Objectives : This study presents a scientific basis for the establishment of an environmental health contingency plan for dealing with accidental coastal oil spills and suggests some strategies for use in an environmental health emergency. Methods : We reviewed the existing literature, and analyzed the various fundamental factors involved in response strategies for oil spill. Our analysis included data derived from Hebei Spirit oil spill and used air dispersion modeling. Results : Spill amounts of more than 1,000 kl can affect the health of residents along the coast, especially those who belong to vulnerable groups. Almost 30% of South Korean population lives in the vicinity of the coast. The area that is at the highest risk for a spill and that has the greatest number of people at risk is the stretch of coastline from Busan to Tongyeong. The most prevalent types of oil spilt in Korean waters have been crude oil and bunker-C oil, both of which have relatively high specific gravity and contain volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and metals. In the case of a spill of more than 1,000 kl, it may be necessary to evacuate vulnerable and sensitive groups. Conclusions : The government should establish environmental health planning that considers the spill amount, the types of oil, and the distance between the spot of the accident and the coast, and should assemble a response team that includes environmental health specialists to prepare for the future oil spill.

In order to provide fundamental data for the creation of environmental design criteria for horticultural facilities, we developed a method to easily calculate the seasonal heating load applying heating degree-hour while taking into account heating load reductions due to solar radiation in the daytime, and reviewed through greenhouse heating experiments. Heating experiments and measuring meteorological environments were carried out in three greenhouses located at Buyeo, Cheonan, and Buan, and we derived reduction factors of seasonal heating load according to hours of sunshine. Daily mean hours of sunshine during the experiment period in each of the greenhouse was 4.0 to 8.3 hours, and the reduction factor of seasonal heating load was 0.64 to 0.85, has been shown to decrease linearly with the increase in hours of sunshine. A method to estimate the seasonal heating load for greenhouses was developed using the reduction factor of seasonal heating load derived from the greenhouse heating experiment, including the adjustment factor of seasonal heating load according to hours of sunshine. The developed method was validated through heating experiments in a greenhouse located at Cheonan. Greenhouse seasonal heating loads calculated by the method developed in this study were analyzed to show the estimate error of 1.2 to 5.0%. It showed that the accuracy increased 2.3 times more than when using the heating load reduction factor of 0.75 applied uniformly in previous studies. Thus, the calculation method of seasonal heating load for greenhouses considering hours of sunshine developed in this study could be utilized for energy estimation, management planning, and economic evaluation in greenhouse design.
There has been a significant decline in the number of rail accidents in Korea since system safety management activities were introduced. Nonetheless, analyzing and preventing human error-related accidents is still an important issue in railway industry. As a railway system is increasingly automated and intelligent, the mechanism and process of an accident occurrence are more and more complicated. It is now essential to consider a variety of factors and their intricate interactions in the analysis of rail accidents. However, it has proved that traditional accident models and methods based on a linear cause-effect relationship are inadequate to analyze and to assess accidents in complex systems such as railway systems. In order to supplement the limitations of traditional safety methods, recently some systemic safety models and methods have been developed. Of those, FRAM(Functional Resonance Analysis Method) has been recognized as one of the most useful methods for analyzing accidents in complex systems. It reflects the concepts of performance adjustment and performance variability in a system, which are fundamental to understanding the processes of an accident in complex systems. This study aims to apply FRAM to the analysis of a rail accident involving human errors, which occurred recently in South Korea. Through the application of FRAM, we found that it can be a useful alternative to traditional methods in the analysis and assessment of accidents in complex systems. In addition, it was also found that FRAM can help analysts understand the interactions between functional elements of a system in a systematic manner.
PURPOSES : In this paper, the applicability of DEM to a coarse graining method was evaluated by simulating a series of minicone tests for cement paste. METHODS : First, the fundamental physical quantities that are used in a static liquid bridge model were presented with three basic quantities based on the similarity principle and coarse graining method. Then, the scale factors and surface tensions for six different sizes of particles were determined using the relationship between the physical quantities and the basic quantities. Finally, the determined surface tensions and radii were utilized to simulate the fluidal behavior of cement paste under a minicone test condition, and the final shape of the cement paste with reference DEM particle radii was compared with the final shape of the others. RESULTS : The simulations with adjusted surface tensions for five different radii of particles and surface tension showed acceptable agreement with the simulation with regard to the reference size of the particle, although disagreement increases as the sizes of the particle radii increase. It seems reasonable to increase the particle radii by at least 0.196 cm considering the computational time reduction of 162 min. CONCLUSIONS : The coarse graining method based on the similarity principle is applicable for simulating the behavior of fluidal materials when the behavior of the materials can be described by a static liquid bridge model. However, the maximum particle radius should be suggested by considering not only the scale factor but also the relationship of the particle size and number with the radius of the curve of the boundary geometry.
Phylogeographic and feeding ecological studies of seven terrestrial mustelid species (Carnivora, Mustelidae), the Japanese marten Martes melampus, the sable Martes zibellina, the Japanese badger Meles anakuma, the ermine or the stoat Mustela erminea, the Japanese weasel Mustela itatsi, the least weasel Mustela nivalis, and the Siberian weasel Mustela sibirica, representing four biogeographic patterns in the Japanese archipelagos (Hokkaido, Honshu-Shikoku-Kyushu, Tsushima, and Hokkaido-Honshu), were reviewed in order to clarify causes for the faunal assemblage processes of those mustelid species in Japan. Here, three main constraints were extracted as important factors on the mustelid assemblage. First, fundamental evolutionary differences maintained by niche conservatism in each ecologically diversified lineage ("evolutionary constraint") would enable the species to co-occur without any major problem (coexistence among Martes, Meles, and Mustela species). Second, "ecological constraints" would force two closely related species to be allopatric by competitive exclusion (Mu. itatsi and Mu. sibirica) or to be sympatric by resource partitions (Mu. erminea and Mu. nivalis). Third and most importantly, "geological constraints" would allow specific species to be embraced by a particular geographic region, primarily deciding which species co-occurs. The allopatric distribution of two Martes species in Japan would have been established by the strong effect of the geological separation in Tsugaru Strait. Elucidating both phylogeny and ecology of co-existing species in a community assemblage is important to know which species possess distinct lineage and which ecological traits are adapted to local environments, fulfilling the requirement of the field of conservation biology that endemism and adaptation should both be considered. The Japanese archipelagos would, therefore, provide valuable insight into the conservation for small carnivoran species.

In order to understand the characteristics of natural droughts, it is very important to interpret the spatio-temporal relationship between different types of droughts. In this study, meteorological and hydrological drought events were defined to account for the overlap between drought duration and spatial extent in three dimensions (i.e., latitude, longitude, and timing). In other words, the spatio-temporal drought propagation characteristics were analyzed based on the drought characteristic factors (duration, area, depth, center). The drought map considering the characteristics of spatio-temporal drought propagation can be used to find the fundamental cause of the hydrological drought which is expected to frequently occur in the future. In addition, the drought map is expected to be useful in preparing an effective drought response plan.
The primary purposes of this study were to investigate how sixth graders would react to the types of tasks with regard to the comprehension of graphs and what differences might be among the kinds of graphs, and to raise issues about instructional methods of graphs. A descriptive study through pencil-and-paper tests was conducted. The tests consisted of 48 questions with 4 types of tasks (reading the data, reading between the data, reading beyond the data, and understanding the situations) and 6 kinds of graphs. The conclusions drawn from the results obtained in this study were as follows: First, it is necessary to foster the ability of interpreting the data and understanding the situation in graphs as well as that of reading the data and finding out the relationships in the data. Second, it is informative for teachers to know students' difficulties and thinking processes. Third, in order to develop understanding of graphs, it is important that students solve different types of tasks beyond simple question-answer tasks. Fourth, teachers need to pay attention to teach fundamental factors such as reading the data with regard to line graphs and stem-and-leaf plots Finally, graph type and task type interact to determine graph-comprehension performance. Therefore, both learning all kinds of graphs and being familiar with multiple types of tasks are important.
The purpose of this study is to analyse the successful modernization strategy, and the difference between original Burberry and Burberry Prosum design. This will help in providing the fundamental information to Korean luxury fashion brands. Burberry, in particular, is rated as the most popular luxury brand in Korean fashion market. This brand has also rated 5th in sale worldwide and 1st in Korea in 2002, and was continuously been rated in 10th for the last 5 years. Related articles, fashion magazines, fashion web-site were used in this analysis, and the method was theoretical and case study. The results are divided into two categories of internal and external factors and two design patterns of check pattern and trench coat were observed. First of all, internal factor in Burberry is that they have scouted a new CEO and quickly changed their image with famous British models for the purpose of marketing strategies. They have also moved their main shop in London to Bond street, and opened shops in every country's capital cities. They were successful in achieving this by using celebrity marketing strategies with many famous celebrities. Secondly, external factor was that they have hired a designer named Christoper Bailey and this highlighted and enhanced the check pattern and trench coat. As a results, more generalized and diverse design items were presented and accessory line was enhanced, creating a much more younger image. This in turn attracted more younger customers. To sum up, original Burberry focused on classic designs, however Burberry Prosum focused on transforming traditional Burberry design into avant-garde and young. In other words, the reason for the success of this brand is highly dependent on its marketing strategies in which its uniqueness of schizophrenic cloche has appropriately represented and used in design.
The spectrum sensing is one of the fundamental functions to realize the cognitive radios. One of problems in the spectrum sensing is that the performance of spectrum sensing can be degraded due to fading and shadowing. In order to overcome the problem, cooperative spectrum sensing method is proposed, which uses a distributed detection model and can increase sensing performance. However, the performance of cooperative spectrum sensing can be still affected by the interference factors such as obstacle and malicious user. Especially, most of cooperative spectrum sensing methods only considered the stationary primary user. In the ubiquitous environment, however the mobile primary users should be considered. In order to overcome the aforementioned problem, in this paper we propose a robust spectrum detection method based on localization where we estimate the location of the mobile primary user, and then based on the location and transmission range of primary user we detect interference users if there are, and then the local sensing reporting from detected interference users are excluded in the decision fusion process. Through simulation, it is shown that the sensing performance of the proposed scheme is more accurate than that of conventional other schemes
The aim of this study is to provide the fundamental information on satisfaction for school food service and dietary habits of middle school students in Sejong Special Self-Governing City. Generally, the subjects had a high satisfaction level for school food service. The boys had comparatively more satisfactory days for school food service than the girls. The most dissatisfactory factors of school food service were the taste and variety of menu for the girls, and the time and place for lunch and the service of employee for the boys. The intersexual differences existed with a significant difference in the irregular intake of meals, the reasons to skip meals, and the eating speed. For the boys, the main reason to skip meals was due to lack of appetite, and for the girls, it was the weight-control. The boys finished each meal within 5~10 min and ate more than the amount the girls eat in general. The main components of breakfast for the subjects were a cooked rice, soup, and side dish in 65.9%, and the frequency of skipping breakfast was high with 32.8%, which was once per week. The favorite snacks for the middle school students were cookies and beverages in 29.4%, instant foods in 24.3%, and hamburger and pizza in 21.4%. The intake frequency of snacks was once or twice per week in 46.5% of the subjects. In addition, the subjects had a very high intake frequency of fastfoods with once or twice per week in 72.7%, and the most favorite fastfood was ramen in 57.7%. The subjects in 45.3% took dairy food every day. In conclusion, the middle school students need nutrition education to improve their eating habit and to increase the frequency of breakfast.
