Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has been widely used in bioconjugation as it is an efficient and facile method to prepare polymers with pre-designed structures. Quite often, bioconjugation with proteins employs primary amines in proteins as a functional group to attach an initiator. When 2-bromoisobutryl bromide, the most widely used precursor for ATRP initiator, is used, ${\alpha}-halo$ amide initiating groups are formed in the proteins, which are known to exhibit slow initiation behavior in the ATRP process. Here we studied the ATRP of [poly(ethylene glycol)methyl ether] methacrylate (PEGMA) using amide-based initiator. PEGMA differs for both the nature and size of the polymer side branches and shows good solubility in water and a property that made it an ideal candidate for biomaterials. While normal ATRP produced ill-defined p(PEGMA) with amide based initiators, the halogen exchange method and the external additional of deactivator effectively improved the control of ATRP of PEGMA.
Polystyrene/carbon nanotube (CNT) microcellular foams were prepared to have electrically conductive properties via high internal phase emulsion polymerization. In this study, we have investigated the effects of surface modification of CNT, surfactant content and dispersion time to improve the stability of emulsion and the electrical conductivity of foam. Acid treatment and a surfactant were used to effectively disperse CNTs in the aqueous phase. In the organic phase, CNTs were used after a surface modification with organic functional groups. The degree of dispersion of CNTs was estimated by the electrical conductivity of resultant microcellular foams. With raw CNTs dispersed with the surfactant in the aqueous phase, substantial conductivity increase was observed but the foams were slightly shrunk. The foams prepared with organically modified CNTs dispersed in the organic phase showed stable cell morphology without shrinkage, but displayed limitation to improve the conductivity.
To improve hydrolytic stability of polyurethane (PU) adhesives, a silane coupling agent (SCA) was added. 3-Isocyanatopropyl triethoxy silane (ITS) as a SCA has two functional groups in the main chain and it is used to improve an interfacial interaction between polymer and inorganic material or metal. In this study, PU adhesives with different amounts of ITS from 0 to 1 wt% were synthesized. Pot time, modulus, thermal stablilty, and adhesive force of the obtained samples were measured. The results showed that the adhesives with ITS showed better properties than that of pure one.

The wetting property of polymer surfaces is very important for practical applications. Plasma source ion implantation technique was used to improve the wetting properties of polymer surfaces. Poly(ethylene terephtalate) and other polymer sheets were mounted on the target stage and an RF plasma was generated by means of an antenna located inside the vacuum chamber. High voltage pulses of up to -10kV, 10 $\mu$sec, and up to 1 kHz were applied to the stage. The samples were implanted for 5 minutes with using Ar, $N_2,O_2,CH_4,CF_4$ and their mixture as source gases. A contact angle meter was used to measure the water contact angles of the implanted samples and of the samples stored in ambient conditions after implantation. The modified surfaces were analysed with Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (TOF-SIMS) and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES). The oxygen-implanted samples showed extremely low water contact angles of $3^{\circ}C$ compared to $79^{\circ}C$ of unimplanted ones. Furthermore, the modified surfaces were relatively stable with respect to aging in ambient conditions, which is one of the major concerns of the other surface treatment techniques. From TOF-SIMS analysis it was found that oxygen-containing functional groups had been formed on the implanted surfaces. On the other hand, the $CF_4$-implanted samples turned out to be more hydro-phobic than unimplanted ones, giving water contact angles exceeding $100^{\circ}C$ . The experiment showed that plasma source ion implantation is a very promising technique for polymer surface modification especially for large area treatment.

Electrospinning has recently been used for micropatterning. The electrospinning method as a patterning tool has the advantage of a rapid patterning speed because it is based on a continuous printing mode rather than a drop-on-demand mode. To obtain stable continuous printing, a high molecular weight polymer must be mixed with functional materials for patterning. In this paper, polyethylene oxide (PEO) was used. The effect of polymer on viscosity and formation of a Taylor cone jet from the electrospinning nozzle was investigated. Finally, the electrospinning patterning results of a silver paste ink on a glass substrate were investigated.
The feasibility of recycling wasted printed circuit board (PCB) is investigated by preparing PCB added flame retardant composites filled with either unsaturated polyester or polyurethane. In order to improve electroconductive properties, copper powder was added into the composites, which results also in improving their antistatic properties. The prepared composite samples showed a binding between the polymer fillers observed by a scanning microscope. The sample group using unsaturated polyester is elastomeric that led to appreciable elongation and elasticity. In case of polyurethane, the tensile strength increased proportionally as increase of the amount of PCB powder. The composite materials can be utilized as antistatic composite materials, since the surface resistivity result showed increase of the electroconductive properties by adding Cu. The flammability of the samples is not satisfactory according to UL-94 vertical test. However, the flame retardant properties were improved by adding PCB power. This study, therefore, showed that it is feasible to fabricate polymer composite materials and improve the material characteristics by adding PCB powder, which can replace existing additives used for the preparation of polymer composite materials and can reduce the environment contamination by recycling the wasted PCB.
This research was made to manufacture the fabric for interior uses by spinning a low melting mono 4 denier PET staple fiber with a soluble 1.4 denier fine PET fiber. The blended yarn has a thickness ranging from 10's to 14's, and the soluble PET fine fiber was dissolved to make a pore in the polymer. Thereby a snap property was decreased and a resilience property was improved to be suitable for a functional synthetic leather. In order to attain the optimum condition, a mechanical property according to fineness, and mixing ratio of low melting polymer, warp density, weft density and blending ratio, and a heat contraction ratio according to blending ratio were experimented. The warp density, 220 T/inch of fine denier PET and the weft density, 64 T/inch of thick denier PET were generated to 4/4 both twill weave fabric having constant tensile property and thickness.
Polymer thin films were prepared by radio frequency (RF) plasma polymerization of phthalic anhydride (PA). First, monomer vaporization temperature ($100{\sim}160^{\circ}C$) was optimized by evaluating the thermal properties of thin films using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and measuring the root-mean-square (RMS) roughness with atomic force microscope (AFM) at the fixed plasma power of 10 W and time of 5 min in a continuous-wave (CW) mode. Plasma power (5~20 W) was then optimized by measuring the film solubility in solvents such as toluene, acetone, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and 1 methylpyrrolidine (NMP). Next, pulsed mode plasma polymerization was also studied by varying the duty cycle of on-time (5, 20%) under optimized conditions of continuous-wave (CW) mode ($120^{\circ}C$, 10 W) in order to increase the anhydride functional groups. Finally, polymer thin films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and ${\alpha}$-step.
The morphology, dynamic mechanical behavior and fracture behavior of polyetherimide (PEI)/dicyanate semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) with a morphology spectrum were analyzed. To obtain the morphology spectrum, we disported PEI particles in the procured dicyanate resin containing 300 ppm of zinc stearate catalyst. The semi-IPNs exhibited a morphology spectrum, which consisted of nodular spinodal structure, dual-phase morphology, and sea-island type morphology, in the radial direction of each dispersed PEI particle due to the concentration gradient developed by restricted dissolution and diffusion of the PEI particles during the curing process of the dicyanate resin. Analysis of the dynamic mechanical data obtained by the semi-IPNs demonstrated that the transition of the PEI-rich phase was shifted toward higher temperature as well as becoming broader because of the gradient structure. The semi-IPNs with the morphology spectrum showed improved fracture energy of 0.3 kJ/$m^2$, which was 1.4 times that of the IPNS having sea-island type morphology. It was found that the partially introduced nodular structure played a crucial role in the enhancement of the fracture resistance of the semi-IPNs.
We propose a two-step UV irradiation procedure to fabricate polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films by lamination. During the first UV treatment, before lamination, the UV-curable monomers coated on one film substrate are solidified through photo-polymerization as the phase separation between the liquid crystals and the monomers. Introducing an adhesion-enhancement layer on the other plastic substrate and controlling the UV irradiation conditions ensure that UV-induced cross-linkable functional groups remain on the surfaces of the photo-polymerized layers. Thereby, the adhesion stability between the top and bottom films is much improved during a second (post-lamination) UV treatment by further UV-induced cross-linking at the interface. Because the adhesion-enhancement and PDLC layers prepared by the bar-coating process are solidified before lamination, the PDLC droplet distribution and the cell gap between the two plastic substrates remain uniform under the lamination pressure. This ensures that the voltage-controlled light transmittance is uniform across the entire sample.
