  • Engineering systems are usually repairable. The reliability of a repairable system can be represented by failure intensity function. A type of shape of failure intensity function is called a failure pattern. Reliability-Centred Maintenance (RCM) presents six typical failure patterns but its definition is unclear. It is an open issue how to recognize the failure pattern of repairable systems. This paper first discusses the problems of RCM with the notion of failure pattern; then presents the method for failure pattern recognition; and finally proposes a flexible failure intensity function model. The appropriateness of the model is illustrated by a real-world example.

  • In this paper, the problem for choosing design points in the two dimensional case is condidered. In the one dimensional case, given the design density function, we can choose design points using the quantile function. However, in the two dimensional case, there is no clear definition of the percentile. Therefore, the idea of choosing design points in the univariate case can not be applied directly to the two dimensional case. We convert this problem into an optimization problem using the Voronoi diagram.

  • The paper presents the analysis and results of traffic measurements in the 155 Mbit/s real working ATM backbone network. The traffic is described as an ordered sequence of real-time cells. In this paper we analyze two timescales in which some form of a stochastic process is taking place: cell scale and burst scale. We present another way to describe the cell flow in ATM networks by definition the function, designed to be the probability of the burst of length ∫in n sequential slots.

  • In 2006, S. Lin and W. Lin introduced the definition of weakly weighted-sharing of meromorphic functions which is between "CM" and "IM". In this paper, using the notion of weakly weighted-sharing, we study the uniqueness of nonconstant homogeneous differential polynomials P[f] and P[g] generated by meromorphic functions f and g, respectively. Our results generalize the results due to S. Lin and W. Lin, and H.-Y. Xu and Y. Hu.

  • We investigated an irrational constant e and compared its computational methods using spreadsheet. Such methods are based on classical definition, infinite series, continued fraction, infinite product exponential function and accelerated classical method. This kind of work is focused on experimental mathematics using computers in math class. This approach will be helpful for mathematics teachers to teach constant e in their classroom.

  • In this article, we discuss classes of generalized functions for certain modified integral operator of Bessel-type involving Fox's H-function kernel. We employ a known differentiation formula of Fox's H-function to obtain the definition and properties of the distributional modified Bessel-type integral. Further, we derive a smoothness theorem for its kernel in a complete countably multi-normed space. On the other hand, using an appropriate class of convolution products, we derive axioms and establish spaces of modified Boehmians which are generalized distributions. On the defined spaces, we introduce addition, convolution, differentiation and scalar multiplication and further properties of the extended integral.

  • This paper discusses the system layout of flexible manufacturing system. A definition of flexible manufacturing system has not been necessarily classified yet. An understanding, and an objective of its application are different in a variety of industries. It could be treated as the system adopting flexble-Automation and FMS has been improving as a form of parts maching system. It was thought that the problems of machining function and transfer function were important. This paper introduces parts family and machine groups to increase machining function and transfer function. Parts family and machine tool groups were made up by means of multidimensional dizitizing analysis. A new software algorithm for forming parts family and machine groups has been proposed. Flexible manufacturing system was layout according to the FMS transfer function classification.

  • To solve structural optimization problems, it is necessary to integrate a structural analysis package and an optimization package. There have been many packages that can be employed to analyze reinforced concrete plane frames. However, because most structural analysis packages suffer from closeness of systems, it is very difficult to integrate them with optimization packages. To overcome the difficulty, we proposed a possible alternative, DAMDO, which integrates Design, Analysis, Modeling, Definition, and Optimization phases into an integration environment as follows. (1) Design: first generate many possible structural design alternatives. Each design alternative consists of many design variables X. (2) Analysis: employ the structural analysis software to analyze all structural design alternatives to obtain their internal forces and displacements. They are the response variables Y. (3) Modeling: employ artificial neural networks to build the models Y=f(X) to obtain the relationship functions between the design variables X and the response variables Y. (4) Definition: employ the design variables X and the response variables Y to define the objective function and constraint functions. (5) Optimization: employ the optimization software to solve the optimization problem consisting of the objective function and the constraint functions to produce the optimum design variables. The RC frame optimization problem was examined to evaluate the DAMDO approach, and the empirical results showed that it can be solved by the approach.

  • This paper presents a new two-point approximation method based on the exponential intervening variable. To avoid the lack of definition of the conventional exponential intervening variables due to zero- or negative-valued design variables the shifting level into each exponential intervening variable is introduced. Then a new quadratic approximation, whose Hessian matrix has only diagonal elements of different values, is proposed in terms of these intervening variables. These diagonal elements are computed in a closed form, which correct the typical error in the approximate gradient of the TANA series due to the lack of definition of exponential type intervening variables and their incomplete second-order terms. Also, a correction coefficient is multiplied to the pre-determined quadratic term to match the value of approximate function with that of the original function at the previous point. Finally, the authors developed a sequential approximate optimizer, solved several typical design problems used in the literature and compared these optimization results with those of TANA-3. These comparisons show that the proposed method gives more efficient and reliable results than TANA-3.
