Measurements of low dose rates of gamma-rays using position-sensitive plastic scintillation optical fiber detector

  • We fabricated a 15 m long position-sensitive plastic scintillation optical fiber (PSOF) detector consisting of a PSOF, two photomultiplier tubes, four fast amplifiers, and a digitizer. A single PSOF was used as a sensing part to estimate the gamma-ray source position, and 137Cs, an uncollimated solid-disk-type radioactive isotope, was used as a gamma-ray emitter. To improve the sensitivity, accuracy, and measurement time of a PSOF detector compared to those of previous studies, the performance of the amplifier was optimized, and the digital signal processing (DSP) was newly designed in this study. Moreover, we could measure very low dose rates of gamma-rays with high sensitivity and accuracy in a very short time using our proposed PSOF detector. The results of this study indicate that it is possible to accurately and quickly locate the position of a very low dose rate gamma-ray source in a wide range of contaminated areas using the proposed position-sensitive PSOF detector.

Feasibility Study of Diffusion Film for the Light Guide of Gamma Ray Imaging System

  • A light guide improves the spatial resolution of a gamma ray imaging system by diffusing the scintillation light. Similarly, light diffusion film, which has been applied to flat-panel-display engineering, spreads the light from the light guide panel. In this study, we adopted light diffusion film for the light guide of a gamma ray imaging system, and evaluated its diffusion characteristics. We compared the light diffusion performance of the film to an ordinary acrylic plate. As a result, the diffusion film widely spreads scintillation light. As for the thickness of the light guide, we acquired more distinct images with three films overlapped than with an acrylic plate. We expect light diffusion film to be a promising candidate for light guides in gamma ray imaging systems.

Mechanical properties and radiation shielding performance in concrete with electric arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregate

  • In this study, physical properties of normal concrete, magnetite concrete, EAF concrete, and EAF concrete with added iron powder were evaluated and a feasibility of radiation shielding is also evaluated through irradiation tests against X-rays and gamma-rays. While the unit weight of EAF concrete (3.21 t/㎥) appeared lower than that of magnetite concrete (3.50 t/㎥), the results in compressive strength of EAF concrete were greater than those in magnetite and normal concrete. While the radiation transmission rate of normal concrete reaches 26.0% in the X-ray irradiation test, only 6.0% and 9.0% of transmission rate were observed in magnetite concrete and linear relationship with unit volume weight and radiation shielding. In the gamma-ray irradiation test, the performance of EAF and magnetite concretes appeared to be similar. Through the results on the excellent physical properties and radiation shielding performance a potential applicability of EAF concrete to radiation shielding was verified.

고선량율 감마선 환경하에서의 카메라 관측성능 (Monitoring Performance of Camera under the High Dose-rate Gamma Ray Environment)

  • In this paper, the gamma ray irradiation test results of the CCD cameras are described. From the low dose-rate (2.11 Gy/h) to the high dose-rate (150 Gy/h) level, which is the same level when the hydrogen explosion was occurred in the 1~3 reactor unit of the Fukushima nuclear power plant, the monitoring performance of the cameras owing to the speckles are evaluated. The numbers of speckles, generated by gamma ray irradiation, in the image of cameras are calculated by image processing technique. And the legibility of the sensor indicator (dosimeter) owing to the numbers of the speckles is presented.

Full spectrum estimation of helicopter background and cosmic gamma-ray contribution for airborne measurements

  • The airborne radiation monitoring has been used in geophysics for more than forty years and now it also has its important role in emergency monitoring. The aircraft background and the cosmic gamma-rays contribute to the measured gamma spectrum on the aircraft board. This adverse effect should be eliminated before the data processing. The paper describes two semiparametric methods to estimate the full spectrum aircraft background and cosmic gamma-ray contribution from spectra measured at altitudes where terrestrial contribution is negligible. The methods only assume to know possible peak positions in spectra and their full width at half maximum, that can be easily obtained e.g. from terrestrial measurement. The methods were applied to real experimental data acquired on Mi-17 and Bell 412 helicopter boards. The IRIS airborne gamma-ray spectrometer, with 4×4 L NaI(Tl) crystals, produced by Pico Envirotec Inc., Canada, was used on helicopters' boards. To obtain valid estimate of the aircraft background and the cosmic contribution, the measurements over sea and large water areas were carried out. However, the satisfactory results over inland were also achieved comparing with those acquired over large water areas.

방사성 의약품 자동합성장치용 단채널 감마선 분광기 보드의 설계 및 제작 (Development of One-channel Gamma ray spectroscope for Automatic Radiopharmaceutical Synthesis System)

  • 본 논문에서는 방사성 의약품의 자동합성장치에 사용되는 단채널 감마선 분광기를 보드 형태로 설계, 제작하고 그 특성을 측정 분석하였다. 감마선 검출을 위해 CZT (CdZnTe) spear 검출기를 이용하였고 아날로그 방식을 적용한 신호처리 보드의 형태로 감마선 분광기를 제작하였다. 측정을 위하여 방사성 물질인 Co-60을 시료로 사용하였으며, 최대 1173keV까지의 감마선 에너지 스펙트럼을 얻을 수 있었다. 아날로그 보드는 CZT spear 검출기에서 감마선을 검출하여 출력하는 신호를 적절히 변화시켜주기 위한 SF (shaping filter) 및 PHA (peak and hold amplifier)와 수치화된 감마선 신호 데이터를 계산하기 위한 ADC(analog to digital converter)와 FPGA (field programmable gate array)로 구성되었다.

육가공용 향신료의 위생화를 위한 감마선 및 전자선 조사 효과 비교 (Comparison of the Effects of Gamma Ray and Electron Beam Irradiation to Improve Safety of Spices for Meat Processing)

  • 육가공 산업에서 원료로 이용되고 있는 향신료의 위생화를 위하여 대표적인 살균 기술인 감마선과 전자선의 조사효과를 비교하였다. 미생물 오염도를 측정한 결과 대부분의 시료에서 1.5 to 3.8 Log CFU/g의 일반호기성 미생물이 나타났으나, 강황 및 로즈마리에서는 미생물이 검출되지 않았다. 검출된 시료에서는 조사에 의해 효과적인 것으로 미생물이 감소하였으며, 감마선이 전자선보다 효과적으로 미생물을 사멸하였다. 검출된 미생물을 동정한 결과 Bacillus spp. 및 Staphylococcus spp.으로 확인하였다. B. cereus 및 S. aureus에 대한 방사선 감수성 측정 결과 0.19-0.63 kGy로 확인되었으며, 전자선 보다 감마선에 대한 내성이 약한 것으로 확인되었다. Ames test를 이용하여 방사선 조사에 의한 향신료의 유전독성학적 안전성을 평가한 결과, 조사에 의한 돌연변이원성은 관찰되지 않았다. 이상의 결과를 종합하여 볼 때, 향신료의 위생화를 위한 살균방법으로 방사선 조사기술이 효과적으로 판단되며, 감마선(>4 kGy, <6 kGy)이 전자선보다 효과적으로 미생물을 제어하는 것으로 나타났다.

Fast non-local means noise reduction algorithm with acceleration function for improvement of image quality in gamma camera system: A phantom study

  • Gamma-ray images generally suffer from a lot of noise because of low photon detection in the gamma camera system. The purpose of this study is to improve the image quality in gamma-ray images using a gamma camera system with a fast nonlocal means (FNLM) noise reduction algorithm with an acceleration function. The designed FNLM algorithm is based on local region considerations, including the Euclidean distance in the gamma-ray image and use of the encoded information. To evaluate the noise characteristics, the normalized noise power spectrum (NNPS), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and coefficient of variation (COV) were used. According to the NNPS result, the lowest values can be obtained using the FNLM noise reduction algorithm. In addition, when the conventional methods and the FNLM noise reduction algorithm were compared, the average CNR and COV using the proposed algorithm were approximately 2.23 and 7.95 times better than those of the noisy image, respectively. In particular, the image-processing time of the FNLM noise reduction algorithm can achieve the fastest time compared with conventional noise reduction methods. The results of the image qualities related to noise characteristics demonstrated the superiority of the proposed FNLM noise reduction algorithm in a gamma camera system.

감마선용 고속 피크홀드회로의 개발 (Development of High Speed Peak-hold Circuit for Gamma-ray)

  • 감마선이 존재하는 시설물에서는 발생 즉시 이를 발견하여 처리해야 하며 이와 관련하여 무작위적으로 발생하는 신호를 처리하는 소프트웨어적인 방법을 사용하기도 하나 소프트웨어의 메모리 용량과 처리시간이 커지게 된다. 한편 하드웨어적인 방법으로 신호처리할 수 있는 회로가 일반화되어 있으나 발생 신호의 크기가 미약하고 속도가 고속인 경우에는 이에 대응하지 못한다. 하드웨어적으로 효과적으로 신호처리하려면 값이 매우 비싼 부품과 복잡한 회로를 필요로 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 크기는 미약하지만 속도가 고속인 감마선 발생신호에 대해서 하드웨어적으로 간단한 피크홀드 회로를 개발하여 피크 시점에서 ADC가 신호값을 직접 읽어냄으로써 감마선 신호의 피크치를 검출하는 회로를 연구, 개발하였다. 이러한 방법으로 하면 복잡한 소프트웨어 신호처리 방법을 사용하지 않고도 고속 발생신호를 효과적으로 포착할 수 있으므로 감마선의 존재가 농후한 방사능 환경에서 이를 사용하기에 적합하다.

적외선 열영상을 이용한 가시광 통신모듈의 고선량 감마선조사에 따른 열화 분석 (Analysis of Visible Light Communication Module Degraded by High Dose-Rate Gamma Irradiation using Thermal Infrared Image)

  • In this paper, the degradation evaluation method of VLC (Visible Light Communication) wireless module after high dose rate gamma-ray irradiation using the thermal infrared camera is proposed. First, the heating characteristics of the active devices embedded in the VLC wireless module during the condition of normal operation is monitored by thermal infrared camera. By the image processing technique, the trends of the intensity of the heat emitted by the active devices are calculated and stored. The feature of the blob area including the area of the active devices in the thermal infrared image is extracted and stored. The feature used in this paper is the mean value of the gray levels in the blob area. The same VLC module has been gamma irradiated at the dose rate of about 4.0 kGy/h during 72 hours up to a total dose of 288 kGy. And then, the heating characteristics of the active devices embedded in the VLC wireless module after high dose gamma ray irradiation is observed by thermal infrared camera. The high dose gamma-ray induced degradation of the active devices embedded in the VLC module was evaluated by comparing the mean value of the blob area to the one of the same blob area of the VLC module before the gamma ray irradiation.
