Three phosphorus functional groups were introduced in one structural unit of polymer backbone to enhance the flame retardancy of PU coatings. In the first step, we synthesized tetramethylene bis(orthophosphate) (TBOP) that contained two phosphorus functional groups in one structural unit. In the next step, we synthesized modified polyesters (ATBTP-10C, -20C, -30C) that contained triphosphorus group using TBOP, 1,4-butanediol, trimethylolpropane, adipic acid, and another functional monomer, phenylphosphonic acid (PPA). The amount of PPA in ATBTPs was adjusted from 10 wt% to 30 wt%. The structure and characteristics of ATBTPs were examined using FT-IR, NMR, GPC, and TGA analysis. From the thermo-behavior test of diphosphorus modified polyester (ATBT) and ATBTPs, the afterglow of ATBT, ATBTP-10C, ATBTP-20C, and ATBTP-30C were 24.7, 27.1, 29.0, and 31.7%, respectively. It was found from this result that the afterglow increased with the amount of PPA component.
The thermal properties of wood flour, Hwangto, and maleated polyethylene (MAPE) reinforced HDPE composites were investigated in this study. The thermal behavior of reinforced wood polymer composites was characterized by means of thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analyses. Hwangto and MAPE were used as an inorganic filler and a coupling agent, respectively. According to TGA analysis, the increase of wood flour level increased the thermal degradation of composites in the early stage, but decreased in the late stage. On the other hand, Hwangto reinforced composites showed the higher thermal stability than virgin HDPE, from the determination of differential peak temperature ($DT_p$). Decomposition temperature of wood flour and/or Hwangto reinforced composites increased with increase of heating rate. From DSC analysis, melting temperature of reinforced composites little bit increased with the addition of wood flour or Hwangto. As the loading of wood flour or Hwangto to HDPE increased, overall enthalpy decreased. It showed that wood flour and Hwangto absorbed more heat energy for melting the reinforced composites. Hwangto reinforced composites required more heat energy than wood flour reinforced composites and virgin HDPE. Coupling agent gave no significant effect on the thermal properties of composites. Thermal analyses indicate that composites with Hwangto are more thermally stable than those without Hwangto.
The present study suggests a novel method to produce raspberry-like microparticles containing diverse functional materials inside. The raspberry-like microparticles were produced from a random assembly of uniformly-sized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanoparticles via electrospraying. The solution containing the PMMA nanoparticles were supplied through the inner nozzle and compressed air was emitted through the outer nozzle. The air supply helped fast evaporation of acetone, so it enabled copious amount of microparticles as dry powder. The microparticles were highly porous both on the surface and interiors, hence various materials with a function of UV-blocking ($TiO_2$ nanoparticles and methoxyphenyl triazine) or anti-aging (ethyl(4-(2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-5-carboxyamido) benzoate)) were loaded in large amount (17 wt % versus PMMA). The surface and interior structures of the microparticles were dependent on the characteristics of functional materials. The results clearly suggest that the process to prepare the raspberry-like microparticles can be an excellent approach to generate functional microstructures.

To prepare a solution type acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive, quarter polymers were synthesized from butyl acrylate(BA), 2-ethylhexylacrylate(2-EHA) as a base monomer, methyl methacrylate(MMA) as a comonomer, each of methacrylic acid(MAA), acrylic acid(AA) as a functional monomer. Acrylic solution type pressure-sensitive adhesives(PSA's) of isocyanate derivative crosslinking PSA's were prepared by crosslinking of BEMM, BEMA with toluene-2,4-diisocyanate. The structure of adhesive was identified by FT-IR. The viscosity was measured by using Brookfield DV-III and molecular weight was measured by using gel permeation chromatography. The physical properties of polyethylene film coated with BEMMT, BEMAT were measured as a function of the concentration. As the result, BEMMT(0.6, 0.8), BEMAT(0.6) showed peel adhesion of $160{\sim}180\;g_f$/25 mm width and shear adhesion of more than 24 hours, and tackiness of $4/32{\sim}6/32$ which was relevant to commercial usage.
Surface modified carbon felts were utilized as an electrode for the removal of inorganic ions from seawater. The surfaces of the carbon felts were chemically modified by alkaline and acidic solutions, respectively. The potassium hydroxide (KOH) modified carbon felt exhibited high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas and large pore volume, and oxygen-containing functional groups were increased during KOH chemical modification. However, the BET surface area significantly decreased by nitric acid ($HNO_3$) chemical modification due to severe chemical dissolution of the pore structure. The capability of electrosorption by an electrical double-layer and the efficiency of capacitive deionization (CDI) thus showed the greatest enhancement by chemical KOH modification due to the appropriate increase of carboxyl and hydroxyl functional groups and the enlargement of the specific surface area.

Composite membranes of Nafion and sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) were prepared. Sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s with different degrees of sulfonation were blended with Nafion to reduce the methanol crossover. The morphology, proton conductivity and methanol permeability of the resulting composite membranes were investigated by SEM, EDAX, AC impedance spectroscopy and permeability measuring instrument. The crosssections of the composite membranes showed a phase separated morphology. The morphology and phase separation mechanism could be controlled by varying the blend ratio and the degree of sulfonation of poly(arylene ether sulfone). These complex morphologies can be applied for reducing methanol crossover. The methanol permeability and proton conductivity of the composite membranes were lower than those of Nafion 117 membrane since the development of an ionic pathway in the blend membrane was more difficult than that in Nafion itself.
Based on the sheath-core bicomponent composite fibers with modified polystyrene (PS) and the modified polypropylene (PP), composite fibers obtained were further cross-linked and sulphonated with chlorosulphonic acid to produce strong acidic cation ion exchange fibers. The structures of the fibers obtained were characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) etc. The optimal technology of the fibers obtained is discussed. The static absorption capacity of the sheath-core bicomponent composite cation exchange fibers for $Zn^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ was determined. The absorption kinetics and major factors affecting the absorption capacities of $Zn^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$ were studied, and its chemical stability and regenerating properties were probed. The results suggest that cation exchange fibers with better mechanical properties and higher exchange capability were obtained. Moreover, this type of ion exchange fiber has good absorption properties and working stability to various metal ions. Hence, they have higher practicability.
Nanofood can be simply defined as natural polymer particles containing functional food materials in nanoscale that are synthesized by polymerization or emulsification process. They have very uniform diameters in the range of 1 to 100nm and extensive surface areas due to the small particle size in spite of their non-porosity. Although the technique to produce nanofood has not long developing history, many works have been achieved in various fields. Nanofood has a lot of special advantages, such as functionality, diversity, applicability, etc. In case of the domestic food industries, however, the accumulation of related technique is insufficient against developed countries except used food materials. Also, it is difficult to acquire technical know-how from the developed countries that possess those technologies. We have been studied on preparing functional nanofood and developing new production processes since 1999. Last 5 years we have laid the foundation on the preparation of nanofood and now are focusing on developing new processes of nanofood and expending the field of its applications.

Recently, as industries and technologies are increased, superior adhesives having more and more developed functions and properties have been demanded. In this article, to use the merits and viscoelastic properties of poly(ethylene/butylene) rubber resin and to supplement the demerits, semi-structure pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are developed. Aslo, it can be said environmentally friendly PSAs because of not use the organic solvent and not emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Relationship between printability and rheological properties of UV flexographic (flexo) inks were investigated. UV flexo suspensions of carbon black in liquid medium having various binding materials such as acylate pre-polymer, di/multi-functional monomer, and diluents, were used as sample inks. Inks were characterized on a rheometer in terms of steady and dynamic behaviors. To understand the rheological properties of UV flexo inks, we must determine the specific rheological properties of chemical and/or physical interactions of their components (pigments, functional monomers, and pre-polymers). In particular, we discussed the influence of multi-functional monomers and the relationship between the rheological properties and transient networks formed by carbon black. In this study, we investigated the interrelationships between rheological properties of UV flexo inks and chemical and/or physical interactions of their components. To investigate correlations between the printability and the rheological behaviors induced by interfacial interactions between ink compositions, we carried out rheological tests of UV ink suspensions. The results were compared with printing tests so as to find out the relationship between printability and rheological properties of ink.
