Solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) has a higher fuel flexibility than low temperature fuel cells, such as polymer electrolyte fuel cell(PEMFC) and phosphoric acid fuel cell(PAFC). SOFCs also use CO and $CH_4$ as a fuel, because SOFCs are hot enough to allow the CH4 steam reformation(SR) reaction and water-gas shift(WGS) reaction occur within the SOFC stack itself. Diesel is a good candidate for SOFC system fuel because diesel reformate gas include a higher degree of CO and $CH_4$ concentration than other hydrocarbon(methane, butane, etc.) reformate gas. Selection of catalyst for autothermalr reforming of diesel was performed in this paper, and characteristics of reforming performance between packed-bed and microchannel catalyst are compared for SOFC system. The mesh-typed microchannel catalyst also investigated for diesel ATR operation for 1kW-class SOFC system. 1kW-class diesel microchannel ATR was continuously operated about 30 hours and its reforming efficiency was achieved nearly 55%.

IGCC(Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) power plant are becoming more attractive because of fuel flexibility and low emission. In this study, performances are evaluated when the low caloric value syngas fuels producted in gasification process is used a gas turbine originally designed naturel gas fuel. Using GateCycle computational thermal analysis model, performances of GE 7FA gas turbine are predicted for using four types of syngas. Also, off design performance is presented for firing syngas fuel in the gas turbine.
The cofiring of renewable fuel in coal fired boilers is an attractive option to mitigate $CO_2$ emissions, since it is relatively low cost option for efficiently converting renewable fuel to electricity by adding biomass as partial substitute of coal. However, it would lead to reduce plant efficiency and flexibility in operation, and increase operation cost and capital cost associated with renewable fuels handling and firing equipment. The aim of this study is to investigate reduction of carbon dioxide at varying percentage of biomass in fuel blend to the boiler biomass, and estimate operation and capital cost. Wood pellet, PKS (palm kernel shell), EFB (empty fruit bunch) and sludge are considered as a renewable fuels for a cofiring with coal. Several approaches by the cofiring ratio are chosen from past plant demonstrations and commercial cofiring operation, and they are evaluated and discussed for CO2 reduction and cost estimation.
A 4-bundle shift refuelling method of CANDU6 F/H (Fuel Handling) System is analyzed to assess the operational flexibility and capacity of F/H system. The current 8-bundle shift refuelling scheme requires to refuel eight fuel bundles from a single fuel channel, and to refuel 14 fuel channels in a week on average assuming that the reactor is in a steady state. The analysis showed that the 4-bundle shift refuelling method increases F/M (Fuelling Machine) duty cycle and operator load. However, the fuellin’g method change from the 8- to 4-bundle shift refuelling ill not require additional team of operators. A marginal increase in the maintenance cost may be resulted in by the change of fuelling method and the increase of fatigue usage factors requires some components to be replaced during the FM lifetime.
This paper focuses on the combustion characteristics of blended coals with bituminous and sub-bituminous coals under air and oxy-fuel combustion conditions. The effects of oxygen concentration and blending ratio on the combustion characteristics were experimentally investigated using a thermogravimetric analyser (TGA). Characteristic temperatures including ignition, burnout temperature and activation energy were determined from TG and DTG combustion profiles. As oxygen concentration increased and the presence of sub-bituminous coal, characteristic temperatures and activation energy decreased. The ignitability, reactivity and kinetics have all been greatly improved under oxy-fuel combustion conditions. Based on this, co-firing with bituminous and sub-bituminous coals under oxy-fuel combustion conditions may be suggested as an alternative method to the fuel flexibility and cost-effective power production with carbon capture and sequestration.
This paper describes an study electric injection system for diesel engines. It is needed effective fuel injection which controls the solenoid valve of fuel pump. To solve this, this paper proposes DCC-PWM method which can realize fast reply and low holding current for solenoid valve on/off. For the proposed design method, simulation tools of ACSL are used to analyze the system. And the single-chip microcomputer is used to reduce the size of controller and to improve flexibility. And the system's validity can be verified through the experimental results.
In this paper a power conditioning system suitable for the fuel cell powered off-road vehicle is proposed. The proposed system employs a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell stack combined with boost converter, a super capacitor module combined with hi-directional buck-boost converter, a 4-quadrant DC chopper and a permanent magnet DC motor. The momentary overload condition occurring during the motor starting is handled by the energy stored in the supercapacitor module. Also, the regenerative energy can be stored in the supercapacitor module by operating the system in either buck or boost mode. This capability gives the system designer the higher flexibility in designing the system and assures the lower cost of the system. The validity and feasibility of the proposed system is proven by the computer simulation.
Solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) has high fuel flexibility due to its high operating temperatures. Hydrocarbonaceous fuels such as diesel has several advantages such as high energy density and established infrastructure for fuel cell applications. However diesel reforming has technical problems like coke formation in a reactor, which results in catastrophic failure of whole system. Performance degradation of diesel autothermal reforming (ATR) leads to increase of undesirable hydrocarbons at reformed gases and subsequently degrades SOFC performance. In this study, we investigate the degradation of SOFC performance(OCV, open circuit voltage) under hydrocarbon(n-Butane) feeds and characteristics of diesel performing under various ratios of reactants($H_2O/C,\;O_2/C$ molar ratios) for improvement of SOFC performance. Especially we achieved relatively high performance of diesel ATR under $H_2O/C=0.8,\;O_2/C=3$ condition.

Proper discharge of nitrogen gas and water condensate is required in a conventional fuel cell system for performance, stability and durability of fuel cell stacks. Present study covers the development of integrated unit and its functioning logic for simultaneous nitrogen gas purge and water condensate drainage in a fuel cell vehicle system. Configuration of condensate drainage pipe, purge valve and level sensor is considered and optimized in physical integration. As a key factor, discharge time is considered and optimized based on the test result of constant-current operation with various operating temperature in logic development. Consequently, derived optimal values are applied and verified in actual vehicle drive mode test. Increase of system design flexibility, weight reduction and cost reduction are anticipated with this study. Additional study for physical and logical improvement is currently being implemented.

Recently, renewable power is rapidly increasing globally due to extensive effort to mitigate climate change and conventional power generation industry faces new challenges. The gas turbine technology has potentials to expand its role in future power generation based on the intrinsic characteristics such as fuel diversity and fast load following ability. Hydrogen is one of the most promising fuel in terms of reducing emissions and storing variable renewable energy and replacing hydrocarbon fuel with hydrogen has become very popular. Therefore, this paper presents the core technologies to combust hydrogen added fuel efficiently in gas turbines and the analysis of domestic and international R&D trends.
