This study analyzed the volatility spillover effect between international non-ferrous metal futures markets using the BEKK-GARCH model. Statistical data are futures price data of copper (CU), aluminum (AL), nickel (NI), tin (SN) from Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) and London Metal Exchange (LME) from April 1, 2015 to December 31, 2021. Combining the research results, first, in the case of copper, aluminum, and nickel, it was found that there was a two-way volatility spillover effect between the Shanghai and London markets, and the international influence of the London market was greater. Second, in the case of the tin, it was found that the Shanghai market has a volatility spillover effect on the London market from stage I, and it is strengthened in stage II. Third, in the case of nickel, it was found that there was a two-way volatility spillover effect in the first stage, but in the second stage, the London market had a unidirectional volatility spillover effect with respect to the Shanghai market. This study confirmed that China's influence in the international non-ferrous metal futures market is gradually increasing. In addition, it suggested that international investors can engage in arbitrage and hedging using China's non-ferrous metal futures market.
This study examines whether won/dollar futures have price discovery function and volatility spillover effect or not, using intraday won/dollar futures prices, volumes, and spot rates for the interval from March 2, 2005 through May 30, 2005. Futures prices and spot rates are non-stationary, but there is the cointegration relationship between two time series. Futures returns, spot returns, and volumes are stationary. Asymmetric effects on volatility in futures returns and spot returns does not exist. Analytical results of mean equations of the BGARCH-EC (bivariate GARCH-error correction) model show that the increase of futures returns raise spot returns after 5 minutes, which implies that futures returns lead spot returns and won/dollar futures have price discovery function. In addition, the long-run equilibrium relationship between the two returns could help forecast spot returns. Analytical results of variance equations indicate that short-run innovations in the futures market positively affect the conditional variances of spot returns, that is, there is the volatility spillover effect in the won/dollar futures market. A dummy variable of volumes does not have an effect on two returns but influences significantly on two conditional variances.
This paper tested the lead-lag relationship as well as the symmetric and asymmetric volatility spillover effects between international currency futures markets and cash markets. We use five kinds of currency spot and futures markets such as British pound, Australian and Canadian dollar, Brasilian Real and won/dollar spot and futures markets. daily closing prices covering from September 15, 2003 to July 30, 2009. For this purpose we employed dynamic time series models such as the Granger causality based on VAR and time-varying MA(1)-GJR-GARCH(1, 1)-M. The main empirical results are as follows; First, according to Granger causality test, we find that the bilateral lead-lag relationship between the five countries' currency spot and futures market. The price discover effect from currency futures markets to spot market is relatively stronger than that from currency spot to futures markets. Second, based on the time varying GARCH model, we find that there is a bilateral conditional mean spillover effects between the five currency spot and futures markets. Third, we also find that there is a bilateral asymmetric volatility spillover effects between British pound, Canadian dollar, Brasilian Real and won/dollar spot and futures market. However there is a unilateral asymmetric volatility spillover effect from Australian dollar futures to cash market, not vice versa. From these empirical results we infer that most of currency futures markets have a much better price discovery function than currency cash market and are inefficient to the information.
This paper focuses on computational contractual distinctions as an explanation for the spread between a forward contract and a similar futures contract which is derived and investigated. We evaluate this spread by constructing a time series model, which was established based on copula functions, and also show that the forward-futures spread is more significant for long maturity.
This paper investigates whether the futures market responds to the news more sensitively and uses more diverse information than the spot market. The sensitivity to the news is measured by the coefficients of the model which regresses the daily changes in the futures prices to the daily changes in the theoretical prices computed from spot prices using the spot-futures parity. The diversity of news is measured by the mean range differences ($\overline{RD}$), mean hi-price differences($\overline{HD}$) and mean low-price differences. The data in this paper is the closing prices of the nearest-to-maturity and the second-nearest-to-maturity contracts of the KOSPI 200 index futures. As the estimates of the relative sensitivity of the futures prices($^{\beta}$) for the whole-period sample are not significantly different from 1, the sensitivity of two markets to the news are not different. However, $\hat{\beta}$ of the most recent period(Nov. 2002 to Dec. 2005) are strongly different from 1. And, in the most recent period, the futures price changes for the good news, which is defined as the price increase of KOSPI of more than 1.5% in a day, show additional sensitivity. Since the mean range different which measures the relative diversity of information used, are not significantly different from 0 for the whole-period and subperiod samples, and this can be interpreted that the futures market does not use more diverse information than the spot market. However, the mean high-price difference, which measures the relative diversity of good news, are significantly different from 0 for the nearest-maturity contracts in the whole-period and subperiod samples. This evidence supports that the futures prices reflects more diverse good news which brings price increase in the market.
Using high-frequency data for 2 years, this study investigates intraday lead-lag relationship between stock index and stock index futures markets in Korea and China. We found that there are some differences in price discovery and volatility transmission between Korea and China after the stock index futures markets was introduced. Following Stoll-Whaley(1990) and Chan(1992), the multiple regression is estimated to examine the lead-lag patterns between the two markets by Newey-West's(1987) heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation consistent covariance matrix(HAC matrix). Empirical results of KOSPI 200 shows that the futures market leads the cash market and weak evidence that the cash market leads the futures market. New market information disseminates in the futures market before the stock market with index arbitrageurs then stepping in quickly to bring the cost-of-carry relation back into alignment. The regression tests for the conditional volatility which is estimated using EGARCH model do not show that there is a clear pattern of the futures market leading the stock market in terms of the volatility even though controlling nonsynchronous trading effects. This implies that information in price innovations that originate in the futures market is transmitted to the volatility of the cash market. Empirical results of CSI 300 shows that the cash market is found to play a more dominant role in the price discovery process after the Chinese index started a sharp decline immediately after the stock index futures were introduced. The new stock index futures markets does not function well in its price discovery performance at its infancy stage, apparently due to high barriers to entry into this emerging futures markets. Based on EGAECH model, the results uncover strong bi-directional dependence in the intraday volatility of both markets.
This study aims to propose technical trading rules for Bitcoin futures and empirically analyze investment performance. Investment strategies include standard trading rules such as VMA, TRB, FR, MACD, RSI, BB, using Bitcoin futures daily data from December 18, 2017 to March 31, 2021. The trend-following rules showed higher investment performance than the comparative strategy B&H. Compared to KOSPI200 index futures, Bitcoin futures investment performance was higher. In particular, the investment performance has increased significantly in Sortino Ratio, which reflects downside risk. This study can find academic significance in that it is the first attempt to systematically analyze the investment performance of standard technical trading rules of Bitcoin futures. In future research, it is necessary to improve investment performance through the use of deep learning models or machine learning models to predict the price of Bitcoin futures.
Financial markets are operating 24 hours a day throughout the world and interrelated in increasingly complex ways. Telecommunications and computer networks tie together markets in the from of electronic entities. Financial practitioners are inundated with an ever larger stream of data, produced by the rise of sophisticated database technologies, on the rising number of market instruments. As conventional analytic techniques reach their limit in recognizing data patterns, financial firms and institutions find neural network techniques to solve this complex task. Neural networks have found an important niche in financial a, pp.ications. We a, pp.y neural networks to Standard and Poor's (S&P) 500 stock index futures trading to predict the futures marker behavior. The results through experiments with a commercial neural, network software do su, pp.rt future use of neural networks in S&P 500 stock index futures trading.
The purpose of this study is to ascertain that how the futures market of the Japanese frozen shrimp that is the only fisheries asset all over the world can be efficient. Accordingly, this paper examines efficiency and information flow of the Japanese frozen shrimp market using data from Kansai Commodities Exchange frozen shrimp futures closing prices and spot prices. And then this paper estimates a forward price model using that data. From the model, risk premium is estimated and we could also analyse the future information flow into the futures market which reveals future spot prices. This thesis reached to conclusions as follows: First, the null of zero risk premium is rejected and the value of that is negative. Second, the time pattern of information flow into the futures market is that most of the information on future price arrives within a week and for the last week, most of relevant information is already incorporated. The result of this study contrasts with that of Stockman(1978) about currency futures market of U.S.
Recently, we have been witnessing new records of crude oil price hikes. One question which naturally arises would be the possibility and accuracy of forecasting crude oil prices. This study tries to answer the relative predictability of futures prices compared to the forecasts based on experts system. Using WTI crude oil spot and futures prices, this study performs simple statistical comparisons in forecasting accuracy and a formal test of differences in forecasting errors. According to statistical results, WTI crude oil futures market turns out to be equally efficient relative to EIA experts system. Consequently, WTI crude oil futures market could be utilized as a market-based tool for price forecasting and/or resource allocation for both of petroleum producers and consumers.
