  • To find an optimal solution with genetic algorithm, it is desirable to maintain the population sire as large as possible. In some cases, however, the cost to evaluate each individual is relatively high and it is difficult to maintain large population. To solve this problem we propose a novel genetic algorithm based on fuzzy clustering, which considerably reduces evaluation number without any significant loss of its performance by evaluating only one representative for each cluster. The fitness values of other individuals are estimated from the representative fitness values indirectly. We have used fuzzy c-means algorithm and distributed the fitness using membership matrix, since it is hard to distribute precise fitness values by hard clustering method to individuals which belong to multiple groups. Nine benchmark functions have been investigated and the results are compared to six hard clustering algorithms with Euclidean distance and Pearson correlation coefficients as fitness distribution method.

  • This paper presents a new clustering algorithm called FCM algorithm for the design of fuzzy controller. FCM is an extended version of FCM(Fuzzy c-Means) algorithm and can estimate the number of clusters automatically and give membership grades $u_{ik}$ suitable for making fuzzy control rules. This paper also shows an example of its application to the line pursuit control of a car.

  • Conventional fuzzy c-means (FCM) algorithms have achieved a good clustering performance. However, they do not fully utilize the spatial information in the image and this results in lower clustering performance for images that have low contrast, vague boundaries, and noises. To overcome this issue, we propose an enhanced spatial fuzzy c-means (ESFCM) algorithm that takes into account the influence of neighboring pixels on the center pixel by assigning weights to the neighbors in a $3{\times}3$ square window. To evaluate between the proposed ESFCM and various FCM based segmentation algorithms, we utilized clustering validity functions such as partition coefficient ($V_{pc}$), partition entropy ($V_{pe}$), and Xie-Bdni function ($V_{xb}$). Experimental results show that the proposed ESFCM outperforms other FCM based algorithms in terms of clustering validity functions.

  • In this study, we introduce a new category of fuzzy inference systems based on information granulation to carry out the model identification of complex and nonlinear systems. Informal speaking, information granules are viewed as linked collections of objects (data, in particular) drawn together by the criteria of proximity, similarity, or functionality. To identify the structure of fuzzy rules we use genetic algorithms (GAs). Granulation of information with the aid of Hard C-Means (HCM) clustering algorithm help determine the initial parameters of fuzzy model such as the initial apexes of the membership functions and the initial values of polynomial functions being used in the premise and consequence part of the fuzzy rules. And the initial parameters are tuned effectively with the aid of the genetic algorithms and the least square method (LSM). The proposed model is contrasted with the performance of the conventional fuzzy models in the literature.

  • In this paper, we propose the fuzzy neural networks based on fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm. Typically, the generation of fuzzy rules have the problem that the number of fuzzy rules exponentially increases when the dimension increases. To solve this problem, the fuzzy rules of the proposed networks are generated by partitioning the input space in the scatter form using FCM clustering algorithm. The premise parameters of the fuzzy rules are determined by membership matrix by means of FCM clustering algorithm. The consequence part of the rules is expressed in the form of polynomial functions and the learning of fuzzy neural networks is realized by adjusting connections of the neurons, and it follows a back-propagation algorithm. The proposed networks are evaluated through the application to nonlinear process.

  • Evolutionary algorithms such as genetic algorithm (GA) have been proven their effectiveness when applying to the design of fuzzy models. However, it tends to suffer from computationally expensWive due to the slow convergence speed. In this study, we propose an approach to develop fuzzy models by means of an improved differential evolution (IDE) to overcome this limitation. The improved differential evolution (IDE) is realized by means of an orthogonal approach and differential evolution. With the invoking orthogonal method, the IDE can search the solution space more efficiently. In the design of fuzzy models, we concern two mechanisms, namely structure identification and parameter estimation. The structure identification is supported by the IDE and C-Means while the parameter estimation is realized via IDE and a standard least square error method. Experimental studies demonstrate that the proposed model leads to improved performance. The proposed model is also contrasted with the quality of some fuzzy models already reported in the literature.

  • The use of fuzzy theory in task of pattern recognition may be applicable gases and odours classification and recognition. This paper reports results obtained from fuzzy c-means algorithms to patterns generated by odour sensing system using an array of conducting polymer sensors, for volatile chemicals. For the volatile chemicals clustering problem, the three unsupervise fuzzy c-means algorithms were applied. From among the pattern clustering methods, the FCMAW algorithm, which updated the cluster centres more frequently, consistently outperformed. It has been confirmed as an outstanding clustering algorithm throughout experimental trials.

  • The rapid increase of information imposes new demands of content management. The purpose of automatic audio segmentation and classification is to meet the rising need for efficient content management. With this reason, this paper proposes a high-accuracy algorithm that segments audio signals and classifies them into different classes such as speech, music, silence, and environment sounds. The proposed algorithm utilizes support vector machine (SVM) to detect audio-cuts, which are boundaries between different kinds of sounds using the parameter sequence. We then extract feature vectors that are composed of statistical data and they are used as an input of fuzzy c-means (FCM) classifier to partition audio-segments into different classes. To evaluate segmentation and classification performance of the proposed SVM-FCM based algorithm, we consider precision and recall rates for segmentation and classification accuracy for classification. Furthermore, we compare the proposed algorithm with other methods including binary and FCM classifiers in terms of segmentation performance. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other methods in both precision and recall rates.

  • In this paper, we introduce a genetic optimization of fuzzy set-fuzzy model using successive tuning method to carry out the model identification of complex and nonlinear systems. To identity we use genetic alrogithrt1 (GA) sand C-Means clustering. GA is used for determination the number of input, the seleced input variables, the number of membership function, and the conclusion inference type. Information Granules (IG) with the aid of C-Means clustering algorithm help determine the initial paramters of fuzzy model such as the initial apexes of the, membership functions in the premise part and the initial values of polyminial functions in the consequence part of the fuzzy rules. The overall design arises as a hybrid structural and parametric optimization. Genetic algorithms and C-Means clustering are used to generate the structurally as well as parametrically optimized fuzzy model. To identify the structure and estimate parameters of the fuzzy model we introduce the successive tuning method with variant generation-based evolution by means of GA. Numerical example is included to evaluate the performance of the proposed model.

  • This paper presents hybrid classification method to improve the performance of satellite images classification by combining Bayesian maximum likelihood classifier, ISODATA clustering and fuzzy C-Means algorithm. In this paper, the training data of each class were generated by separating the spectral signature using ISODATA clustering. We can classify according to pixel's membership grade followed by cluster center of fuzzy C-Means algorithm as the mean value of training data for each class. Bayesian maximum likelihood classifier is performed with prior probability by result of fuzzy C-Means classification. The results shows that proposed method could improve performance of classification method and also perform classification with no concern about spectral signature of the training data. The proposed method Is applied to a Landsat TM satellite image for the verifying test.
