  • Background: Humidifier disinfectant is a biocidal product used in the water tanks of humidifiers to prevent the growth of microorganisms. Although there are a huge number of cases of reported humidifier disinfectant-related health effects across the entire Korean population, their numbers are distributed differently depending on the region. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the regional distribution of enrollment cases who reported humidifier disinfectant-related health effects. Methods: This study used data on 6,240 subjects who experienced humidifier disinfectant-related health effects and who enrolled their cases which is conducted by the Korea Ministry of Environment. We examined the regional distribution of the enrolled cases based on sixteen administrative divisions and assessed the: 1) crude number; 2) proportional rate; and 3) age-standardized proportional rate of enrollment by region. Results: When we examined the crude number of enrollments by region, the highest number were in Gyeonggi-do Province (n=1,896), followed in order by Seoul (n=1,405), Incheon (n=436) Busan, Daegu, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, Daejeon, Chungcheongnam-do Province, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, Jeollabuk-do Province, Gwangju, Chungcheongbuk-do Province, Gangwon-do Province, Jeollanam-do Province, Ulsan, and Jeju-do. When we examined proportional rate of the regional enrollment (cases per 100,000 population), Daejeon (n=16.2) was the region with the highest rate, followed in order by Gyeonggi-do Province (n=16.1), Incheon-do Province (n=15.9), Seoul, Daegu, Gwangju, Jeollabuk-do Province, Chungcheongnam-do Province, Busan, Chungcheongbuk-do Province, Gangwon-do Province, Gyeongsanbuk-do Province, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, Ulsan, Jeju-do, and Jeollanam-do Province, which is inconsistent with the order in terms of crude numbers. However, when we examined the age-standardized proportional rate of regional enrollment (cases per 100,000 population), their ranked distribution is consistent with the crude rate. Conclusions: This study observed that the regional distribution of the enrolled cases who reported humidifier disinfectant-related health effects is inconsistent with the regional distribution of the proportional rate of enrollment cases, which may be caused in part by the volume of the inherent population of each region.

  • Climate change effects are particularly apparent in many cool-season grasslands in South Korea. Moreover, the probability of climate extremes has intensified and is expected to increase further. In this study, we performed climate change vulnerability assessments in cool-season grasslands based on the analytic hierarchy process method to contribute toward effective decision-making to help reduce grassland damage caused by climate change and extreme weather conditions. In the analytic hierarchy process analysis, vulnerability was found to be influenced in the order of climate exposure (0.575), adaptive capacity (0.283), and sensitivity (0.141). The climate exposure rating value was low in Jeju-do Province and high in Daegu (0.36-0.39) and Incheon (0.33-0.5). The adaptive capacity index showed that grassland compatibility (0.616) is more important than other indicators. The adaptation index of Jeollanam-do Province was higher than that of other regions and relatively low in Gangwon-do Province. In terms of sensitivity, grassland area and unused grassland area were found to affect sensitivity the most with index values of 0.487 and 0.513, respectively. The grassland area rating value was low in Jeju-do and Gangwon-do Province, which had large grassland areas. In terms of vulnerability, that of Jeju-do Province was lower and of Gyeongsangbuk-do Province higher than of other regions. These results suggest that integrating the three aspects of vulnerability (climate exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity) may offer comprehensive and spatially explicit adaptation plans to reduce the impacts of climate change on the cool-season grasslands of South Korea.

  • The impact of climate change on rice plants in Gangwon province was examined by comparing the climatic conditions during the recent 10 years (2000~2009) with those of normal (1971~2000) years, and by evaluating the rice plant responses. The daily mean air temperature increased by $0.5^{\circ}C$ while the daily range decreased by $0.1^{\circ}C$ as compared with the normal years. During the main rice growing period in field (from June to September) precipitation increased from 900 to 1,051mm and sunshine hours decreased from 704 to 619 hours. The respiration consumption effect during the rice growing period increased by 0.07 as a result of increased air temperature and reduced sunshine hours. The optimum heading date (determined by the mean air temperature for 40 days after the heading) was delayed in Chuncheon, Hongcheon, Wonju, and Gangneung compared with the normal. The maximum climatic yield potential based on mean temperature and sunshine hours for 40 days after the rice heading decreased by 94 kg/10a mainly due to the decrease in sunshine. The mean air temperature for 40 days after the rice heading from 1999 to 2009 in Chuncheon, Cheorwon, and Gangneung was generally above $22^{\circ}C$ implying that yield and quality of rice can be reduced. Therefore, it is necessary to delay the heading date by planting mid- to late-maturing varieties or by changing the transplanting date in order to produce high quality rice and to maintain rice productivity. In addition, it is also important to develop or select cultivars suitable to changing climate for each region in Gangwon province.

  • A new mixed-effects model was developed that predicts individual-tree total height for Pinus densiflora trees in Gangwon province as a function of individual-tree diameter (cm). The mixed-effects model contains two random-effects parameters. Maximum likelihood estimation was used to fit the model to 560 height-diameter observations of individual trees measured throughout Gwangwon province in 2007 as part of the National Forest Inventory Program in Korea. The new model is an improvement over fixed-effects models because it can be calibrated to a local area, such as an inventory plot or individual stand. The new model also appears to be an improvement over the Forest Resources Evaluation and Prediction Program for the ten calibration trees used in this study. An example is provided that describes how to estimate the random-effects parameters using ten calibration trees.

  • We surveyed diversity, distribution and diversity change of mammalian species in forests of the Nature Environment Research Park (Survey Area I; reservoir and surrounding forests, II; human habitat and surrounding forests and III; mountain forests) in Gangwon Province from 2004 to 2008. During our study, endangered species like Peromys volans, Lutra lutra and Prionailurus bengalensis were present in the surveyed areas. Diversity of mammalian species tends to be a little higher in the Survey Area I and III than the Survey Area II. Annual species diversity was a little higher in 2006, and then there was a little reduction from 2007. However, there was higher reduction in the number of individuals from 2007. Therefore, our results indicate that specific measures are needed for preservation of mammalian habitats to maintain the species diversity and the number of mammalian individuals.

  • This thesis attempts to investigate and analyse the architectural characteristics of catholic churches in Gangwon province built in the 1950s. Catholic churches built at that time in Korea had many similarities basically since they were supported by UN forces after the Korean War and were established by priests connected to the Missionary Society of St. Columban. The results of study are as follows. In location, Except one catholic church, the catholic churches preferred low and gentle hill. In layout axis, catholic churches at Youngseo area preferred the north-south layout axis, whereas those at Youngdong favor the east-west layout axis. In approach, most of catholic churches around the Youngseo and Youngdong areas preferred entering the front entrance with a bell tower, whereas three of them at Youngdong did entering the front entrance with a bell tower around the rear corner. In floor plan, catholic churches at Youngseo preferred symmetry, whereas those at Youngdong preferred asymmetry. And every floor plan of catholic churches is rectangular type with transepts except one semicircular type. In apse shape, catholic churches in the Youngseo area preferred non-extruded types like a straight wall, whereas those in Youngdong have extruded types. Every catholic churches have no crypt under ground except one at Gangreung. Except one at Sokcho, every catholic church in this study has choir space in half story.

  • This study was intended to compare and evaluate the value obtained from the existing formula for calculating the depth of scour and the valey from experimental model through the investigation of hydraulic characteristics and pier data in the area of rivers at Gangwon Province, and the sensitivity analysis, which is a statistical method, of the elements affecting the scour of the pier was carried out. As a result, a deviation between the values of existing formulas and experimental model reached about 1.09%$^{\circ}$63.98%, indicating that existing formula was found not to be appropriate at the rivers in Gangwon Province. A sensitivity analysis was carried out based on value obtained from experimental model and consequently, the elements affecting the scour were size of pier accounting for 64% and water depth accounting for 36%. Finally, a formula for calculating the scour of the pattern piers at the rivers in Gangwon Province was developed using the regression analysis.

  • This study analyzes the satisfaction degree for menu quality of the regional cuisine in Gangwon province. The result of verifying hypotheses is as follows. For the satisfaction with the quality in direct services, it showed no similarity by education levels, locations, and income levels; however, there was a significant difference in satisfaction by gender, locations, and occupation. Males evaluated satisfaction with direct services higher than females, and Chun-Cheon and Sok-Cho residents felt more satisfied than Gang-Reung residents. By occupation, students and self-employed ones showed more satisfaction. For the satisfaction with indirect services, there was a significant difference in 1% of the similarity range by gender, locations, and occupation while no difference was shown in the other variables. Compared with the satisfaction with direct services, satisfaction with indirect services was low, which indicated the necessity of improving indirect services. Indirect services showed the same results of satisfaction by gender, locations, occupation as those of direct services. In particular, it showed high satisfaction among students.

  • This research was conducted to investigate the incidence of viral infection in Samcheok-shi and Jeongseon-gun, main garlic growing areas of Gangwon province in Korea. Four primers sets (GLV, LYSV, GCLV, OYDV) were used for RT-PCR to test of 100 samples collected from each location. Infection rates of GLV, LYSV, GCLV and OYDV of garlic samples from Samcheok-shi and Jeongseon-gun were 95, 95, 92 and 33%, respectively. All garlic samples tested in this research were infected at least one virus. Coinfection of 3 kinds of virus (GLV, LYSV and GCLV) and 4 kinds of virus (GLV, LYSV, GCLV and OYDV) were 60 and 25%, respectively. While infections of GLV, LYSV and GCLV were evenly found in both two regions, OYDV infection of garlic samples collected from Jeongseon-gun was higher than Samcheok-shi. Viral infections at garlic fields of whole country and Gangwon province are very serious now. Therefore, it is very necessary to develop technic for virus-free bulb and renew seed bulb of garlic.
