The early-phase naval ship design demands requirements synthesis rather than design synthesis, which conducts engineering design for several domains on a detailed level. Requirements synthesis focuses on creating a balanced set of required operational capabilities satisfying user's needs and concept of operations. Requirements are evolved from capability based languages to function based language by statistical exploration and engineering design which are derived in the following order: concept alternative, concept baseline, initial baseline and functional baseline. The early-phase naval ship design process can be divided into three passes: concept definition, concept exploration and concept development. Main activities and outcomes in each pass are shortly presented. Concept definition is the first important step that produces a concept baseline through extensive design space exploration promptly. Design space exploration applies a statistical approach to explore design trends of existing ships and produce feasible design range corresponding to concept alternative. It further helps naval systems engineers and operational researchers by inducing useful responses to user and stakeholders' questions at a sufficient degree of confidence and success in the very early ship design. The focus of this paper is on the flow of design space exploration, and its application to a high-speed patrol craft. The views expressed in this paper are those of the authors, and do not reflect the official policy or rule of the Navy.
Recently, the evolution in production techniques (e.g. high-speed milling), the complex shapes involved in modem production design, and the ever increasing pressure for higher productivity demand a drastic improvement of the dynamic behavior of the machine tool axes used in production machinery. And also machine tools of multi functional and minimized parts are increasingly required as demand of higher accurate in some fields such as electronic and optical components etc. The accuracy and the productivity of machined parts are natural to depend on the linear system of machine tools. The complex workpiece surfaces encountered in present-day products and generated by CAD systems are to be transformed into tool paths for machine tools. The more complex these tool paths and the higher the speed requirements, the higher the acceleration requirements are needed to the machine tool axes and the motion control system, and the more difficult it is to meet the requirements. The traditional indirect drive design for high speed machine tools, which consists of a rotary motor with a ball-screw transmission to the slide, is limited in speed, acceleration, and accuracy. The direct drive design of machine tool axes. which is based on linear motors and which recently appeared on the market. is a viable candidate to meet the ever increasing demands, because of these advantages such as no backlash, less friction, no mechanical limitations on acceleration and velocity and mechanical simplicity. Therefore performance tests were carried out to machine tool axes based on linear motor. Especially, dynamic characteristics were investigated through circular test.

Production planning is a key part of production management of manufacturing enterprises. Since computerization began, modern production planning has been developed starting with Material Requirement Planning (MRP), and today Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS), Supply Chain Management (SCM) has been spreading and advanced. However, in the shipbuilding field, rather than applying these general-purpose production planning methodologies, in most cases, each shipyard has developed its own production planning system. This is because the applications of general-purpose production planning methods are limited due to the order-taking industry such as shipbuilding with highly complicated construction process consisting of millions of parts per ship. This study introduces the design and development of the production planning system reflecting the production environment of heavy shipyards in Korea. Since Korean shipyards such as Hyundai, Daewoo and Samsung build more than 10 ships per year (50-70 ships in the case of large shipyards), a planning system for the mixed production with complex construction processes is required. This study draws requirements using PI/BPR (process innovation and business process reengineering) methodology to develop a production planning system for shipyards that simultaneously build several ships. Then, CBD software development methodology was applied for the design and implementation of planning system with drawn requirements. It is expected that the systematic development procedure as well as the requirements and functional elements for the development of the shipyard production planning system introduced in this study will be able to present important guidelines in the related research field of shipbuilding management.
In recent years considerable progress has been made in the characterisation of surface finish in three dimensions, and in the development of protocols which can be used for international standardisation. Although the subject as it has currently developed has much further to go if the process of surface characterisation is to impact on manufacture, control and specification of the manufacturing process itself. Researchers in this important area are beginning to realise that if the subject is to have great impact on manufacturing industries, surface characterisation must be broadened to include measures of surface integrity of the component and in addition be related to the functional demands imposed on the surface. The functional demands being a requirement of the engineering situation in which the components are employed. If these three factors are considered simultaneously, surface characterisation, surface integrity and component function, then a new and important subject is born, the subject of the Engineered Surface. Part 1 of this paper attempts to draw together the elements which go together to create the subject, 'The Engineered Surface'. The paper presents a method by which this important subject can be developed to the benefit of manufacturing industries. The paper also discusses the importance of a co-ordinated approach to the subject and the way that information can be documented to eventually provide a useful atlas of controlling parameters which are essential for a range of material processing industries as they strive to meet the ever more stringent and cost effective requirements of the manufacture.
To meet the growing needs from a variety of stakeholders, the development of modern systems is getting more complex and thus, the systems failure in the actual operations can potentially become more serious. This is why several international or military standards on systems safety have been published. In spite of the importance of meeting those standards such as IEC 61508 and ISO 26262 in the systems development, the associated practical methods seem deficient since those standards do not provide them. The objective of this paper is to present a method to identify potential hazards in fulfilling the requirements of the safety standards. In particular, the approach taken here is based on applying the functional analysis that covers several levels of the system under development. Note, however, that in the most of the conventional methods for hazards identification, the analysis has been focused on the failure at or underneath the component level of the system. The hazards identification method in this paper would cover the level up to the system by utilizing the functions-oriented approach. The case study of the safety enhancement for locomotive cabs is also discussed.
