Effect of substrate concentration on the operating characteristics of microbial electrolysis cells (기질 농도에 따른 미생물전기분해전지의 운전 특성)

  • This study examined the effect of input substrate concentration on hydrogen production of microbial electrolysis cells. To compare the performance of MEC according to the input substrate concentration, six laboratory-scale MEC reactors were operated by sequentially increasing the input substrate concentration from 2 g/L of sodium acetate, to 4 g/L, and 6 g/L. The current density, hydrogen production, and SCOD removal rate were analyzed, and energy efficiency and cathodic hydrogen recovery were calculated to compare the performance of MEC. The maximum volumetric current density was obtained at 4 g/L condition (76.3 A/m3) and it decreased to 19.0 A/m3, when the input concentration was increased to 6 g/L, which was a 75% decrease compared to the 4 g/L input condition. Maximum hydrogen production was obtained also at 4 g/L condition (47.3 ± 16.8 mL), but maximum hydrogen yield was obtained at 2 g/L input condition (1.1 L H2/g CODin). Energy efficiencies were also highest in 2 g/L condition; the lowest result was observed at 6 g/L condition. Maximum electrical energy efficiency was 76.4%, and the maximum overall energy efficiency was 39.7% at 2 g/L condition. However, when the substrate concentration increased to 6 g/L, the performance was drastically decreased. Cathodic hydrogen recovery also showed a similar tendency with energy efficiency, with the lowest concentration condition showing the best performance. It can be concluded that operating at low input substrate concentration might be better when considering not only hydrogen yield but also energy efficiency.

  • Owing to the development of Internet of Things (IoT), the fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication is going to foresee a substantial increase of mobile traffic demand. Energy efficiency and spectral efficiency are the challenges in a 5G network. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a promising technique to increase the system efficiency by adaptive power control (PC) in a 5G network. This paper proposes an efficient PC scheme based on evolutionary game theory (EGT) model for uplink power-domain NOMA system. The proposed PC scheme allows users to adaptively adjusts their transmit power level in order to improve their payoffs or throughput which results in an increase of the system efficiency. In order to separate the user signals, a successive interference cancellation (SIC) receiver installed at the base station (BS) site. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed EGT-based PC scheme outperforms the traditional game theory-based PC schemes and orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in terms of energy efficiency and spectral efficiency.

A Study on the Removal of LAS using TiO2 Photocatalyst (TiO2 광촉매를 이용한 LAS의 제거에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to delineate removal efficiency of the Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates(LAS) in solution by $TiO_2$ photocatalytic oxidation as a function of the following different experimental conditions : initial concentration of LAS, $TiO_2$ concentration, UV wavelength and pH of the solution. It was increased with decreasing initial concentration of LAS and with decreasing pH of the solution. Removal efficiency increased with increasing $TiO_2$ concentration but was almost the same at $TiO_2$ concentration of 2 g/L and 3 g/L, i.e., for initial LAS concentration of 50 mg/L. It was removal efficiency was 85% at 150 min in the case of $TiO_2$ concentration of 0.5 g/L but 100% after 150 min in the case of $TiO_2$ concentration of 1 g/L, 100% after 110 min in the case of $TiO_2$ concentration of 2 g/L and 3 g/L. UV wavelength affection on the removal efficiency of LAS decreased in the order of 254, 312 and 365 nm as increasing wavelength. But the removal efficiency of LAS was nearly the same at UV wavelength of 254 nm and 312 nm.

Influence of the Lysine to Protein Ratio in Practical Diets on the Efficiency of Nitrogen Use in Growing Pigs

  • Twelve gilts were used to investigate the effect of lysine to protein ratio (5.2 g lysine/100 g CP vs. 6.7 g lysine/100 g CP) in practical diets on nitrogen retention and the efficiency of utilization in growing pigs. Treatments involved 2 levels of dietary lysine (5.2 or 6.7 g/100 g CP) and 3 levels of dietary crude protein (11, 14 and 17% in diet). Nitrogen retention was greatest when pigs were fed the control diet containing 17% protein. Nitrogen retention progressively increased as dietary protein increased (p < 0.01), but it was not affected by lysine concentration (g/100 g CP). Apparent biological value (ABV, nitrogen retained/apparently digestible nitrogen) was estimated to be ~50% at the maximum nitrogen retention. ABV was not affected by lysine concentration, but declined (p < 0.05) as the dietary protein level increased. The efficiency of intake N used for maximum nitrogen retention was approximately 44%. One gram of lysine supported approximately 9 to 10 g apparent protein accretion (nitrogen retention ${\times}$ 6.25/lysine intake) in pigs fed control diets. The efficiency of lysine utilization for protein accretion was lower in pigs fed high-lysine diets (6.7 g lysine/l00 g CP) so that 1 g of lysine accounted for 7 to 8 g of protein accretion in these pigs (p < 0.01). The lysine required to support maximum nitrogen retention in pigs fed high-lysine diets was higher than that in pigs fed control diets, which suggests that lysine was over-fortified relative to crude protein, since practical diets can not be formulated without excess of some amino acids. In summary the concentration of 5.2 g total lysine/100 g CP in diet is more appropriate for corn-soybean diets than the commonly suggested the content of 6.7 g total lysine/100 g CP.

Utilization of biofilter/photo-catalytic reactor system for the simultaneous treatment of hydrogen sulfide and toluene from waste-air

  • Transient behavior of biofilter/photo-catalytic reactor system was observed to eliminate both hydrogen sulfide and toluene from waste air at its four sampling ports. The biofilter was packed with a equivolume mixture of granular activated carbon(GAC) and compost as packing media on which Thiobacillus sp. IW and Burkholderia cepacia G4 were inoculated and were fixed. The biofilter/photo-catalytic reactor system was run for eight stages of operation under various operating conditions. As a result the removal efficiencies of hydrogen sulfide and toluene began to decrease from 100% after the inlet loads of hydrogen sulfide and toluene surpassed ca. 100 $S-g/m^{3}/h$ and $161g/m^{3}/h$, respectively, and were rapidly decreased to 60% after the inlet loads of hydrogen sulfide and toluene were increased to 200 $S-g/m^{3}/h$ and $644g/m^{3}/h$, respectively.

  • This research introduces a novel approach to address the complexities of the 5G ceramic antenna manufacturing process through the utilization of a blockchain-based 5G ceramic antenna manufacturing (B-5GAM) architecture. By seamlessly integrating blockchain technology and smart contracts, this architecture enhances transparency, security, and efficiency within the realm of 5G ceramic antenna manufacturing. The impact of applying blockchain to enhance security measures, process efficiency, and overall reliability is evident, not only optimizing the production process but also establishing a robust foundation for future advancements in communication technology. Validation of the B-5GAM architecture was achieved by manufacturing 5G antennas and implementing blockchain and smart contracts through algorithm proposals, confirming their practicality in real manufacturing environments. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of employing blockchain and smart contracts in the field of 5G ceramic antenna manufacturing, confirming their potential to enhance manufacturing efficiency and reliability.

Photocatalytic Performance of CoS2-Graphene-TiO2 Ternary Composites for Reactive Black B (RBB) Degradation

  • In this study we examined the photo-degradation efficiency of $CoS_2-G-TiO_2$ nanocomposites under visible light irritation using Reactive Black B (RBB) as standard dye, $CoS_2-G-TiO_2$ nanocomposites synthesized by facial microwave assist technique, and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectroscopic analysis. Our results show the efficiency of the $CoS_2-G-TiO_2$ ternary nanocomposite is better than $CoS_2-G$ and $TiO_2-G$ nanocomposite. The degradation efficiency of $CoS_2-G-TiO_2$ nanocomposite was found approximately 89% of Reactive Black B (RBB) degraded after 180 min. Our results will open new way for the development of a new ternary nanocomposite photocatalytic application.

  • The reactive ion etching (RIE) technology which enables nano-texturatization of surface is applied on monocrystalline silicon solar cell. The additional RIE process on alkalized textured surface further improves the blue response and short circuit current. Such parameter is characterized by surface reflectance and quantum efficiency measurement. By varying the RIE process time and matching the subsequent processes, the absolute efficiency gain of 0.13% is achieved. However, the result indicates potential efficiency gain could be higher due to process integration. The critical etch process time is discussed which minimizes both front surface reflectance and etching damage, considering the challenges of required system throughput in industry.

  • This study is intended to analyze the relation between G. D. Weisman's Way finding 4 elements the accessibility and efficiency of consumers as to eternal area for Seoul historical museum. The findings are summarized as the following three aspects. First, G. D. Weisman's Way finding element introduced in this study had a significant impact on visitor satisfaction.. It leads to the following conclusion: The higher the impact is, the greater accessaccessibility and efficiency are. Second, among 4 elements, the factor that had the biggest impact on the accessibility was 'visual-perceptual accessibility'. Thus, 'visual-perceptual accessibility' should be considered first to boost the accessibility to consumers. Third, among 4 elements, the factor that had the biggest impact on the efficiency was 'sign system'. Thus, 'sign system' should be considered first to boost the efficiency to consumers.

Adsorptive Removal of 2-Methylisoborneol and Geosmin in Raw Water Using Activated Carbon and Zeolite (활성탄과 제올라이트를 이용한 상수원수 중 이취미물질(2-MIB, Geosmin)의 흡착제거)

  • This study was performed to investigate the recovery efficacy of 2-methylisobomeol (2-MIB) and Geosmin, odor contaminants produced by algae, by pretreatment techniques, and also to investigate both adsorption characteristics and removal efficiency to get some information for the effective removal of 2-MIB and Geosmin by batch experiments. In pretreatment experiments, the best recovery efficiency of both odorants at 0.2 and $2\;{\mu}g/L$ in raw water was 30 mL of sampling size, 9 g NaCl for salting out headspace of sampling phase and 40 minutes of adsorption. At the best condition, the recovery efficiency of 2-MIB was 85% at $0.2\;{\mu}g/L$ and 95% at $2\;{\mu}g/L$, whereas the efficiency of Geosmin was lower than that of 2-MIB : 61% at $0.2\;{\mu}g/L$ and 81% at $2\;{\mu}g/L$. In batch experiments, the removal efficiency of the Geosmin and 2-MIB by adsorbents using distilled water were increased in comparison with raw water, the efficiency in raw water was little different by their concentrations. When these results were applied to the Freundrich adsorption isotherm, the K value of 2-MIB for zeolite, coal activated carbon, and coconut activated carbon was 0.671, 1.811, and 1.340, respectively, and the value of Geosmin was 0.6125, 1.771, and 1.5191, respectively. Thus the adsorption efficiency of 2-MIB and Geosmin was in the order of zeolite, coconut activated carbon, coal activated carbon.
