  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of extruded pellets (EP) containing different levels of protein (51%-55%) and lipid (9%-15%) for growth of flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) comparing with raw fish-based moist pellet (MP). Two replicate groups of 40 fish per each tank (initial mean weight 106 g) were fed one of three experimental EP (EP1, EP2 and EP3) containing different protein and lipid levels, a commercial EP (EP4) and MP for 16 weeks. Survival was not significantly different among all groups. Final mean weight of fish fed MP was significantly lower than that of fish fed EP1, EP2 and EP4 (P<0.05), but not significantly different from fish fed EP3. Feed efficiency of MP-fed fish was significantly lower than fish fed all EP formulations (P<0.05), but no significant difference was observed among the EP groups. Daily feed intake of MP-fed fish was significantly higher than fish fed all EP formulations (P<0.05). Condition factor was not significantly different among all groups. Whole body moisture and crude lipid contents were significantly affected by diet (P<0.05). Growth and feed efficiency of flounder was not affected by EP protein and lipid levels. Dietary formulation used in EP1, EP2 and EP3 can be applied to the practical feeding of flounder.

  • Green coffee beans (CB, Indonesian Mandheling) were fermented with three kinds of mushrooms (Phellinus linteus, PL; Hericium erinaceum, HE; Ganoderma lucidum, GL) or two kinds of mycelia from molds (Monascus purpureus, MP; Monascus ruber, MR) using solid-state culture to enhance physiological activity. After the roasting of fermented green coffee beans, roasted coffees were extracted with a hot-water decoction or 95% ethanol reflux. Yields from hot water extracts (HW, 17.7~25.3%) were higher than those from ethanolic extracts (EE, 9.5~12.2%). Hot-water extracts of roasted coffees from green coffee beans fermented with two molds (MP-CB-HW and MR-CB-HW) showed higher total polyphenols, flavonoids, and DPPH free radical scavenging activity than roasted coffees from non-fermented (CB-HW) or fermented green coffee beans with the three mycelia from mushrooms. MR-CB-HW also had the most potent macrophage stimulating and mitogenic activity (1.32 and 1.40-fold of CB-HW, respectively). In addition, MP-CB-EE and MR-CB-EE did not show any cytotoxicity to the RAW 264.7 cell at a concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$, and these extracts significantly inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production from the LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cell line (38.6 and 37.0% of the LPS-treated group). Meanwhile, the chlorogenic acid concentrations of MP-CB-HW or MR-CB-HW highly increased (to 76.21 or $76.73{\mu}g/mL$, respectively), but caffeine concentrations were not affected by solid-state fermentation. In conclusion, the physiological activities of roasted coffees were enhanced by the solid-state culture of green coffee beans with M. purpureus or M. ruber, suggesting that these roasted coffees could possibly serve industrial applications as functional coffee beverages.

  • An anharmonicity is a fundamental quantity shaping the potential for stretching OH vibration in phenol and its derivatives. The phenomenon is examined both by experimental and theoretical methods. FT-IR and NIR spectra of series of phenols derivatives were measured in the range of fundamental and first two Overtones of $_{s}(OH)$ Vibrations in $CCl_4$ solutions. The electronic influence of substituents on the analyzed frequencies is discussed and correlated with $pK_{a}$ parameters. Ab initio MP2/6-31G(d,p) and B3LYP/6-31G(g,p) calculations of the potential for proton movement in OH group were performed. Equilibrium structures were also determined. The frequencies of fundamental and overtones were calculated by Numerov-type procedure. The results of calculations are compared with the experimental data. The best linear correlations were obtained for the results of MP2/6-31G(d,p) calculations. It was shown that some structural parameters are especially sensitive on substitution. The linear correlations were found between those parameters and spectroscopic data. The results of calculation are compared with available crystallographic data.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidative effects of Paeonia lactiflora (PL) seeds on antioxidative defense system and lipid peroxidation of liver in rats fed high-cholesterol diet. Sprague-Dawley male rats weighing 100 $\pm$10g were randomly assigned into five experimental groups fed 0.5% cholesterol ; HC group which was not supplemented PL seeds extract, 0.1% methanol extract diet group (MP1 group), 0.2% methanol extract diet group (MP2 group), 0.05% ether-souble fraction diet group (EP1 group) and 0.1 % ether-souble fraction diet group (EP2 group). Experimental diets were fed ad libitum to the rats for 3 weeks. The activity of hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD) was not significantly different among all the high cholesterol diet groups. The hepatic glutathione peroxidase (GSHpx) activity in MP2 group was increased to 27% compared to HC group. The activity of hepatic catalase (CAT) was not significantly different among the all high cholesterol diet groups. The hepatic glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity in the EP1 and EP2 groups were increased to 12% and 13%, respectively, as compared to HC group. The levels of hepatic TBARS in the MP1, MP2, EP1 and EP2 groups were reduced by 18%, 21%, 20% and 23%, respectively, as compared with HC group. The contents of lipofuscin in liver was not significantly different among all the experimental groups. The results indicated that PL seeds extract may be reduced oxidative damage by activating antioxidative defense system of hepatic in rats fed high-cholesterol diets. • The optimized structures and vibrational frequencies for $Ca^+-(CO)_n$ and $Ca^+-(CO_2)_n$ (n=1,2) complexes were calculated with MP2 and B3LYP methods employing 6-311++G(2d,p) basis sets. Also the binding energies were investigated for all complexes to compare the stabilities. For $Ca^+-(CO)_n$ C-bonded complexes are more stable than O-bonded complexes. Two stable conformations, linear and $C_{2v}$ form, are possible for $Ca^+-(CO)_2$ complexes and the $C_{2v}$ form is more stable than the linear form. $Ca^+-(CO_2)_2$ also has two possible conformations and linear form has slightly lower energy than $C_{2v}$ form.

  • This paper implements optimized Time Scale Modification (TSM) system using ITU G.729 speech decoder and Dual SOLA algorithm. The proposed system assume 8 Kz sampling rate, 80 samples/frame input speech from the ITU G.729 speech Decoder and the TSM (Time Scale Modification) feature of Dual SOLA produces the high quality output speech that was slow-down or speed up as a user's choice. Especially, the proposed Optimized Dual SOLA base on various simulations and theoretical analysis, and the additional interpolation procedure of the speech makes it possible to setup high performance integrated TSM system at the maximum time scale modification rate. The system performance is analyzed and verified with various input speech and playback speed.

  • The present study was carried out to examine the fertilizability of the mouse oocytes pre-ex-posed to dbcAMP which is a well-known inhibitor of the oocyte maturation. The oocytes once cultured in the dbcMP-containing medium for a certain length of, time were cultivated in the dbcMp-free medium to induced the maturation, then mixed with sperms, and observed following culture for 24 hours. The fertilization rate of cocytes was judged by the index of the number of 2-cell embryo developed 24hr following insemination. The fertilization rate of the oocyte previously incubated with dbcAMP (100 g/ml) for 2, 4, 8 16 hours was 32.3, 14.5, 4.7 and 8.8%, respectively, while that of the control was 53.3% indicating that the fertilizability was decreased as a function of time exposed to dbcAMP. The pretreatment of dbcMP, however, didn't affect the process of sperm penetration to egg. In addition, there is no prominent changes in the morphological architecture of fertielized eggs which has been exposed to dbcAMP as revealed by electron microscopic observation. Consequendy, it can be concluded that the mouse cocytes once inhibited their maturation by dbcMP may retain, in some extent, the fertilizability, although most of the fertilized egg may not proceed to further development because of the failure of pronucleus formation.

  • 2-Fluorocyclopropanemethanol and 2-chlorocyclopropanemethanol have been studied with MP2 and B3LYP methods with 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. The optimized structures show several stable conformers. The most stable conformer show the possibility of intramolecular hydrogen bonding, but the distance between $H{\cdots}F$, or $H{\cdots}Cl$ is longer than van der Waals radii and it may not be strong covalent bonding. Rather the second stable conformer has optimum structure for intramolecular hydrogen bonding but the energy of the conformer is 5 ~ 7 kJ higher than the most stable conformer. When the methanol group and the F or Cl atom have opposite direction, the conformers are less stable than the most stable conformer.

  • Bioassay-guided isolation of the dried roots of Aralia continentalis led to the isolation of (-)-pimara-8(14), 15dien-19-oic acid (continentalic acid) and $(24E)-Stigmasta-5,22-dien-3{\beta}-ol$ (stagmasterol). Their structures were elucidated using $^1H-NMR$, $^{13}C-NMR$, UV and mass spectra analyses. The gram-positive bacterial, including methicilline-resistant (MRSA), were more sensitive to the continentalic acid and stagmasterol than gram-negative bacterial.

  • The HF-SCF, MP2 and B3LYP calculations have been performed on the two conceivable clusters $(HF)_2(CO)$ trimers as well as their dimer complexes FH…FH, FH…CO and FH…OC applying $6-31+G^{\ast}^{\ast}$, and $6-311+G^{\ast}^{\ast}$ basis sets. A variety of ground state properties of these trimer complexes have been listed, and compared with corresponding properties of isolated monomers and combined dimers. It was calculated that FH…CO is more stable than FH…OC by average 0.85 kcal/mol and F-H…F-H…C≡O is more stable than F-H…F-H…O≡C by 1-2 kcal/mol. The C≡O stretching bands of the F-H…F-H…C≡O and F-H…F-H…O≡C were red shifted by 24, $37\;cm^{-1}$ compared with the FH…CO and FH…OC respectively. Also, H-F stretching bands were red shifted by 54 and $353\;cm^{-1}$.
