천연가스 개질기와 연계한 연료전지시스템의 운전특성 (Operating Characteristics on Coupling of Fuel-Cell System with Natural Gas Reformer)

  • A reformer, which produces hydrogen from natural gas, plays a major role for producing quality hydrogen to fuel-cell system. In this paper, fuel processor is designed to deliver hydrogen(75%) from the reformer to 200W fuel-cell system, and the electrical output power of the fuel-cells is examined by being injected different hydrogen concentrations to the system. We verified that the output power characteristics of the fuel-cells with 75% reformed hydrogen was lower about 7% than the case of pure hydrogen supplied. The type of reformer in this experiment takes SMR(Steam methane reforming) process, and the temperature variation characteristics of reforming process by reactions are examined in operation.

  • The Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) is an electrochemical device to convert chemical energy of a fuel into electricity at temperatures from about 600 to $1000^{\circ}C$. The SOFC offers certain advantages over lower temperature fuel cells, notably its ability to use CO as a fuel rather than being poisoned by it, and high grade exhaust heat for combined heat and power, or combined cycle gas turbine applications. This paper reviews the operating principle, materials for different cell and stack components, cell designs, and applications of SOFCs. Among all designs of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs), the most progress has been achieved with the tubular design. However, the electrical resistance of tubular SOFCs is high, and specific power output $(W/cm^2)$ and volumetric power density $(W/cm^3)$ low. Planar SOFCs, in contrast, are capable of achieving very high power densities.

  • We have succeeded in the preparation of high molecular weight polybenzimidazoles by solution polycondensation of 3,3'-diaminobenzidine tetrahydrochloride with isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, or with their derivatives using polyphosphoric acid both as solvent and as condensing agent. Also, we modified phosphoric acid into fluoroalkyl-phosphonic acids[F-PA]. The main reasons are as follows, first of all F-PAs are stronger acids than PA and alkylphosphonic acids which should promote proton hopping and transport. In addition, F-PA has weaker adsorption onto Pt which help to prevent electrocatalyst poisoning and promote higher oxygen reduction activity. The ionic conductivity of 85%-H3PO4 doped membranes show $10^{-2}\;Scm^{-1}\;to\;3{\times}10^{-2}\;Scm^{-1}\;at\;150^{\circ}C$ MEA with 2 %-added electrolyte shows slightly higher cell voltage than the others.

  • The fuel cell is one of the promising environment-friendly energy sources for the next generation. The fuel cell provides good energy efficiency above 40% without pollution or noise. Different fuel cell types are usually distinguished by the kind of electrolyte. Among these, the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has advantages of high power density. low operating temperature, relatively quick start-up, and rapid response to varying loads. The bipolar plate is a major component of the PEM fuel cell stack, and it takes a large portion of stack volume, weight and cost. In this study, as alternative materials for bipolar plate of PEM fuel cells, graphite composites were fabricated by compression molding and by machining. Graphite particles mixed with epoxy resin were used as the main substance to provide electric conductivity. Flow channels were fabricated by compression molding with design of experiments (DOE) to evaluate moldability. The cost for compression molding of graphite-composite bipolar plate was compared with machining cost to make the same bipolar plate.

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been applied to not only military missions like surveillance and reconnaissance but also commercial missions like meteorological observation, aerial photograph, communication relay, internet network build and disaster observation. Fuel cells make UAVs eco-friendly by using hydrogen. Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) show low operation temperature, high efficiency, low noise and high energy density and those characterisitcs are well fitted with UAVs. Thus Fuel cell based UAVs have been actively developed in the world. Recently, fuel cell UAVs have started to develope for high altitude UAVs because target altitude of UAVs is expanded upto stratosphere altitude. Long endurance of UAVs is essential to improve effects of the missions. Improvement of UAV endurance time could be fulfilled by developing a hydrogen fuel storage system with high energy density and reducing the weight of UAVs. In this paper, research trend and analysis of fuel cell UAVs are introduced in terms of their altitude and endurance time and then the prospect of fuel cell UAVs are shown.

  • HT-PEMFC (high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell) using PA (phosphoric acid) doped PBI (polybenzimidazole) membrane has been researched for extending the lifetime. However, the existing work on durability of HT-PEMFC focuses on identifying degradation causes of lab scale. The short life time of HT-PEMFC is still the problem for its commercialization. In this paper, an operating method to maximize life time of 5kW HT-PEMFC stack are proposed. The proposed method includes major steps such as minimization of OCV (Open Circuit Voltage) exposure, control of the proper stack temperature, and N2 purging for the stack. This long life operating method was based on the fragmentary results of degradation from previous research works. Experimentally, the 5 kW homemade HT-PEMFC stack was operated for a long time based on the proposed method and the stack successfully can operate within the desired degradation rate for the target life time.

직접메탄올 연료전지의 운전 조건이 성능에 미치는 영향 (Effects of the Operating Conditions on the Performance of Direct Methanol Fuel Cells)

  • This study examines the effects of the ambient temperature (AT), methanol feeding temperature (MFT), methanol concentration (MC) and methanol flow rate (MFR) on the performance and cell temperature (CT) of a 5-stacked direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The AT, MFT, MC, and MFR are varied from $-10^{\circ}C$ to $+40^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$, 0.5M to 3.0M and 11.7 mL $min^{-1}$ to 46.8 mL $min^{-1}$, respectively. The performance of the DMFC under various operating conditions is analyzed from the I-V polarization curve, and the methanol crossover is estimated by gas chromatography (GC). The performance of the DMFC improves significantly with increasing AT. The open circuit voltage (OCV) decreases with increasing MC due to the enhanced likelihood of methanol crossover. The cell performance is improved significantly when the MFR is increased from 11.7 mL $min^{-1}$ to 28.08 mL $min^{-1}$. The change in cell performance is marginal with further increases in MFR. The CT increases significantly with increasing AT. The effect of the MFT and MFR is moderate, and the effect of MC is marginal on the CT of the DMFC.

고분자전해질형 연료전지의 효율향상에 대한 연구 (Efficiency Improvement Research in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell)

  • 연료전지의 안정성 여부를 장시간에 걸쳐 측정하기 위한 stability test logic을 LabVIEW 기반으로 설계하여 개선된 평가 system을 구성하였다. 일반적으로 사용되어온 logic에서 탈피하여 다량의 데이터 수집을 통한 평균값과 표준편차를 도출함으로서 연료전지 성능 데이터의 안정성 검증과 신뢰도를 대쪽 향상시킬 수 있었다. 가습의 새로운 개념인 water injection system방법을 제시하였으며 양측가습의 경우와 비교할 때 4% 이하의 미미한 성능 차이를 보였다. Water injection system의 경우 가습에 필요한 에너지를 최소화할 수 있으므로 전체적인 에너지효율을 높일 수 있고 system을 소형화할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. 영하의 조건에 연료전지를 방치한 후 실험을 수행한 경우 성능이 다소 감소하였으며, 이와 같은 현상은 MEA의 구조 및 제조사에 따라 영향을 받는 것으로 사료된다. 연료전지 운전 후 영하의 상태로 내려가기 전에 가스를 사용하여 내부의 물을 제거하는 방법에 대한 실험을 수행하였다. 저온방치 전 건조실험에서 전극면적이 $25cm^2$인 경우에 성능저하가 거의 없었다.

  • 청정에너지의 중요성이 부각됨에 따라 수소연료를 활용한 고효율, 무공해 전력 공급원인 연료전지에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있다. 연료전지는 전기화학 반응에 의한 화학에너지를 직접 전기에너지로 변환시키는 장치로 자동차, 우주항공, 산업 및 가정용 발전 등에 적용할 수 있는 잠재력이 있다. 최근 재료 및 에너지 변환공정 차원에서 바람직한 $200{\sim}500^{\circ}C$의 온도범위에서 작동하는 중온형 연료전지에 대한 새로운 인식과 이 온도범위에서 사용 가능한 수소이온 전도성 물질의 개발 필요성이 요구되고 있다. 본 논문은 고체 수소이온 전도체의 특성과 기술 현황을 소개하고, perovskite형 고체 무기 산화물을 이용한 중온형 연료전지 응용에 관한 연구에 대하여 고찰하였다.

  • DMFC(Direct Methanol Fuel Cell) has been considered as an attractive option to produce electric power in many application. In this study, in order to estimate the effects of the methanol concentration, wind velocity and temperature on the performance of DMFC, a physical prototype of DMFC was designed and manufactured, and the stack voltage of DMFC was measured during the operation of DMFC. Expecially, the experimental results showed that a low stack temperature, a low wind velocity and an excess methanol concentration lead to the increase of the time to reach the maximum stack voltage.
