  • This paper is the third of 3 companion papers which investigate axial stratification process. In-cylinder fuel behavior has been investigated in the port injected SI engine by visualizing for the purpose of understanding stratification. Planar laser light sheet from an Nd:YAG laser has been illuminated through the transparent quartz cylinder of the single cylinder optical engine and the Mie scattered light has been captured through the quartz window in the piston head with an ICCD camera. Fuel has been replaced with an air-ethanol mixture to utilize atomized fuel spray for the visualization purposes. This results have been compared with steady flow concentration measurement. In high swirl port, the most fuel remains at combustion chamber and upper cylinder region without being affected by injection timing. The macro-distributed state is not changed but the difference of the amount of fuel around the spark plug varies according to injection timing, which determines LML.

  • In this study, the coupled simulation of fuel injection model and three-dimensional KIVA-3V code was tried to develop an algorism for predicting the effects of varying fuel injection parameter on the characteristics of fuel injection and emissions. The numerical simulations were performed using STAR-CD code in order to calculate the intake air flow, and the combustion characteristics is examined by KIVA-3V code linked with the conditional moment closure(CMC) model to predict mean turbulent reaction rate. Parametric investigation with respect to twelve relevant injection parameters shows that appropriate modification of control chamber orifice diameter, needle valve spring constant and nozzle chamber orifice diameter can significantly reduce NOx and soot emissions. Consequently, it is needed to optimize the fuel injection system to reduce the specific emissions such as NOx and soot.

  • This study discusses a fuel injector test bench containing a mechanical type fuel supply system for heavy duty diesel engine. The main focus of this study was to evaluate the design stability of the test bench, which basically measures the injector durability of a multi-hole heavy duty injector by using pure diesel as a test fuel. In this experiment, diesel spray was controlled by a specially designed control box and all the experiments were carried out to measure e.g. fuel injection pressure and fuel injection quantity to understand the injection status which is interlinked with the stability factor of total test bench design. Also, the durability test was performed to understand the heavy duty operation lastingness of the designed system and the flow rate of the installed distributor pump in the fuel supply system of this studying test bench was compared with LO-1 and LO-2 pump. The results of the above mention tests revealed that the injector test bench design and control system can serve the purpose for heavy duty injector.

  • This study investigates the effects of different kind fuels on the flame structure by using the numerical simulation in triple flame made by a co-flowing fuels-air stream based on the elementary chemical reaction mechanism. Methane and Hydrogen were used as fuel for this study. In order to interpret the result of the study on numerical simulation Skeletal chemistry is employe as the elementary chemical reaction mechanism for methane Gutheil's as an offset ele-mentary chemical reaction mechanism for hydrogen. The result of this study is as follows. In com-parison between the apparent burning velocity change of triple flame and the one-dimensional pre-mixed flame hydrogen fuel flame is higher than methane fuel flame. The flame thrusts out for-ward in the down stream of the boundary between air-fuel mixture and air stream and a part of the flow is bent and forks out in this protruding flame so that a triple flame is originated.

  • This paper presents small hydrogen regulator for the mobile fuel cell. Mobile fuel cell is generally classified into open-end type and dead-end type. In the open-end type, flow rate of hydrogen is constantly controlled, while pressure of hydrogen is constantly maintained in the dead-end type. Considering the efficiency and stability of the fuel usage, dead-end type is more suitable with mobile fuel cell. Mobile fuel cell operated by dead-end mode requires hydrogen regulator which controls the hydrogen pressure from 0.1bar to 0.5bar within 3% error. In this paper, small hydrogen regulator (volume of 2.6cc) was fabricated by stainless steel. Regulation characteristics was experimentally evaluated.

  • The liquid phase LPG injection engine is a new technology to make good use of LPG as a clean energy. However, it is difficult to precisely control air/fuel ratio in the system because of variation of fuel composition, change of temperature and flash boiling injection mechanism. This study newly suggests an injector control logic for liquid phase LPG injection systems. This logic compensates a number of effects such as variations of density, stoichiometric air/fuel ratio, injection delay time, injection pressure, release pressure which is formed by flash boiling of fuel at nozzle exit. This logic can precisely control air/fuel ratio with only two parameters of intake air flow rate and injection pressure without considering fuel composition, fuel temperature.

  • In this research, the fuel cell system model capable of generating codes in real time was developed to construct of a HIL (Hardware-In-the-Loop) for a SOFC-powered ship. Moreover, the effects of the distribution of the exhaust gas flow rates in a stack, the flow rates of fuels and temperature of air supplied on the temperature characteristics of fuels supplied to the cathode and the anode, the output power of the stack and system efficiency are examined to minimize the temperature difference between fuels supplied to the stack used in a 500kW SOFC system using methane as a fuel. As a result, the temperatures of fuels supplied to the cathode and the anode maintain at 830K when the opening factor of three-way valve located at outlet of turbine is 0.839. Also the process for optimization of methane flow rate considering the fuel cell stack and system efficiency is required to increase the temperatures of fuels supplied to the stack.

  • A Fuel-rich preburner using kerosene fuel is operated in a non-equilibrium condition and a prediction of burnt-gas properties is not easy from a chemical equilibrium analysis. A premixed counter-flow flame analysis was conducted for the prediction of burnt-gas properties. JP10 was selected for a representative kerosene fuel and a non-equilibrium combustion analysis was accomplished in supercritical condition using UC San Diego reaction mechanism. The premixed counter-flow flame was assumed for stationary and stable flame, and the temperature result in present study was overestimated rather than the experimental results from Huzel. From the difference of the temperature result, other properties, heat capacity, specific heat ratio and molecular weight had some differences against the experimental results. Moreover, the present results was more similar to the experimental results than those of the equilibrium analysis.

  • A fuel supply system of heavy-duty CNG engine is composed as a module structure which is integrated by about 6 injectors. There are only one input and output passage for gas fuel supply in this injector module. The response performance for transient operation of an CNG engine is very poor because only one output fuel supply line is connected to the intake pipe after a throttle valve. In this study, a new guideline and internal flow design for the CNG injector module is suggested for the improvement of response performance by fluid dynamic simulations. As a result, the response performance of gas fuel supply can be improved by decreasing the total volume of internal flow passages and a same distance design from each injector to the exit of module shows good response performance and acquirement of linearity of fuel supply. But the injection order has little influence to injection performances.

  • As the performance of PEMFC has been improved, the water and heat generated by reaction have increased so, the water and heat management of PEMFC is becoming more important. In this study, hydrogen recirculation was applied as the water management technique and the effect of recirculation flow rate, purge interval and duration on the performance of PEMFC was investigated. Anode pressure, fuel humidity and utilization, water discharge amount was measured to check the effect of purge conditions on performance. As the recirculation flow rate has increased, the performance of PEMFC became lower due to decrease of anode outlet pressure. According to the purge conditions, instantaneous voltage drop has occurred because of accumulated water. In frequent purge conditions, the performance of PEMFC gradually decreased due to fuel humidity control failure. Stable performance and high fuel utilization was achieved on this work by analyzing the effect of purge conditions.
