Purpose: Postoperative pancreatic fistula is a dreadful complication after gastric cancer surgery. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the actual incidence and risk factors of postoperative pancreatic fistula after curative gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 900 patients who underwent gastrectomy for gastric cancer (laparoscopic gastrectomy, 594 patients; open gastrectomy 306 patients) were enrolled between January 2009 and December 2010. Clinical outcomes, including postoperative pancreatic fistula grade based on the International Study Group on Pancreatic Fistula, were investigated. Results: Overall, the postoperative pancreatic fistula rate was 3.3% (30/900) (1.5% in laparoscopic gastrectomy versus 6.9% in open gastrectomy, P<0.001). Patients who underwent D2 lymphadenectomy, total gastrectomy, splenectomy or distal pancreatectomy showed higher postoperative pancreatic fistula rates (4.7%, 13.8%, 13.6%, or 57.1%, respectively, P<0.001). Patients with postoperative pancreatic fistula had higher morbidity (46.7% versus 13.1%, P<0.001), delayed gas out (4.9 days versus 3.8 days, P<0.001), belated diet start (5.8 days versus 3.5 days, P<0.001) and longer postoperative hospital stay (13.7 days versus 6.8 days, P<0.001). On the multivariate analysis, total gastrectomy (odds ratio 9.751, 95% confidence interval: 3.348 to 28.397, P<0.001), distal pancreatectomy (odds ratio 7.637, 95% confidence interval: 1.668 to 34.961, P=0.009) and open gastrectomy (odds ratio 2.934, 95% confidence interval: 1.100 to 7.826, P=0.032) were the independent risk factors of postoperative pancreatic fistula. Conclusions: Laparoscopic gastrectomy had an advantage over open gastrectomy in terms of the lower postoperative pancreatic fistula rate. Total gastrectomy and combined resection, such as distal pancreatectomy, should be performed carefully to minimize postoperative pancreatic fistula in gastric cancer surgery.
In this study, a new thin films passivation technique using Zn with high electronegativity and $MgF_2$, a fluorine material with better optical transmittance than the sealing film materials that have thus far been reported was proposed. Targets with various ratios of $MgF_2$ to Zn (5:5, 4:6 and 3:7) were fabricated to control the amount of Zn in the passivation films. The Mg-Zn-F films were deposited onto the substrates and Zn was located in the gap between the lattices of $MgF_2$ without chemical metathesis in the Mg-Zn-F films. The thickness and optical transmittance of the deposited passivation films were approximately 200 nm and 80%, respectively. It was confirmed via electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis that the Zn content of the film that was sputtered using a 4:6 ratio target was 9.84 wt%. The Zn contents of the films made from the 5:5 and 3:7 ratio targets were 2.07 and 5.01 wt%, respectively. The water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) was determined to be $38^{\circ}C$, RH 90-100%. The WVTR of the Mg-Zn-F film that was deposited with a 4:6 ratio target nearly reached the limit of the equipment, $1\times10^{-3}\;gm^2{\cdot}day$. As the Zn portion increased, the packing density also increased, and it was found that the passivation films effectively prevented the permeation by either oxygen or water vapor. To measure the characteristics of gas barrier, the film was applied to the emitting device to evaluate their lifetime. The lifetime of the applied device with passivation was increased to 25 times that of the PLED device, which was non-passivated.
Silicon dioxide thick film using silica optical waveguide cladding was fabricated by Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition(PECVD) method, at a low temperature ($320^{\circ}$C) and from $(SiH_4+N_2O)$ gas mixtures. The effects of deposition parameters on properties of $SiO_2$ thick films were investigated by variation of $N_2O/SiH_4$ flow ratio and RF power. After the deposition process, the samples were annealed in a furnace at $1150^{\circ}$C, in N2 atmosphere, for 2h. As the $N_2O/SiH_4$ flow ratio increased, deposition rate decreased from 9.4 to 2.9 ${\mu}m/h$. As the RF power increased, deposition rate increased from 4.7 to 6.9 ${\mu}m/h$. The thickness and the refractive index measurements were measured by prism coupler. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy(XPS) and Fourier Transform-infrared Spectroscopy(FT-IR) were used to determine the chemical states. The cross-section of films was observed by Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM).

Nanosized NiO powder was prepared by mixing an acid nickel salt and a base nickel salt and their reduction behavior was studied. Ni formate was employed as an acid salt and nickel hydroxide and basic nickel carbonate as base salts. One equivalent acid salt was mixed with 9 equivalent base salt. The mixture of the formate and the carbonate produced ~100 run spherical NiO powder by heat treatment at $750^{\circ}C$/2 h, but the mixture of the formate and the hydroxide gave rise to ~100 nm pseudo spherical NiO powder by heat treatment at $600^{\circ}C$/2 h and grew fast to give pseudo cubic crystals of 100~600 run by heat treatment at $750^{\circ}C$/2 h. Reduction by hydrogen gas proceeded much faster for the one with the hydroxide than that with the carbonate to give porous body with well grown necks. Their behavior was studied by analysis of TG/DSC, XRD, and SEM.

The effect of the size and shape of magnesium(Mg) powder on the formation of $MgB_2$ and the critical current density($J_{c,}$) of $MgB_2$ bulk was studied. As a precursor for the formation of $MgB_2$, Mg and $MgB_4$ powder, which was synthesized through the reaction of boron (B) with Mg powders, was used. $MgB_4$ was mixed with Mg powders of various sizes, pressed into pellets and heat-treated at $650^{\circ}C-750^{\circ}C$ in flowing argon gas. The XRD analysis of the heat-treated $MgB_2$ samples showed that the volume fraction of $MgB_2$ was the highest as 92.74 % when spherical Mg powder with an average size of $25.7{\mu}m$ was used, whereas the volume fraction was the lowest as 79.64 % when plate-like Mg powder with a size of $34.1{\mu}m$ was used. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of $MgB_2$ was not sensitive to the characteristics of the Mg powders used. All of the prepared $MgB_2$ samples showed a high $T_c$ of 38.3 K and a small superconducting transition width of 0.2 K-0.5 K. $J_c$ (5 K and 1 T) of $MgB_2$ was the highest as $3.93{\times}10^4A/cm^2$ when spherical Mg powder with a size of $25.7{\mu}m$ was used, whereas $J_c$ was the lowest as $2.18{\times}10^4A/cm^2$when plate-like Mg powder with a size of $34.1{\mu}m$ was used. The relationship between the $J_c$ of $MgB_2$ and the characteristics of the Mg powders used was explained in terms of the volume fraction of $MgB_2$ and the apparent density of the $MgB_2$ pellets.
We investigate the star formation rate, stellar mass, and gas-phase metallicity of local starburst galaxies with different star formation time scales based on their optical spectra. The observation is made using the longslit spectrograph attached to the 4K CCD on the Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory 1.8m telescope, targeting 21 Wolf-Rayet galaxies as young starbursts and 13 UV excess galaxies as slightly older starbursts. A Baldwin-Phillips-Terlevich diagram analysis shows that 50% of the observed targets are pure star-forming galaxies while only 15% are classified as Active Galactic Nuclei. Fraction of galaxies that reside in composite region is higher in UV excess galaxies than in Wolf-Rayet galaxies, suggesting that the AGN development requires extra time after the onset of the star formation. Most of the observed starburst galaxies have stellar masses of $10^{9-11}M_{\odot}$ and stellar formation rates of $0.01-100M_{\odot}yr^{-1}$, and their star formation rates are consistent with that of the SDSS star forming main sequence galaxies of similar stellar mass. There is no significant difference between Wolf-Rayet galaxies and UV excess galaxies in terms of the stellar mass and star formation rate. We also see a mass-metallicity relation for local starbursts with slightly lower metallicity for a given stellar mass, which implies the existence of a strong feedback activity due to the star formation in these galaxies.

In this study, external representation presented in two units, 'Property of Gas' and 'Changes of States of Matter,' in seventh grade of 2015 revised science curriculum, were analyzed to suggest educational implications. External representations presented in five science textbooks were analyzed according to the six criteria, which were 'type of representation,' 'interpretation of surface features,' 'relatedness to text,' 'existence and properties of a caption,' 'degree of correlation between representations comprising a multiple one,' and 'function of representation.' The characteristics of typical representations related to each achievement standard of two units were also analyzed. The results were as follows: The macro representations for 'type of representation', and explicit representations for 'interpretation of surface features' showed highest frequency. For 'relatedness to text' criteria, 'completely related and linked' and 'completely related and unlinked' representations showed the highest frequency. It means that most representations were properly related with the text. There were appropriate captions for most representations. The degree of correlation between representations comprising a multiple one was largely sufficiently linked with regards to the criteria 'degree of correlation between representations comprising a multiple one'. The complete representations for 'function of representation' showed the highest frequency in the aggregate, however incomplete representations showed more frequencies in the inquiry parts. The typical representations for each achievement standard differed in terms of the type, contained information, used symbols and so on. The educational implications with the use of representations presented in seventh grade textbook were discussed.

In this study, we introduce a concept of advanced neurofuzzy polynomial networks(ANFPN), a hybrid modeling architecture combining neurofuzzy networks(NFN) and polynomial neural networks(PNN). These networks are highly nonlinear rule-based models. The development of the ANFPN dwells on the technologies of Computational Intelligence(Cl), namely fuzzy sets, neural networks and genetic algorithms. NFN contributes to the formation of the premise part of the rule-based structure of the ANFPN. The consequence part of the ANFPN is designed using PNN. At the premise part of the ANFPN, NFN uses both the simplified fuzzy inference and error back-propagation learning rule. The parameters of the membership functions, learning rates and momentum coefficients are adjusted with the use of genetic optimization. As the consequence structure of ANFPN, PNN is a flexible network architecture whose structure(topology) is developed through learning. In particular, the number of layers and nodes of the PNN are not fixed in advance but is generated in a dynamic way. In this study, we introduce two kinds of ANFPN architectures, namely the basic and the modified one. Here the basic and the modified architecture depend on the number of input variables and the order of polynomial in each layer of PNN structure. Owing to the specific features of two combined architectures, it is possible to consider the nonlinear characteristics of process system and to obtain the better output performance with superb predictive ability. The availability and feasibility of the ANFPN are discussed and illustrated with the aid of two representative numerical examples. The results show that the proposed ANFPN can produce the model with higher accuracy and predictive ability than any other method presented previously.

For the estimation of greenhouse gas dynamics in forests, it is useful to use a model which simulates both carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycle simultaneously. A forest C model, called FBDC, was developed and validated in Korea. However, studies on development of forest N model are insufficient. This study aimed to suggest a development process of a forest C and N model. We analyzed the general features, structures, ecological processes, input data, output data, and methods of integrating C and N cycles of the VISIT, Biome-BGC, Forest-DNDC, and O-CN. The structure and features of the FBDC were also analyzed. The VISIT was developed by integrating forest C model with a N cycle module, and the new model also could be designed by combining the FBDC with a N cycle module. The VISIT and Forest-DNDC could estimate soil $N_2O$ emissions, and the integrated model should include the processes shared by these models. Especially, the overseas models linked C and N cycles based on N absorption, C absorption, and decomposition of dead organic matter. Therefore, the integration of the FBDC with N cycle module should apply this linkage of structures between C and N cycles. Climate, soil texture, and species distribution data, which are essential for the model development, were available in Korea. However, parameter data associated with N cycle and validation data for soil $N_2O$ emissions need to be obtained by field studies.

Background : Recent discoveries on the physiology of an erection have demonstrated that the organic causes of impotence are more common, and psychogenic impotence is correspondingly less common than was formally believed. The incidence of sexual dysfunctions in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients is largely unknown or may be perfunctorily attributed to the associated illness or to aging. This study investigated whether or not the impotence was related to the COPD itself as well as whether or not it nay stem from organic causes in a notable proportion of such patients. Methods : The sexual function was evaluated in 10 COPD patients and 10 normal control subjects. A nocturnal Rigi Scan was performed to evaluate the erectile function of each group. The level of hormones such as the free testosterone, prolactin and thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) was measured, and a pulmonary function test and arterial blood gas analysis was performed. Results : The time duration and frequency of a penile erection were significantly lower in COPD patients than the controls (p<0.05). In addition, the $PaO_2$ levels correlated with the time duration of the penile erection. Conclusion : These results suggest that COPD is one of the causes of organic erectile dysfunction.
