Fuel cells are one of the renewable energy sources that have sparked a lot of scientific attention for solving problems related to the energy crisis and environmental pollution. One of the most crucial subjects concerning the utilization of fuel cells is modeling. Therefore, an analytical steady-state and dynamic fuel cell model was described in this study. The parameter for the identification process was investigated, and the MATLAB/Simulink implementation was demonstrated. A 15-W proton exchange membrane fuel cell was used to apply the suggested modeling methodology. Comparing experimental and simulation findings indicated that the model error was constrained to 3%. This study showed that temperature and humidity affect fuel cell performance.

This study presents an experiment investigation on natural convection heat transfer of air-cooling Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) in a enclosure system for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Considered are replacing fuel cell stack with Aluminum block for heat generating inside a enclosure chamber. The volume ratio of fuel cell stack and chamber for simulation to the actual size of aerial vehicle is 1 to 15. The parameters considered for experimental study are the environmental temperature range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $-60^{\circ}C$ and the block heat input of 10 W, 20 W and 30 W. Effect of the thermal conductivity of the block and power level on heat transfer in the chamber are investigated. Experimental results illustrate the temperature rise at various locations inside the chamber as dependent upon heat input of fuel cell stack and environmental temperature. From the results, dimensionless correlation in natural convection was proposed with Nusselt number and Rayleigh number for designing air-cooling PEMFC powered high altitude long endurance (HALE) UAV.

In this study, the kg-class Ni-Al alloy fabrication process at low temperature was developed from the physical mixture of Ni and Al powders. The AlCl3 as an activator was used to reduce the temperature of alloy synthesis below the melting temperature of Ni and Al elements (<$500^{\circ}C$). Mixed phase of Ni3Al intermetallic and Ni-Al solid-solution were identified in the XRD pattern analysis. Furthermore, from the analysis of SEM and particle size analyzer, we found that the particle size of synthesized alloy powders was not changed compared to the initial size of Ni particle after the formation of alloy powder at $500^{\circ}C$. In the creep test, the anode (which was fabricated by the prepared Ni-Al alloy powders in this study) displayed the enhanced creep resistance compared to the conventional anode.

Data centers not only consume significant electricity to operate IT equipment, but also use a lot of electricity to cool the heat generated by IT equipment. The waste heat of a high-temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cell (HT-PEFC) is capable of producing cooling , so it can be effectively applied to data centers that require cooling throughout the year. The energy-saving effects of the proposed combined cooling, heat and power (CCHP) system using HT-PEFC. That was analyzed based on the annual energy consumption data of a specific data center. When the system was running at 100% of the year, It was shown that the installation of 1 MW of the proposed system can save 3,407 MWh of electrical energy per year. In addition, compared to the existing system, the annual power usage effectiveness can be improved from 2.0 to 1.57 and 6,293 MWh of extra heat energy per year can be produced to sell. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis was performed on the fuel cell operating temperature and current density to guide the appropriate installation capacity of the proposed system.

This paper presents guideline for a practical design of the hybrid system combining a pressurized solid oxide fuel cell and a gas turbine. Design of the hybrid system based on a virtually designed gas turbine was simulated using models for off-design operation of the gas turbine. Two system configurations, with different method for supplying reforming steam, are considered and their design characteristics are compared. A higher design cell temperature provides better system performance. However, there exists a maximum allowable design cell temperature because the operating point of the compressor approaches the surge point with increasing fuel cell temperature. Increased pressure loss at the fuel cell moves the compressor operating point toward the surge point and reduces system performance.
The influence of potential and humidity on the electrochemical carbon corrosion in high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells(HT-PEMFCs) is investigated by measuring $CO_2$ emission at different potentials for 30 min using on-line mass spectrometry. These results are compared with low tempterature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells(LT-PEMFCs) operated at lower temperature and higher humidity condition. Although the HT-PEMFC is operated at non humidified condition, the emitted $CO_2$ in the condition of HT-PEMFC is more than LT-PEMFC at the same potential in carbon corrosion test. Thus, carbon corrosion shows a stronger positive correlation with the cell temperature. In addition, the presence of a little amount of water activate electrochemical carbon corrosion considerably in HT-PEMFC. With increased carbon corrosion, changes in fuel cell electrochemical characteristics become more noticeable and thereby indicate that such corrosion considerably affects fuel cell durability.
The fuel cell has been continuously studied as environment-compatible alternative energy technology. Lately the basic techniques about stacking and widening are considered to be important for practical use. Although phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) is the most progressed one in the fuel cell technologies, few studies about temperature profile of the stack which can be the basic data for the fuel cell design have been reported yet. In this study, the temperature profile of PAFC stack was simulated. The temperature profiles of stack were obtained at various operating conditions, and when stack is operated the proper position to measure the temperature could be predicted. Also we can propose more effective cooling design. The standard deviation of the temperature profile of the proposed design was is about 50% smaller.
A new process to fabricate a composite LSCF-Ag cathode material for SOFCs by electron beam (e-beam) irradiation process has been suggested for operation under intermediate temperature range of $600-700^{\circ}C$. A composite LSCF-Ag cathode with uniformly coated Ag nanoparticles on the surface of the LSCF material was prepared by a facile e-beam irradiation method at room temperature. The morphology of the composite LSCF-Ag material was analyzed using a TEM, FE-SEM, and EDS. The prepared composite LSCF-Ag material can play a significant role in increasing the electro-catalytic activities and reducing the operating temperature of SOFCs. The performance of a tubular single cell prepared using the composite LSCF-Ag cathode, YSZ electrolyte and a Ni/YSZ anode was evaluated at reduced operating temperature of $600-700^{\circ}C$. The micro-structure and chemical composition of the single cell were investigated using a FE-SEM and EDS.
Proton exchange membrane (PEM) should be sufficiently hydrated with proper water management to maintain a good ionic conductivity and performance of a PEM fuel cell. However. cathode flooding resulting from excess water can impede the transport of reactants and hence deteriorate the fuel cell performance. For the PEM fuel cell to be commercially viable as vehicle or portable applications, the flooding on the cathode side should be minimized during the fuel cell operation. In this study, visualization technique was applied to understand the cathode flooding phenomena on the cathode side of a PEM fuel cell. To this end. a transparent PEM unit fuel cell wi th an act ive area of $25cm^2$ was designed and manufactured to allow for the visualization of cathode channel with performance characteristics. Two-phase flow resulting from the electro-chemical reaction of fuel cell was investigated experimentally. The images photographed by CCD camera with cell operating temperatures $(30\~50^{\circ}C)$ were presented. Results indicated that the flooding on the cathode side first occurs near the exit of cathode channel. As the operating temperature of fuel cell increases. it was found that liquid water droplets tend to evaporate easily and it can have an influence on lowering the flooding level. It is expected that this study can effectively contribute to the detailed researches on modeling water transport of an operating PEM fuel cell including two-phase flow phenomena.
Submicron thick solid electrolyte membrane is essential to the implementation of low temperature solid oxide fuel cell, and, therefore, development of new electrode structures is necessary for the submicron thick solid electrolyte deposition while providing functions as current collector and fuel transport channel. In this research, a nickel membrane with multi-stage nano hole array has been produced via modified two step replication process. The obtained membrane has practical size of 12mm diameter and $50{\mu}m$ thickness. The multi-stage nature provides 20nm pores on one side and 200nm on the other side. The 20nm side provides catalyst layer and $30\~40\%$ planar porosity was measured. The successful deposition of submicron thick yttria stabilized zirconia membrane on the substrate shows the possibility of achieving a low temperature solid oxide fuel cell.
