  • High pressure LPG fuel spray with a conventional swirl injector was visualized and the impact of the injection pressure was also investigated using a DISI (direct injection spark ignition) LPG single cylinder engine. Engine performance and emission characteristics were evaluated over three different injection pressure and engine loads at an engine speed of 1500 rpm. The fuel spray pattern appeared to notably have longer penetration length and narrower spray angle than those of gasoline due to its lower angular momentum and rapid vaporization. Fuel injection pressure did not affect combustion behaviors but for high injection pressure and low load condition ($P_{inj}$=120 bar and 2 bar IMEP), which was expected weak flow field configuration and low pressure inside the cylinder. In terms of nano particle formation the positions of peak values in particle size distributions were not also changed regardless of the injection pressure, and its number densities were dramatically reduced compared to those of gasoline.

  • This paper presents effect of nozzle hole number on atomization characteristic of DME fuel spray using three different type of injector having the hole number of 6, 7 and 8. For this study, PDPA(phase Doppler particle analyzer) experiment was performed in terms of $T_{ASOE}$ under various injection pressure. To compare general trend of atomization characteristic, the law data were ensemble averaged based on $T_{eng}$ of 0.2 ms. Results showed that the droplet diameter in terms of SMD(Sauter Mean Diameter) was reduced as increase in injection pressure. Increasing the number of hole lead to reduce in droplet diameter, but no significant reduction in diameter was observed between hole number of 7 and that of 8. In addition, increasing the number of hole resulted in decrease in droplet velocity which is considered as the effect of reduction in spray momentum due to decreasing of fuel quantity per each hole.

  • The sloshing tank causes the instability of the fluid flows and the fluctuation of the impact pressure by the liquid on the tank. These flow characteristics inside the sloshing tank can generate the uncomfortable sloshing noise. In the present study, a numerical analysis for the reduction of a fuel tank sloshing noise was performed. To simulate the flow characteristics in a sloshing tank with partially filled liquid, a VOF method was used for interfacial flows by applying a momentum source term for the sloshing motion in a non-inertial reference frame. This numerical method was verified by comparing its results with the available experimental data. For the reduction of the sloshing noise, the horizontal and vertical baffles and porous media inside a sloshing tank were considered and numerically analyzed in the present study. For various installations of these baffles and porous media, the characteristics of the liquid behavior in the sloshing tank were obtained along with the impact pressure on the wall and the height of the free surface along the wall. These basic results can be used for the design of the actual vehicular fuel tank with the reduced sloshing noise.

  • Satellite propulsion system is employed for orbit transfer, orbit correction, and attitude control. The monopropellant feeding system in the low-earth-orbit satellite blowdowns fuel to the thrust chamber. The thrust produced by the thruster depends on fuel amount flowed into the combustion chamber. If the thruster valve be given on-off signal from on-board commander in the satellite, valve will be opened or closed. When the thrusters fire fuel flows through opened thruster valve, instantaneous stoppage of flow in according to valve actuation produces transient pressure due to pressure wave. This paper describes transient pressure predictions of the KOMPSAT-2 propulsion system resulting from latching valve and thrust control valve operations. The time-dependent set of the fluid mass and momentum equations are calculated by MOC.

  • Spray and Mixing characteristics of the unlike impinging triplet injectors (F-O-F, O-F-O) were investigated with the variation of the momentum ratio of oxidizer to fuel. The spray pattern was measured using a backlit stroboscopic photography technique, and mixing efficiency was measured using a mechanical patternator. Kerosene/water were used as a propellant simulant. From the experimental results, it is found that a O-F-O type injector has a good atomization. And as the momentum ratio increases, the mixing efficiency decreases rapidly.

  • A new concept of a small thruster for altitude control of a micro/nano class satellite is developed, which utilizes the pulsed laser energy. As the laser-based thruster does not require burning of any fuel, it gives promise of small satellite design criteria, namely light weight and cost effectiveness. In this paper, we develop gel-type material for generating strong plasma plume for enhancing thrust for propulsion. Moreover, we quantify the level of thrust via the momentum coupling coefficient measured by the pendulum system. We discover that the driving force is significantly improved via the gel-typed propellant for laser ablation.

  • The stability and structure of bluff-body stabilized hydrogen flames were investigated numerically and experimentally. The velocity of coflowing air was varied from subsonic velocity to a supersonic velocity of Mach 1.8. OH PLIF images and Schlieren images were used for analysis. Flame regimes were used to classify the characteristic flame modes according to the variation of the fuel-air velocity ratio, into jet-like flame, central-jet-dominated flame, and recirculation zone flame. Stability curves were drawn to find the blowout regimes and to show the improvement in flame stability with increasing lip thickness of the fuel tube, which acts as a bluff-body. These curves collapse to a single line when the blowout curves are normalized by the size of the bluff-body. The variation of flame length with the increase in air flow rate was also investigated. In the subsonic coflow condition, the flame length decreased significantly, but in the supersonic coflow condition, the flame length increased slowly and finally reached a near-constant value. This phenomenon is attributed to the air-entrainment of subsonic flow and the compressibility effect of supersonic flow. The closed-tip recirculation zone flames in supersonic coflow had a reacting core in the partially premixed zone, where the fuel jet lost its momentum due to the high-pressure zone and followed the recirculation zone; this behavior resulted in the long characteristic time for the fuel-air mixing.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze two-phase flows of the hydrogen recirculation system. Two-phase flow modeling is one of the great challenges in the classical sciences. As with most problems in engineering, the interest in two-phase flow is due to its extreme importance in various industrial applications. In hydrogen recirculation systems of fuel cell, the changes in pressure and temperature affect the phase change of mixture. Therefore, two-phase flow analysis of the hydrogen recirculation system is very important. Two-phase computation fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations, using a commercial CFD package FLUENT 6.2, were employed to calculate the gas-liquid flow. A two-phase flow calculation was conducted to solve continuity, momentum, energy equation for each phase. Then, the mass transfer between water vapor and liquid water was calculated. Through an experiment to measure production of liquid water with change of pressure, the analysis model was verified. The predictions of rate of condensed liquid water with change of pressure were within an average error of about 5%. A comparison of experimental and computed data was found to be in good agreement. The variations of performance, properties, mass fraction and two-phase flow characteristic of mixture with resepct to the fuel cell power were investigated.

  • Six shear coaxial injectors for a 3 tonf-class liquid rocket engine using oxygen and methane as propellants were designed and manufactured by considering geometric design parameters such as a recess length and a taper angle. Cold-flow tests on the injectors were performed using water and air as simulants. By changing the water mass flow rate and air mass flow rate, the injection pressure drop under single-injection and bi-injection was measured. The discharge coefficients through the injector oxidizer-side and fuel-side were calculated and the discharge coefficient ratio between bi-injection and single-injection was obtained. Under single-injection, the recess served to reduce the injection pressure drop on the injector fuel-side. For the injectors without recess, the discharge coefficients under bi-injection were almost the same as those under single-injection. However, for the injectors with recess, the taper angle and bi-injection had a significant effect on the discharge coefficient.

  • An experimental study was presented for extinguishing characteristics of liquid fuel fire by water mist($Dv_{0.99}{\leq}200{\mu}m$) containing potassium acetate and sodium acetate trihydrate. To evaluate the extinguishing performance of water mist containing additives, the evaporation characteristics of a water droplet on a heated surface was examined. The evaporation process was recorded by a charge-coupled-device camera. Also, small-scale extinguishing tests were conducted for n-heptane pool fire in ventilated space. During the experiments, flame temperatures were measured, and concentrations of oxygen and carbon monoxide were analyzed by a combustion gas analyzer. The average evaporation rate of water droplet containing additives was lower than that of pure water at a given surface temperature and decreased with the concentration increase due to the precipitation of salt in the liquid-film and change of surface tension. In case of using additives, the fire extinguishing times was shorter than that of pure water at a given discharge pressure and it was because the momentum of a water droplet containing additives was increased. And also dissociated metal atoms, potassium or sodium, were reacted as a scavenger of the major radical species OH, H which were generated for combustion process. Moreover, at a high pressure of 4 MPa, the fire was extinguished through blowing effect as well as primary extinguishing mechanisms.
