  • A numerical study was performed on the transient fuel temperatures of a military aircraft stationed under non-operating static condition. Numerical calculation was peformed by an explicit method using modified Dufort-Frankel scheme. It was assumed that the non-operating aircraft is subjected to repeated daily cycles of air temperature with the solar radiation and wind speed corresponding to the 1 % hot day ambient condition. And, the aircraft was assumed to be in turbulent flow. The convective heat transfer coefficient for turbulent flow on the flat plate suggested by Eckert was employed to calculate heat transfer between the aircraft surface and the ambience. The energy conservation equation on fuel was used as governing equation for this analysis. As a result of this analysis, the wing tank temperature showed the highest temperature and the largest rate of temperature changes among fuel tanks. The results of this analysis could be used as initial foe] temperatures for analysis of the transient fuel temperatures in various flight missions. Also, this analysis method could be used to analysis and design of an aircraft thermal energy management system.

  • The use of the electromagnetic clutch water pump for internal combustion engine vehicles saves fuel and leads to a reduction in emissions. The clutch water pump allows the engine cooling system to select the optimum operation condition by using coolant flow rate on/off control. This study investigated the characteristics of fuel consumption and emissions of the diesel engine cooling system using the clutch water pump. The electromagnetic clutch operation reduced by about 49% of engine warm up period at idle condition and controlled the optimum high coolant temperature at driving condition. Therefore, fuel consumption was enhanced by about 5%, and emissions such as HC, CO and $CO_2$ were also reduced to a certain degree even though NOx increased a little bit, compared to those of the conventional water pump under NEDC mode which represents the real driving pattern.

  • Recently the fuel cell has been spotlighted as a technology to reduce greenhouse gases emission from a ship. In this research, internal reforming 500kW solid oxide fuel cell stacks fueled by methane for a ship were developed. Characteristics of power and efficiency depending on the number of cells in the stack, hydrogen conversion ratio, and active area of the cell are evaluated. Also the effects of air and methane supplying conditions on performance are analyzed. As a result, as the number of cells, hydrogen conversion ratio, active area of the cell, or supplied air flow rate increase, the stack power and efficiency increase. When the methane flow rate increases, the power increases. However the efficiency decreases. In addition, the case at the current of 976.4 A, voltage of 529.1 V, with corresponding power of 516.6 kW shows that the efficiency of fuel cell stack is 42.91%.

  • The performance simulation program on the turboprop engine(PT6A-62), which is a main engine of the first trainer KT-1 in republic of Korea, was developed. Characteristics of engine components were required for the steady-state performance analysis including on and off design point analysis. In most cases, these were substituted for what scaled from well known engine components characteristics with the scaling law. The developed program was compared with CASTURB program which is well known for the simulation performance analysis, such as analysis results of mass flow rate, compressor pressure ratio, fuel flow rate, power, specific fuel consumption ratio and turbine inlet temperature in the following four cases, to evaluate whether the developed program is acceptable or not. The first case was the sea level static standard condition and other cases were considered with various flight Mach numbers, altitudes. After verifying the developed program, the partload performance analysis was carried out. Transient performance analysis for various fuel schedules were performed. When the fuel step increase of 0.1sec was performed, the overshoot of the compressor turbine inlet temperature occurred. However, the fuel ramp increase for longer than 0.1sec time was performed, the overshoot could be eliminated.

  • The spacer grid set is a component in the nuclear fuel assembly. The set supports the fuel rods saftely. Therefore, the spacer gl1d set should have sufficient strength for the external impact forces. The fretting wear occurs between the spring of the fuel rod and the spacer grid due to tile flow-induced vibration. The conceptual design of the spacer grid set is performed based on the Independence Axiom of axiomatic design. Two functional requirements are defined and corresponding design parameters are selected. The overall flow of the design is defined according to the application of axiomatic design. The design for the impact load is carried out by using nonlinear dynamic analysis to determine the length of the dimple. Topology optimization is carried out to determine a new configuration of the spring. The fretting wear is reduced by shape optimization using the homology theory. In the design to reduce the fretting wear, the deformed shape of the spring should be the same as that of the fuel rod. This condition is transformed to a function and considered as a constraint in the shape optimization process. The fretting wear is expected to be reduced due to the homology constraint. The objective function is minimizing the maximum stress to allow a slight plastic deformation. Shape optimization results are confirmed through nonlinear static analysis because the contact area becomes wider.

  • Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. has been recently developing the gas turbine engine using the biogas as fuel. This paper describes the non-reacting and reacting flow analysis of the combustor which is one of the main components in gas turbine engine. Through CFD analysis, investigation has been performed to evaluate the primary factors for aerodynamic design and to predict combustor behaviors during operation with various fuel distribution ratios. The calculation results are compared with rig test data, which reveals that CFD predictions such as pressure loss, air distribution ratio, and recirculation flow are quite reliable. The trend of NO formation was similar with the test, except the low fuel distribution ratio.

  • Hydrogen combustion in modern gas-turbine engine is the cutting edge technology as carbon-free energy conversion system. Flashback of hydrogen flame, however, is inevitable and critical specially for premixed hydrogen combustion. Therefore, this experimental investigation is conducted to understand flashback phenomenon in premixed hydrogen combustion. In order to investigate flashback characteristics in premixed hydrogen (H2)/air flame, we focus on pressure conditions and nozzle shapes. In general, quenching distance reduces as pressure of combustion chamber increases, causing flashback from boundary layer near wall. The flashback regime for reference and modified candidate configurations can broadly appear with increasing combustion chamber pressure. The later one can improve flashback-resist by compensating flow velocity at wall. Also, improved wall flow velocity profile of suggested contraction nozzle prevents entire flashback but causes local flashback at nozzle exit.

  • Most of the motorcycle engines have used carburetors in the fuel system, because of its simple structure and reliability but the fuel economy and the emissions of those engines are bad when we compared with automobile engines .To meet with the tighten emission regulations and the higher requirements for fuel economy, the application of the carburetor on the motorcycle engines would be limited. Therefore, it is important to develope a ECU control system for motorcycle engines. Since the fuel injection system is expensive, it is necessary to decrease the cost of ECU system for motorcycle engines, but the accuracy of the ECU control system should be increased as high as possible. In this paper, we studied about the AFS characteristics of motorcycle engine controled by indirect method.

  • LOFT LBLOCA test, LP-02-6 was analyzed using RELAP5/MOD3.2. It has a distinguished thermal-hydraulic phenomenon of a positive bottom-up core flow in tile blowdown phase. A modified nodalization which is based on that used in LP-LB-1 calculation by Lubbesmeyer was used in the calculation. RELAP5/MOD3.2 predicted overall system hydraulic behavior relatively well. However, the bottom-up quenching in the middle part of the core was not predicted sufficiently. It was demonstrated also that the peak cladding temperature can be predicted well by adjusting a discharge coefficient. But more improvements are needed in order to apply this code to actual plants with less user dependency.
