sloped-land in Gangwondo, Korea is the most important land type for cultivation of Chinese cabbage. However, farmers in these regions have major problems with insect pests, weeds and disease. Over use or inappropriate use of agrochemicals occurs frequently. No intensive study of pesticide contamination in this area has been done. The work presented in this paper addresses this deficiency. We measured pesticide residues within soil and water samples using multiresidue analysis. Samples were collected bimonthly from April to October, 2002 at three sites with to sampling spots. At the three sites, Pyeongchang, Jeongseon and Taebaeck, pesticides most frequently detected (>30% of samples) in soil samples were endosulfan, fluazinam, diniconazole, alachlor, prothiofos and dimethomorph. The amount of pesticide residues in the soils was ranged from 0.004 to $0.412\;mg\;kg^{-1}$ in these samples. Non-registered pesticides were also detected in these samples, indicating illegal use of pesticides. No pesticide were detected in the water samples collected from those sites. The results showed that pesticide residues might be dependant on physiochemical properties of pesticides, application history and soil properties. This study provides basic data for appropriate pesticide use on alpine and sloped-land in Korea.
