  • Mechanical behavior of a fuel stack was studied using an orthotropic material model. The fuel stack is essentially composed of a bipolar plate (BP), a gasket, an end plate, a membrane electrolyte assembly (MEA), and a gas diffusion layer (GDL). Each component is fastened with a suitable pressure. It is important to maintain a suitable contact pressure distribution of BP, because it influences the power efficiency of the fuel cell stack. When it is exposed to high temperature, its behavior must be stable. Hence, we performed stress analysis at high temperature as well as at room temperature. At high temperature, the contact pressure distribution becomes poor. Many patents have shown that using an elastomer can overcome this phenomena. Its effect was also studied. By using an elastomer, we found a good contact pressure distribution at high temperature as well as at room temperature.

  • A proper stacking force and assembly are important to the performance of fuel cell. Improper assembly pressure may lead to leakage of fuels and high interfacial contact resistance, excessive assembly pressure may result in damage to the gas diffusion layer and other components. The pressure distribution of gas diffusion layer is important to make interfacial contact resistance less for stack performance. To analyze the influence of design parameter factors for pressure distribution, and to optimize stack design, DOE (Design of Experiment) was used for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell stack pressure test. As commonly known, the higher clamping force improves the fuel cell stack performance. However, non-uniformity of stress distribution is also increased. It shows that optimization between clamping force and stress distribution is needed for well designed structure of fuel cell stack. In this study, stack design optimization method is suggested by using FEM (Finite Element Methode) and DOE for light-weighted fuel cell stack.

  • A proper sealant for low temperature SOFCs should show zero or low leak rates to avoid direct mixing of the fuel and oxidant gases or leakage of fuel gas during the operation of SOFCs. Furthermore, it should be chemically and/or mechanically stable in both oxidizing and reducing environments and chemically compatible with other fuel cell components. In the present work, we developed a novel compressed seal gasket of glass-based composite reinforced with ceramic particulate particles, which can efficiently control the viscous flow of glass matrix as well as the crystallization of glass phase. This novel sealing gasket showed excellent gas tightness under very low compressive load which would be suitable for the operation of SOFCs in the temperature range $600{\sim}650^{\circ}C$.

  • In order to explore properties of various rubber compounds after thermal aging under the condition similar to the operating environment of a fuel cell-stack, heat resistance and compression set of those compounds were investigated for a long term operation in $H_2SO_4$, $H_2O$, and LLC (ethylene glycol : $H_2O=50:50$) solution. It was assumed that aging Acrylonitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and Elthylene Propylene diene rubber (EDPM) compound in the solution resulted in discoloration as time passed. It was also found that hydrolysis was developed on the Silicone rubber (VMQ) compound intentionally aged under acidic condition by means of TGA, SEM, and EDS analysis.

  • The solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has attracted great deal of attention due to its high electrical efficiency, high waste-heat utilization, fuel flexibility, and application versatility. However, SOFC technology is still not matured enough to fulfill the practical requirements for commercialization. Therefore, all the research and development activities are mainly focused on a development of practically viable SOFCs with higher performance and better reliability. We were successful in fabricating high-performance anode-supported unit cells by employing hierarchically controlled multi-layered electrodes for both structural reliability and high performance. In addition, a novel composite sealing gasket made it possible to achieve excellent sealing integrity even with considerable surface irregularities in a multi-cell planar arrayed stack.

  • In this research, $5\times5cm^2$ unit cells were fabricated via liquid condensation process and uniaxial pressing followed by the screen printing of electrolyte and cathode layer. The SOFC stack was assembled with unit cells, gasket-type sealant and metal interconnect. The stack was designed to have a single column with internal-manifold and cross-flow type gas-channels. The SOFC stack produced 15 W, which is $50\%$ of the maximum power being expected from the maximum power density of the unit cell. Controlling factors for the proper operation of the SOFC stack and other designing factors of stack manifold and gas channels were discussed.
