  • Low cycle fatigue tests on the hydrogenated welding seam of Zr-Sn-Nb alloy at room temperature and 360 ℃ had been carried out by using the funnel-shaped flat specimens. The relationships between nominal stress & strain directly measured across the funnel and local stress & strain at the root of the funnel are given by considering cyclic plasticity correction. The results show that the fatigue resistance of welding seam at room temperature is only slightly better than that at 360 ℃. Probabilistic fatigue life curves are obtained by using a two-parameter power function.

  • Funnel chest is the most common deformity of the sternum. It is characterized by a funnel shaped depression of the sternum with sharp angulation and lengthening of the costal cartilages, with the result that the cartilages point posteriorly. We have experienced with eight cases of funnel chest for 2 years recently, and they were corrected by the method of Ravitch operation with or without Kirschner`s wire. The postoperative course was uneventful. And now we report these with literature review.

  • In an annular injection supersonic ejector, the supersonic primary flow is injected along the side wall, therefore a funnel-shaped shock wave is generated by the contraction angle of the mixing chamber. In the present study, we developed a simple funnel shock wave model using 2-D wedge and conical shock wave relations. In result, the secondary flow pressure can be predicted more accurately than using a simple 2-D wedge shock wave model. Through the same analysis, the compression ratio and the adiabatic efficiency according to the entrainment ratio were calculated.

  • A 10" carbon nanotube field emission display device was fabricated with a novel structure with a hopping electron spacer (HES) by screen printing technique. HES plays a role of preventing the broadening of electron beams emitted from carbon nanotubes without electrical discharge during operation. The structure of the novel tetrode is composed of carbon nanotube emitters on a cathode electrode, a gate electrode, an extracting electrode coated on the top side of a HES, and an anode. HES contains funnel-shaped holes of which the inner surfaces are coated with MgO. Electrons extracted through the gate are collected inside the funnel-shaped holes. They hop along the hole surface to the top extracting electrode. In this study the effects of the addition of HES on emission characteristics of field emission display were investigated. An active ozone treatment for the complete removal of residues of organic binders in the emitter devices was applied to the field emission display panel as a post-treatment.

  • Anatomical features of the renal papilla and pelvis and ultrastructures of the epithelium covering these areas in four species of mammals were studied by means of light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In terms of the morphology of mammalian kidney types distinguished by Sperber(1944), Pfeiffer(1968) and Schmidt-Nielsen(1977), the kidneys of animal species used in this experiment were; 1) the mouse kidney with the fornix between a long conical papilla and the funnel-shaped pelvis, 2) the guinea pig kidney with the peripelvic column and pelvic pouch between a short conical papilla and the funnel-shaped pelvis, 3) the dog kidney with the peripelvic column and pelvic pouch between the crest-shaped papilla and the funnel-shaped pelvis, and 4) the cattle kidney which is divided into multiple renculi with minor and major calyces and pelvis. The renal papilla was lined with the simple or pseudostratified columnar epithelium which covered the inner zone of the renal medulla. The epithelial cells with numerous short microvilli on the surface contained a few organelles. In the mouse, the fornix was lined with one to two cell-layered cuboidal epithelium which covered the outer zone of the renal medulla and a part of the cortex. The epithelial cells of the fornix with numerous short microvilli or microridges on the surface had well-developed organelles. In the guinea pig, the peripelvic column was lined with the simple cuboidal or low columnar epithelium which covered the outer zone of the renal medulla. The epithelial cells with numerous short microvilli on the surface contained well-developed organelles. The pelvic pouch was lined with the pseudostratified columnar epithelium which was composed of four kinds of cells; the secretory cell with small electron-dense granules (310 nm), the secretory cell with large granules (720 nm) showing various electron densities, the mitochondria-rich cell with a single cilium, and the basal cell. Pelves of the mouse and guinea pig, peripelvic column, pelvic pouch and pelvis of the dog, and minor and major calyces and pelvis of the cattle were lined with the transitional epithelium. The fusiform vesicles in the superficial cells of the epithelium were highly developed in the dog, relatively well developed in the mouse and guinea pig, and poorly developed in the cattle. From the above findings, it is suggested that the transport of solutes and water of the urine in the pelvic cavity can take place through the epithelia covering the renal papilla and fornix of the mouse, papilla and peripelvic column of the guinea pig, and papillae of the dog and the cattle. And specialized cell types in the epithelium of the guinea pig pelvic pouch, two kinds of secretory cells and mitochondria-rich cell with a single cilium, could have peculiar functions in the renal pelvis, respectively.

  • Among the four kinds of silk glands in the funnel-web spider Agelena limbata, the ampullate gland for dragline silk production is the most predominate one in both sexes, and is composed of three functional parts-excretory duct, storage ampulla and convoluted tail regions. Two pairs of major ampullate glands send secretory ductules to the anterior spinnerets, and another two pairs of minor ampullate glands supply the middle spinnerets. There are no apparent differences between the major and minor ampullate glands not only the external spigots but also their internal silk glands. However, the microstructure is very unique in this spider, because each gland has spherical shaped storage sac with twig-like branched tails. Nevertheless, the wall of the secretory region is similarly composed of a single layer of epithelial cells. The mature secretory silks in glandular epithelium are closely packed and accumulated as electron-opaque vesicles. Most of the secretory products which originated from the rough endoplasmic reticula(rER) are grown up by fusion with the surrounding small vesicles however, the Golgi complex does not seem to play an important role in this process of secretion.

  • Carchesium polypinum and Vorticella campanula were collected in freshwater ponds and reservoirs on Jindo Island and other places in Korea. These two vorticellids are newly recorded in Korea. The two species are described using live and silver impregnated cell observations, morphometry, line drawings, and microphotographs. Characterizations were based on the following diagnostic features: Carchesium polypinum was observed mainly as a funnel to fanshaped colony, basically dichotomous branching pattern, discontinuous spasmoneme, subconical shaped zooid, J shaped macronucleus, ventrally positioned single contractile vacuole, and pellicular striation with 61-80 rows between the peristomial lip and aboral ciliary wreath, and 18-30 rows between the aboral ciliary wreath and scopula. Vorticella campanula was conspicuously characterized by the broadly bulged peristomial lip, wide conical shaped zooid, J or S shaped macronucleus, ventrally positioned single contractile vacuole and pellicular striation with 64-75 rows between the peristomial lip and aboral ciliary wreath, and 27-41 rows between the aboral ciliary wreath and scopula. We provide redescriptions of two well-known vorticellids with detailed drawings and descriptions of oral ciliatures from Jindo Island and other places on the Korean peninsula.

  • The pectus excavatum or funnel shaped thorax is a relatively frequent malformation of the chest wall which composed of depressed sternum and costal cartilage. The so-called sternal turnover operation for pectus excavatum has been disappointing due to postoperative complication such as fistula formation with necrosis of bone and muscle. Thus, the need of preserved vascular pedicle to sternum was stressed in this type of operation, keeping the bilateral internal mammary vessels preserved. We have experienced two cases of modified sternal turnover in children and obtained satisfactory postoperative results.

  • The Weolseong diatreme crops out about 28km south of Kyeongju City, Korea. The diatreme is a circular shaped volcanic vent, 1.2km in diameter, that formed subaerially, probably by phreatomagmatic (phreatoplinian) eruptions of Tertiary age. The rocks occupying the display well developed layering produced by base surge and proximal ba11istic fall. Accretionary lapilli are a common component. The rocks comprise tuff breccia and fine-grained rock derived from the vent walls. This sequence has undergone subsidence of at least over 650m. Most explanations for the presence of bedded tuffs at considerable depths within a volcanic pipe involve subsidence. Comparable amount of subsidence are recorded in many diatremes in other parts of the world. The ore body is distinctly circular and funnel shaped in center of diatreme. The vent area of diatreme served as channel ways for the mineralized hydrothermal fluids.

  • This is a case report of surgically treated esophageal traction diverticulum which was resulted from postpneumonectomy empyema. In March, 1976, left lower lobectomy and thoracoplasty were performed at a hospital to treat long standing lung abscess, after operation it developed into empyema. One year later [April, 1977], We did decortication and left upper lobectomy[ultimate pneumonectomy], which was followed by empyema again, 3 months later it developed esophagopleurocutaneous fistula. Esophagograms bowed an adult thumb tip sized traction diverticulum in the midportion of the esophagus. Finally in January, 1978, after 6 months of gastrostomy feeding, fistulectomy and diverticulectomy were performed The funnel shaped diverticulum was in midesophagus and retracted by surrounding inflammatory scar tissue. Now the postoperative course was uneventful.
