A wet type scrubber for merchant vessel uses super austenitic stainless steels with pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of 40 or higher for operation in a harsh corrosive environment. However, it is expensive due to a high nickel content. Thus, electrochemical behavior and cavitation erosion characteristics of UNS S32750 as an alternative material were investigated. Microstructure analysis revealed fractions of ferritic and austenitic phases of 48% and 52%, respectively, confirming the existence of ferritic matrix and austenitic island. Potentiodynamic polarization test revealed damage at the interface of the two phases because of galvanic corrosion due to different chemical compositions of ferritic and austenitic phases. After a cavitation test, a compressive residual stress was formed on the material surface due to impact pressure of cavity. Surface hardness was improved by water cavitation peening effect. Hardness value was the highest at 30 ㎛ amplitude. Scanning electron microscopy revealed wave patterns due to plastic deformation caused by impact pressure of the cavity. The depth of surface damage increased with amplitude. Cavitation test revealed larger damage caused by erosion in the ferritic phase due to brittle fracture derived from different strain rate sensitivity index of FCC and BCC structures.
Recently, Stainless steels have been increasingly selected as the fitting or the valve materials of water pipes as the human health issue is getting higher and higher. Therefore, the connectors attached at pipes to deliver water are exposed to more severe environments than the pipes because crevice or galvanic corrosion is apt to occur at the fittings or the valves. Effects of the solid solution annealing, cooling rate after this heat treatment, and passivation on the corrosion properties of the shell mold casted SSC13 (STS304 alloy equivalent) were studied. The heating and quenching treatment more or less reduced hardness but effectively improved corrosion resistance. It was explained by the reduction of delta ferrite contents. Independent of heat treatment, the chemical passivation treatment also lowered corrosion rate but the improvement of corrosion resistance depended on temperature and time for passivation treatment indicating that the optimum conditions for passivation treatment were the bath temperature of $34^{\circ}C$ and operating time of 10 minutes. Therefore it is suggested that the corrosion resistance of SSC13 can be effectively improved with the heat treatment, where SSC13 is heated for 10 minutes at $1120^{\circ}C$ and quenched and passivation treatment, where SSC13 is passivated for at least 10 seconds at $34^{\circ}C$ nitric acid solution.
An Remote Corrosion Monitoring (RCM) system consists of an anode with low potential, the metallic structures against corrosion, an electrode to provide reference potential, and a data-acquisition system to ensure the potential difference for anticorrosion. In more detail, the data-acquisition (DAQ) system monitors the potential difference between the metallic structures and a reference electrode to identify the correct potential level against the corrosion of the infrastructures. Then, the measured data are transmitted to a central office to remotely keep track of the status of the corrosion monitoring (CM) system. To date, the RCM system is designed to achieve low power consumption, so that it can be simply powered by batteries. However, due to memory effect and the limited number of recharge cycles, it can entail the maintenance fee or sometimes cause failure to protect the metallic structures. To address this issue, the low-overhead energy harvesting circuitry for the RCM systems has designed to replenish energy storage elements (ESEs) along with redeeming the leakage of supercapacitors. Our developed energy harvester can scavenge the ambient energy from the corrosion monitoring environments and store it as useful electrical energy for powering local data-acquisition systems. In particular, this paper considers the energy harvesting from potential difference due to galvanic corrosion between a metallic infrastructure and a permanent copper/copper sulfate reference electrode. In addition, supercapacitors are adopted as an ESE to compensate for or overcome the limitations of batteries. Experimental results show that our proposed harvesting schemes significantly reduce the overhead of the charging circuitry, which enable fully charging up to a 350-F supercapacitor under the low corrosion power of 3 mW (i.e., 1 V/3 mA).

A synergistic effect was observed in the combination of nitrite and ethanolamines. Ethanolamine is one of the representative organic corrosion inhibitors and can be categorized as adsorption type. However, nitrosamines can form when amines mix with sodium nitrite. Since nitrosamine is a carcinogen, the co-addition of nitrite and ethanolamine will be not practical, and thus, a non-toxic combination of inhibitors shall be needed. In order to maximize the effect of monoethanolamine, we focused on the addition of molybdate. Molybdate has been used to alternate the addition of chromate, but it showed insufficient oxidizing power relative to corrosion inhibitors. This work evaluated the synergistic effect of the co-addition of molybdate and monoethanolamine, and its corrosion mechanism was elucidated. A high concentration of molybdate or monoethanolamine was needed to inhibit the corrosion of ductile cast iron in tap water, but in the case of the co-addition of molybdate and monoethanolamine, a synergistic effect was observed. This synergistic effect could be attributed to the molybdate that partly oxidizes the metallic surface and the monoethanolamine that is simultaneously adsorbed on the graphite surface. This adsorbed layer then acts as the barrier layer that mitigates galvanic corrosion between the graphite and the matrix.

Leakage trouble on the sea water pipeline in engine room is often resulted from a localized corrosion due to severe corrosive environment caused by both high speed and high pressure of sea water flowing through the inner pipe. In addition, when the ship is in stand-by or emergency condition, underwater welding to control the leakage of sea water from a hole of its pipe is very important in an industrial safety point of view. In this study possibility of underwater welding to control leakage of sea water and corrosion property of its welding zone were investigated with the electrochemical methods by parameters of welding methods and welding electrodes when underwater welding is achieved with a such case that sea water is being leaked out with a height at 50mm from a hole of $2.5mm{\emptyset}$ of test pipe. Corrosion resistance of weld metal zone is better than the base metal and its hardness is higher than that of the base metal. However corrosion potential of weld metal zone showed a negative value than that of the base metal, therefore weld metal zone is preferentially corroded rather than the base metal by performance of galvanic cell due to difference of corrosion potential between weld metal zone and base metal. Eventually it is suggested that leakage of sea water is successfully controlled by underwater welding,

The use of biogas is an industrially necessary means to achieve resource circulation. However, since biogas obtained from waste frequently causes corrosion in pipes, it is important to elucidate corrosion mechanisms of the pipes used for biogas transportation. Recently, corrosion failure occurred in a pipe which supplied for the biogas at the speed of 12.5 m/s. Pinholes and pits were found in a straight line along the seamline of the pipe. By using corrosion-damaged samples, residual thickness, microstructure, and composition of oxide film and inclusion were examined to analyze the cause of the failure. It was revealed that the thickness reduction of biogas pipe was ~0.11 mm per year. A thin sulfuric acid film was formed on the surface of the interior of a pipe due to moisture and hydrogen sulfide contained in a biogas. Near the seamline, microstructure was heterogeneous and manganese sulfide (MnS) was found. Pits were generated by micro-galvanic corrosion between the manganese sulfide and the matrix in the interior of the pipe along the seamline. In addition, microcracks formed along the grain boundaries beneath the pits revealed that hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) also contributed to accelerating the pitting corrosion.
Austenitic stainless steel 316L has been used a lot of applications because of its high corrosion resistance and formability. In addition, copper brazing is employed to create complex shape of 316L stainless steel for various engineering parts. In such system, copper-based filler metals make galvanic cell at metal/filler metal interface, and it accelerates corrosion of stainless steel. Furthermore, Cu-rich region formed by diffused copper in austenitic stainless steel can promote a pitting corrosion. In this study, we used an ammonia (NH3) gas to nitride the 316L stainless steel for improving the corrosion resistance. The thickness of the nitride (nitrogen high) layer increased with the treatment temperature, and the surface hardness also increased. The potentiodynamic polarization test showed the improvement of corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel by enhancing the passivation on nitride layer. However, in case of high temperature nitriding, a chromium nitride was formed and its fraction increased, so that the corrosion resistance was decreased compared to the intact 316L stainless steel.

As there expands the usage of Al-Cu connections to interface aluminum and copper in power distribution systems, efforts to mitigate the mechanical, electrical or electro-chemical degradation are widely spreading. The explosive bending technology, in particular, has been thought as a countermeasure for the degradation. In this paper, electrochemical analysis and optical microscopic observation are carried out in order to compare the corrosion resistivities of the commercial compression type bimetallic sleeve and the explosion type bimetallic sleeve. The results show that the explosive bonding technology can prevent the interfacial corrosion caused by the formation of crevices and pits as well as from galvanic potential difference.
In this study, autogenous crack healing and artificial crack healing using electrochemical electro deposition method were conducted to compare in the aspects of corrosion monitoring. Furthermore, the analysis of impressed voltage characteristics, galvanic current and linear polarization resistance comparison, and photo image processing technique were performed for quantitative comparisons of healing ratio. As a result, it was found that, in view of impressed voltage of artificial crack healing, the measured voltage was increased as time goes by. From the galvanic test results of artificial crack healing, the current vs. potential distribution value were formed widely in comparison with autogenous crack healing. In this point, it was shown that artificial crack healing has more eleatic resistance capacity than autogenous crack healing technique. Finally, it was found that artificial crack healing was 1.63 times higher than autogenous healing in view of crack healing ratio.
