This paper reports the influence of number of layers and length of GFRP sheets wrapped onto RCC beams for strengthening. Twelve beams of size $700mm{\times}150mm{\times}150mm$ were cast and tested. Two beams without GFRP and ten beams wrapped in different lay-up patterns with one and two layers of GFRP sheets was subjected to three point loading test and ultrasonic pulse velocity test. Initial crack load, ultimate failure load and types of failure have been observed and noted. Experimental results indicate a significant increase in initial and ultimate load carrying capacity of GFRP wrapped beams compared to unwrapped beams. The failed control specimen was retrofitted using U wrap scheme and tested under three point loading.
This paper deals with a comparative study among three different rehabilitation techniques, namely, (i) carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP), (ii) glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) and (iii) ferrocement on the flexural strengthening of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) beams. As these different techniques have to be compared on a level playing field, tensile coupon tests have been carried out initially for GFRP, CFRP and ferrocement and the number of layers required in each of these composites in terms of the tensile strength. It was found that for the selected constituents of the composites, one layer of CFRP was equivalent to three layers of GFRP and five layers of wiremesh reinforcement in ferrocement. Rehabilitation of RCC beams using these equivalent laminates shows that all the three composites performed in a similar way and are comparable. The parameters selected in this study were (i) the strengthening material and (ii) the level of pre-distress induced to the beams prior to the rehabilitation. It was noticed that, as the levels of pre-distress decreases, the percentage attainment of flexural capacity and flexural stiffness of the rehabilitated beams increases for all the three selected composites used for rehabilitation. Load-deflection behavior, failure modes, energy absorption capacity, displacement ductility and curvature ductility were compared among these composites and at different distress levels for each composite. The results indicate that ferrocement showed a better performance in terms of ductility than other FRPs, and between the FRPs, GFRP exhibited a better ductility than the CFRP counterpart.
Approximately 90,000 ships are registered in South Korea, and about 80,000 of these ships are used in domestic shipping. Among these, 84% are small ships, such as a fishing vessels that weigh less than 20 tons and are made mostly of an FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastics). When this fact is taken into account, the greenhouse gas emissions that are released per ton of a composite vessel are sizeable. In this study, the laminated structures of an FRP fishing vessel, many of which currently are being built in Korea, were analyzed by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and international design rules, and the structures of the hulls are lightweight with optimum glass fiber mass content as determined by the laminate weight minimization algorithm. As a result, it was confirmed that the laminations of the vessels in accordance with the Korean rule could have 6.4% to approximately 11% more design margin compared to the requirements of ISO and other international rules. And the case study of the application of the laminate weight minimization algorithm showed the possibility of reducing the weight of the hull bottom plating by as much as about 19.32% and by as much as about 18.06% in the overall structure.
This paper presents a new cost-effective hybrid GFRP-Concrete deck system that the GFRP panel serves as both tensile reinforcement and stay-in-place form. In order to understand the fatigue behavior of such hybrid deck, fatigue test on a full-scale specimen under sagging moment was conducted, and a series of static tests were also carried out after certain repeated loading cycles. The fatigue test results indicated that such hybrid deck has a good fatigue performance even after 3.1 million repeated loading cycles. A three-dimensional finite element model of the hybrid deck was established based on experimental work. The results from finite element analyses are in good agreement with those from the tests. In addition, flexural fatigue analysis considering the reduction in flexural stiffness and modulus under cyclic loading was carried out. The predicted flexural strength agreed well with the analytical strength from finite element simulation, and the calculated fatigue failure cycle was consistent with the result based on related S-N curve and finite element analyses. However, the flexural fatigue analytical results tended to be conservative compared to the tested results in safety side. The presented overall investigation may provide reference for the design and construction of such hybrid deck system.

GRP pipe (Glass-fiber Reinforced Plastic Pipe) lines making use of FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) are generally thinner, lighter, and stronger than the existing concrete or steel pipe lines, and it is excellent in stiffness/strength per unit weight. In this study, we present the result of field test for buried GRP pipes with large diameter(2,400mm). The vertical and horizontal ring deflections are measured for 387 days. The short-term deflection measured by the field test is compared with the result predicted by the Iowa formula. In addition, the long-term ring deflection is predicted by using the procedure suggested in ASTM D 5365(ANNEX) in the range of 40 to 60 years of service life of the pipe based on the experimental results. From the study, it was found that the long-term vertical and horizontal ring deflection up to 60 years is less than the 5% ring deflection limitation.
The mechanical properties of composites are significantly affected by external environment. It is essential to understand the degradation of material performance and judge the material's lifetime in advance. In the current research, changes in mechanical properties of glass fiber and unsaturated polyester composite materials (GFRP, Glass fiber reinforced plastic) were investigated under different bending stress and submerged in hot water at a temperature of $80^{\circ}C$. Loading time of 100 H (hours), 200 H, 400 H, 600 H, 800 H for testing under stresses equal to 0% (stress-free state), 30%, 50% and 70% of the ultimate strength was applied on the GFRP specimens. From the values of bending stress, obtained from three-point bending test, fracture energy, failure time, and life curve were analysed. Moreover, a normalized strength degradation model for this condition was also developed. It was observed that within 100 H, the decline rate of the bending strength was proportional to the pressure.

A recent application of advanced composite materials, primarily fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) composites, in structures is the reinforcement of conventional structural materials, such as concrete and glued-laminated timber (glulam), to increase their performance. In particular, the construction of large-scale glulam structures usually requires members with large depths and to significantly increase the stiffness and strength of glulam, the members can be reinforced with FRP at top and bottom surfaces. In this paper, glulam beams reinforced with GFRP strip are tested under 2-point bending and results are compared with numerical solution using layer-wise beam theory.

The vibration behavior of glass-fabric reinforced plastic(GFRP) composite beams subjected to various transverse impacts has been investigated as a function of fiber orientation and void fraction. Theoretical results of resonant frequency damping coefficient and modal amplitude dispersion using the Euler-beam theory were obtained along with the finite element analysis which were compared with experimental ones Consequently it was shown that the transverse vibration characteristics were largely affected by fiber orientation and void fraction.

This paper deals with the torsional buckling behavior of plain weave GFRP composite cylindrical shells having comparatively small length-to-diameter ratio. Boundary conditions corresponding to clamped ends and simply supported ends are considered. Torsional buckling loads and circumferential mode numbers according to the variation of shell length-to-radius ratio are conformed. To verify the availability of the theoretical results, comparison with the theoretical and experimental results are made.

Combat vehicles are frequently maneuvered in battlefields when the lives of combatants are being threatened. These vehicles are important elements that influence the consequences of a battle. Their armor must be lightweight and provide excellent protection to ensure successful operations. Ceramic composite armor has recently been developed by many countries to fulfill these requirements. We reviewed previous research to determine an effective armor design, and then fabricated a composite armor structure using $Al_2O_3$ and glass fiber-reinforced polymer. Specimens were manufactured under controlled conditions using different backing plate thicknesses and bonding methods for the ceramic layer and the backing plate. The penetration of an armor-piercing bullet was evaluated from ballistic protection tests. The bonding method between the ceramic layer and the fiber-reinforced polymer influenced the ballistic protection performance. A bonding layer using rubber provided the best protection.
