R.C. bridges may require strengthening during the service life. The main cause of durability problem of R.C. bridges is the corrosion of reinforcing steel. For this reason, researches to solve the problem have been conducted but the achievements are just for improving, not the solution. Fiber Reinforced Polymers are recognized as the alternative materials for solving the problem due to the excellent corrosion-resistant property, light-weight and higher strength than steel. This paper presents experimental results and theoretical consideration of bond test for new type GFRP rebar

This paper presents experimental studies on investigating the seismic retrofit performance of reinforced concrete circular columns with poor lap-splice details using GFRP wrapping. Four 1/2 scale-down model columns have been tested. The as-built column is expected to suffer brittle failure due to the bond failure of lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcement. The retrofitted columns using GFRP wrapping showed significant improvement of seismic performance.

This paper presents experimental studies on investigating the seismic retrofit performance of reinforced concrete circular columns with poor lap-splice details using GFRP wrapping. Five full-scale model columns have been tested. The prototype structure is an existing circular reinforced concrete bridge piers designed following the pre-seismic codes and constructed in South Korea in 1979. The as-built column will be expected to suffer brittle failure due to the bond failure of lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcement. The retrofitted columns using GFRP wrapping showed significant improvement of seismic performance. However, the predicted flexural failure mode was not achieved and the longitudinal bars were not yielded. Failure modes of the retrofitted columns are considered to be the gradually delayed bond slip in lap-spliced longitudinal reinforcement. Suggested retrofit design methods using GFRP were validated experimentally.

The tensile and bond performance of GFRP rebar are different from those of conventional steel reinforcement. It requires some studies on concrete members reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars to apply it to concrete structures. GFRP has some advantages such as high specific strength, low weight, non-corrosive nature, and disadvantage of larger deflection due to the lower modulus of elasticity than that of steel. Bridge deck is a preferred structure to apply FRP rebars due to the increase of flexural capacity by arching action. This paper focuses on the behavior of concrete bridge deck reinforced with newly developed GFRP rebars. A total of three real size bridge deck specimens were made and tested. Main variables are the type of reinforcing bar and reinforcement ratio. Static test was performed with the load of DB-24 level until failure. Test results were compared and analyzed with ultimate load, deflection behavior, crack pattern and width.

In this study focuses on bond properties of hybrid FRP rebar after chemical environmental exposure. Hybrid FRP rebar bond specimens were subjected to four type of exposure conditions. Bond properties were investigated by direct bond test. Bond test results, hybrid FRP rebars were found to have better bond strength with concrete than currently using GFRP rebar. Also, hybrid FRP rebar had more than about $80\%$ in bond strength of steel rebar.

This study is to examine bond strength of beam reinforced with GFRP rebar under 4-point bending test by adopting BRITISH STANDARD. The variables were made to have bonding length of 5times$(5d_b)$, 10times$(10d_b)$ and 15times$(15d_b)$ of the nominal diameter of GFRP rebar and were done to analyze the relationship between the bonding strength and the slip. In the result of the test, pull-out failure was dominant in the $5d_b$ and $10d_b$ specimen, both patterns of the pull-out failure and concrete splitting failure appeared in the $10d_b$. On the other hand, the $15d_b$ specimen showed only concrete splitting failure at the end of bonding length. Therefore, it was prove that available bonding length of the GFRP rebar under bending condition on static test is over $15d_b$ then farther research such as fatigue bending test, development of bonding model, FEM parameter study should be performed.

This study is to examine bond strength of beam reinforced with GFRP rebar under 4-point fatigue bending test by adopting BRITISH STANDARD. The variables were made to have bonding length of 5times(5db), and 15times(15db) of the nominal diameter of GFRP rebar and were done to analyze the relationship between the bonding strength and the slip. In the result of the test, pull-out failure was dominant in the 5db specimen, patterns of the pull-out failure and concrete shear failure appeared in the 15db specimen showed only concrete shear failure at the end of bonding length. Therefore, The strain development consist of three different stage : A rapid increases form 0 to about 10% of total fatigue life. A uniform increases form 10% to about 70%~90%. Then a rapid increases until failure, if failure takes place. It seems that stress level has not influence on the secant modules of elasticity. And also according to the outcome the existing strengthening method came out to be the most superiority in S-N graphs.

This paper describes an experimental program to investigate the shear behavior of insulated concrete sandwich panels (CSPs) with different types of GFRP shear connector. The study included testing of 13 insulated CSP specimens with two types of surface conditions for extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation and various shapes of shear connectors. All specimens were loaded in direct shear by means of push-out and were consist of three concrete panels, two insulation layer and four rows of GFRP shear connectors. Load-relative slip between concrete panel and insulation response of CSP specimens has been established through push-out shear test. Test results indicate that the surface condition of insulation has a significant effect on the bond strength between concrete panel and insulation. The specimen used XPS foam with 10mm deep slot shows higher bond strength than those used XPS foam with meshed surface. Corrugated GFRP shear connectors show equivalent strength to grid GFRP shear connectors. Cross-sectional area and embedded length of shear connector have a notable effect on overall response and inplane shear strength of the CSP specimens.
The objective of this study was to propose a development length equation for GFRP bars. A total of 104 modified pullout tests were completed while the test variables were embedment length (15, 30, $45d_b$), net cover thickness ($0.5{\sim}2.0d_b$), top-cast bar effect, different GFRP bar types (K2KR, K3KR and AsUS), and bar diameters (10, 13, 16 mm). Average bond stresses were determined based on modified pullout test results. Two variable linear regression analysis was performed of the average bond stresses. Utilizing 5% fractile concept, a conservative development length design equation was derived. The design equation derived in this study was compared to the ACI 440 committee equation. The cross-comparison revealed that the current equation resulted in shorter development lengths than those determined by the ACI 440 equation when the net cover thickness was large (greater than $1.0d_b$). On the other hand, when the net cover thickness was small (equal to or less than $1.0d_b$), the development lengths required by the current equation were larger than those by the ACI equation. The bond stresses were significantly influenced by the cover thicknesses. The current equation results in development lengths that are more economical when the cover thickness is large, and more conservative lengths when the cover thickness is small than the ACI 440 committee equation.
Three types of salt resistant concrete beams reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer-ribbed bars (GFRP-ribbed bars) were selected, and their applicable properties were investigated with the goal of improving the problem of capacity deterioration in marine structures due to sea water corrosion. In this study, the structural behaviors were similar to RC beams in relation to the development of the strength and stiffness up to the generation of the initial crack. After the growth of this initial crack, the structural properties decreased owing to a sudden loss of bond strength. Also these beams showed the trends of brittle failure. As a result, it was confirmed that a GFS beam replaced with Fly Ash (20%) and Silica Fume (5%) has the best application as a marine structural element.
