  • In the basic GMSK, the modulated signals are generated by the preprocessing of NRZ pulse trains with the gaussian low pass filter. In this paper, we proposed the GMSK modulation system with the delta pulse trains. The proposed system constructed with the gaussian pulse generator triggered by the bipolar delta pulse, the differentiator between $+T_b/2$ and $-T_b/2$, and then a matched filter for frequency-modulation function. The spectrum of proposed system was found to be smaller than about 35[%] at 40[dB] attenuated bandwidth, and the center spectrum to be lower than the basic GMSK with zero-crossing property.

  • The symbol rate which is the main feature of NRZ information signal is detected by DAM (Delay-And-Multiplier) receiver. It is important for secure communication to reduce the normalized output SNR which is calculated at the DAM output as a measure of detectability. In this paper, we use the signal which is modulated by the class of MSK modulation schemes as the input signal of the DAM receiver for analyzing LPI performance and the GMSK(BT=0.3) used in GSM system is highlighted. Consequently, GMSK which has better bandwidth efficiency than other modulation schemes(BPSK, QPSK, OQPSK, and MSK) has better LPI performance compared with other ones. To compare the performances of each modulation scheme fairly, the transmitted powers of each system are set to be same within useful bandwidth.

  • The transmitter of quadrature multiplexed GMSK (QM-GMSK) is composed of two quadrature multiplexed GMSK modulators. QM-GMSK has a slightly increased spectrum main lobe compared with $Q^2PSK$ or QMSK, but it has highly suppressed side lobes. As a result, practical spectrum efficiency of QM-GMSK is achieved. By replacing the baseband elementary pulses of QM-GMSK with their approximate, the squared sinusoid of half-period, offset-$Q^2PSK$($OQ^2PSK$) is obtained. The $OQ^2PSK$ signal has similar spectral properties to QM-GMSK. The transmitter of $OQ^2PSK$ can be simply implemented without the Gaussian lowpass filter, which is required in QM-GMSK transmitter. In this paper, we propose an overlapped pulse shaping in $OQ^2PSK$ with RC(raised-cosine) or SRC(squared raised-cosine) pulses of length longer than the symbol period. Power spectrum of the proposed modulation scheme exhibits further suppressed side lobes, hence enhanced spectrum efficiency is obtained. Simulation results indicate that BER performance of the proposed scheme is comparable to that of $OQ^2PSK$.

  • In underwater wireless communication, needs for long distance communication using the high frequency are surpassing ones of short range communication by ultrasonic wave, and demands for transmitting and receiving various data such as voice or high resolution image data are increasing as well. In this work, we studied the effects on the real underwater communication depending on the difference of digital modulation methods. Simulation shows that only the performance of GMSK among many other PSK based modulation schemes(BPSK, QPSK, MSK, GMSK) is significant. Test condition simulates the oceanographic conditions along the 207-survey line, 15Km south of Busan and SNR is maintained 35dB or below. Simulated tests are composed of both transmitting image data($3{\times}10^5$ pixel, 4 bit per pixel) and voice communication($10^{-2}$BER, channel capacity of 1Kbps). Test results show that there are gain of about 7 seconds in transmission time in image transmission case, where channel capacity for BPSK, QPSK, and MSK and for GMSK were 65 Kbps and 45 Kbps, respectively and gain of about 8Km in distances in voice communication case.

  • The Gaussian Minimum Shift Keying (GMSK) modulation technique belongs to the class of nonlinear modulation technique, and it is known to be bandwidth efficient. The GMSK modulation is chosen for the digital cellular phone standard by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). In this paper, an efficient method for implementing all digital GMSK modulator is introduced. The proposed modulator is shown to be simple to implement as well as satisfying the required spectral shape recommended by the ETSI.

  • $GQ^2PSK$ which is a novel digital mobile communication modulation scheme has been introduced and described. $GQ^2PSK$ is a modulation scheme that bandlimits NRZ digital data with Gaussian filter and modulates it by $Q^2PSK$ scheme which uses two shaping pulses and two carriers which are pairwise quadrature. Thus transmission bit rate can be enhanced and available signal space dimensions are more efficiently utilized, with comparison to the already-existing GMSK, QPSK and OQPSK modulation methods. Via the computer simulation, bit error rate of $GQ^2PSK$ scheme which is bandlimited by gaussian filter to be suitable for digital mobil communication, is lower than that of $Q^2PSK$ by 1.4[dB] in case that the signal-to-noise ration is 0[dB], but we have confirmed that $GQ^2PSK$ modulation scheme is approximately equivalent to the GMSK in the respect of power efficiency, and transmission efficiency of $GQ^2PSK$ is improved to 1.5 times than that of GMSK.

  • In this paper, we investigated bit error probabilities of GMSK, which is known to be one of promising modulation techniques for a digital mobile radio, under various mobile radio environments.: AWGN, slow Rayleigh fading channel, co-channel interference and adjacent channel interference. We employed an MSK-type receiver for a coherent detection and assumed degrading to both signals than adjacent channel interference. Especially, it is found that GMSK suffers more degradations than MSK from the co-channel interference. But with a high power adjacent channel interference, GMSK shows less bit error rate than MSK. The results confirm a higher spectrum efficiency of GMSK.

  • The delta driven GMSK is a modulation scheme to generate the gaussian pulse by the bipolar delta signal and to modulate the phase function with the differential gaussian pulse between $+T_b/2$ and $-T_b/2$. The demodulation of delta driven GMSK differs from conventional GMSK schemes. This paper proposed a demodulation with the differential phase detector at the end of each bit interval. A designed detector then finds the one of the possible region by hard decision, in which the phase difference lies. Finally the binary data can be recovered by state transition process. Through the BER simulation for AWGN channel, it was found that the proposed demodulation effected by the run length of binary data. The simulated BER degradation of about 2[dB] was analyzed, as compared to the theoretical coherent demodulation with $BT_b$=0.3.

  • The FHSS(Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum), in which a transmitter changes its carrier frequency according to a certain hopping pattern, is widely used in the military communication system, since it is highly resistant to deliberate Jamming. However, the difference of BER performance of satellite communication system which using the different modulation scheme and Jamming model was not studied. Thus, in this paper, we consider PBNJ(Partial-Band Noise Jamming) and WPBJ(Worst case Partial-Band noise Jamming) as Jamming models, and evaluate BER(Bit Error Rate) performances of NC-MFSK(Non-Coherent M-ary Frequency-Shift Keying), SDPSK(Symmetric Differential Phase-Shift Keying), and GMSK(Gaussian filtered Minimum-Shift Keying) modulation schemes. Based on the results, we suggest the best transmission method for each condition.
