  • According to shrinkage of transistor, interface traps have been recognized as a major factor which limits the process development in manufacturing industry. The traps occur through spontaneous generation process, and spread into the forbidden band. There is a large change of current though a few traps are existed at the Si-SiO2 interface. Moreover, the increased temperature largely affects to the leakage current due to the interface trap. For this reason, we made an effort to find out the relationship between temperature and interface trap. The subthreshold swing (SS) was investigated to confirm the correlation. The simulated results show that the sphere of influence of trap is enlarged according to increase in temperature. To investigate the relationship between thermal energy and surface potential, we extracted the average surface potential and thermal energy (kT) according to the temperature. Despite an error rate of 6.5%, change rates of both thermal energy and average surface potential resemble each other in many ways. This allows that SS is affected by the trap within the range of the thermal energy from the surface energy.

  • In this study, activated carbons (ACs) were modified as electrode materials for an electric double layer capacitor (EDLC) by controlling oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups. The morphological and chemical properties of ACs were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, automatic elemental analyzer (EA) and Boehm titration. Also, charge/discharge tests were performed to investigate the EDLC performance. Oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups were introduced on the surface of ACs through acid and urea treatments, respectively. ACs with nitrogen-containing functional groups showed 2 mA increase of gravimetric discharge capacity and quick achievement of maximum charge/discharge performance. However, ACs with oxygen-containing functional groups showed low discharge capacity and its gradual decrease during further cyclic test, since the functional groups interrupted adsorption/desorption of charges in the electrolyte on the surface of ACs.

  • RGDF immobilized micro-patterned surface was developed to detect the functional state of platelets. Using photolithographic technology, an RGDF micro-patterned surface was prepared on silicon wafer. Platelet adhesion to this surface was observed by fluorescence microscopy after staining platelets with mepacrine. Nonactivated platelets pretreated with $PGE_1$ interacted incompletely with the RGDF micro-patterned surface, whereas activated platelets treated with ADP interacted with the surface extensively. These results show that the distinct selectivity of an RGDF-immobilized micro-patterned surface can be used to detect the functional state of platelets.

  • Activated carbon fiber (ACF) was surface modified by nitric acid to improve the adsorption efficiency of the propylamine. The adsorption amount of propylamine of the modified ACF increased $17\%$ more than that of as-received ACF. Desorption of propylamine from the propylamine saturated ACF was occurred in two steps, the first step started arround $50^{\circ}C$ showing the desorption of physically adsorbed propylamine and the second step started at $200^{\circ}C$ showing the decomposition of chemically adsorbed propylamine. Total desorption amount of propylamine from the modified ACF was larger than that of the as-received ACF because of increased functional groups. The oxygen and nitrogen contents on the modified ACF increased by 1.5 and 3 times compared with the as-received ACF. A part of propylamine adsorbed on ACF formed pyridine-like or pyrrolic structures with 2 carbons exposed on the surface of the ACF. It was found that propylamine reacted with strong or weak acidic functional groups such as -COOH or -OH existed on ACF surface.

  • In order to give pulp surfaces anti-bacterial functionality and photo-catalytic deodorant ability, functional pulps was made using a surface modification method with Ag nano-colloidal solution and $TiO_2$ filler. Hygiene paper was made with the specially modified pulp, and anti-bacterial and deodorant tests were carried out. The Ag nano-colloidal solution was coated on the surface of the pulp using the high pressurized gas phase squirt through the spray nozzle mounted on the hybridization system. The surface modified functional pulp was hybridized with the optimum ratio of $TiO_2$(fine particle) to pulp(core particle) under the condition of $6,000{\sim}10,000$ rpm for $3{\sim}7$ minutes in the system. The anti-bacterial functionality of the hygiene paper was confirmed by the halo test in which the formation of the clear zone around the hygiene paper sample was observed. The inhibition growth test using MIC bioscreen C showed the inhibition growth effect of the bacteria as the reaction time was increased. The photo-catalytic effect measurement of the $TiO_2$ for 4 hours of the reaction showed $50{\sim}60%$ of decomposition rate, reaching over 60% for 5 hours of the reaction.

  • Surface modified carbon felts were utilized as an electrode for the removal of inorganic ions from seawater. The surfaces of the carbon felts were chemically modified by alkaline and acidic solutions, respectively. The potassium hydroxide (KOH) modified carbon felt exhibited high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas and large pore volume, and oxygen-containing functional groups were increased during KOH chemical modification. However, the BET surface area significantly decreased by nitric acid ($HNO_3$) chemical modification due to severe chemical dissolution of the pore structure. The capability of electrosorption by an electrical double-layer and the efficiency of capacitive deionization (CDI) thus showed the greatest enhancement by chemical KOH modification due to the appropriate increase of carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups and the enlargement of the specific surface area.

  • Electrode surface reaction on glassy carbon and synthesized graphite (PVDF mixed graphite) in sulfuric acid solution is investigated by impedance spectroscopy at cyclic polarization. The redox peak, which may be due to the change of chemical adsorped functional group on electrode surface or oxidation and reduction of oxygen, is represented on glassy carbon and graphite electrode in potentio-dynamic current curve. The oxidation and reduction of these surface functional group on glassy carbon and PVDF mixed graphite have a major affect on the impedance spectrum and Faraday impedance parameter at cyclic polarization.

  • In this study, the polycarbonate surface was treated by $O_2$/ Ar gases plasma for the enhancement of adhesion with Cu electrode. From the point of view of hydrophilicity and the functionality, the micro-roughness, new functional groups and oxygen content of the polycarbonate surface were increased by the $O_2$/ Ar gases plasma treatment. The Cu films deposited on the as-received polycarbonate were easily detached while, after the$ O_2$/ Ar gases plasma treatment the adhesive Cu films on polycarbonate could be obtained. These results can be explained that the polycarbonate had a hydrophilic surface with uniform micro-roughness and new functional groups by $O_2$/ Ar gases plasma treatment. Therefore,$O_2$/ Ar gases plasma treatment is a promising method for improvement of adhesion between polycarbonate and Cu electrode.

  • We search for an appropriate initial adsorption coordination of precursor on surface by using genetic algorithm (GA) and density functional theory. SiH4 and Al(CH3)3 as precursor, and OH-terminated Si (001) as surface are used for this study. Selection, crossover, and mutation as hyperparameters of GA are applied to search for the adsorption coordination of the precursors on the surface as a function of generation. Bond distances between precursors and the surface are used to explain the adsorption behavior of the precursors.

  • We investigated the effect of chemical acid treatments on hydrogen storage behaviors of the ordered mesoporous carbons (MCs). The surface functional groups and specific elements of the MCs were characterized with Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Also, the changes in the surface functional groups of the MCs were quantitatively detected by Boehm's titration method. The structural properties of the MCs were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The hydrogen adsorption capacity of the MCs was evaluated by means of adsorption isotherms at 77 K/1 bar. The formation of surface functional groups by the acidic treatments could influence on the hydrogen storage capacity of the MCs.
