  • The main objective of this study is to investigate the turning and zig-zag maneuvering performance of the well-known naval surface combatant DTMB (David Taylor Model Basin) 5415 hull with URANS (Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) method. Numerical simulations of static drift tests have been performed by a commercial RANS solver based on a finite volume method (FVM) in an unsteady manner. The fluid flow is considered as 3-D, incompressible and fully turbulent. Hydrodynamic analyses have been carried out for a fixed Froude number 0.28. During the analyses, the free surface effects have been taken into account using VOF (Volume of Fluid) method and the hull is considered as fixed. First, the code has been validated with the available experimental data in literature. After validation, static drift, static rudder and drift and rudder tests have been simulated. The forces and moments acting on the hull have been computed with URANS approach. Numerical results have been applied to determine the hydrodynamic maneuvering coefficients, such as, velocity terms and rudder terms. The acceleration, angular velocity and cross-coupled terms have been taken from the available experimental data. A computer program has been developed to apply a fast maneuvering simulation technique. Abkowitz's non-linear mathematical model has been used to calculate the forces and moment acting on the hull during the maneuvering motion. Euler method on the other hand has been applied to solve the simultaneous differential equations. Turning and zig-zag maneuvering simulations have been carried out and the maneuvering characteristics have been determined and the numerical simulation results have been compared with the available data in literature. In addition, viscous effects have been investigated using Eulerian approach for several static drift cases.

  • By examining the experimental results, the critical mean velocity which initiates the movement of riprap is increased with the riprap size in mean diameter, the mean diameter over water depth (d/h), Froude number (Fr), and turbulent shear velocity over critical mean velocity (u*/${\nu}$) which have great correlations among them so these parameters are adopted governing hydraulic stability for riprap. The hydraulic stability equation for riprap is developed by regression analysis. The developed equation is expanded from 0.36~0.73 m/s of experimental range to 0~5.0 m/s for the application in engineering discipline. So many useful relations among those parameters including critical mean velocity are derived by expanding to high Reynolds regions. Mean diameter calculation results by expanding to high Reynolds regions coincide with the calculations of ASCE and USBR at the range of 0~3.0 m/s and the calculation result of ASCE at the range of 3.0~5.0 m/s. The results by developed formulae coincide well with the formulae of ASCE in general and also the results by recently developed existing formulae of hydraulic stability for riprap. Thus, the developed equation has the high applicability in engineering discipline to evaluate the hydraulic stability for riprap.

  • This study gives the vertical motion analysis in multi-directional irregular waves using a commercial code(MAXSURF v.16) based on linear strip theory for a training ship. To verify the commercial code prior to the analysis, we guarantees the reliability of this paper's results using the commercial code by comparing with the results(Flokstra, 1974) of same hull and experimental conditions on a Panamax container. The analysis conditions are Beaufort wind scale No. 5($\bar{T}=5.46$, $H_{1/3}=2m$) based on ITTC wave spectrum, encounter angle Head & bow seas($150^{\circ}$) and Froude number Fn=0.257. Finally, we calculates heave RAO, pitch RAO and obtains the result of ship's response spectra for heave and pitch motions. In the motion response spectrum under the multi-directional irregular waves, heave motion reacts slightly high in short-crested waves and pitch motion reacts high in long-crested waves.

  • A V-shaped riffle is an artificial hydraulic structure haying two wings from the streamside with a narrow opening in between. It is usually made of crushed stones or large boulders. It limits channel width and accelerates the flow through the constricted section causing a local scour just downstream. The V-shaped riffle provides with a unique aquatic habitat by forming a pool and sandbars around the pool edge, increasing local morphologic, hydraulic and sedimentological diversity. This study investigates experimentally the scour characteristics of the V-shaped riffle in the sandbed stream and proposes a predictive equation for the scour. Total 45 cases of experiments were conducted to examine the effect of hydraulic factors and configuration of V-shaped riffle on the geometry of scour holes. From the comparison of the experimental results of this study with the predictive equation of spur dike by Breusers and Raudkivi(1991), it is found that their predictive equation of spur dike underestimates the maximum scour depth downstream of the V-shaped riffle. h new predictive equation for the maximum scour depth was developed using the non-dimensional hydraulic and geometrical variables. The parameters used in the proposed equations were determined using the experimental data. The analysis reveals that the scour depth is dependent dominantly on the Froude number at the opening of the V-shaped riffle, while the angle of riffle and the opening width also affect the scour depth. The proposed equation for the scour of V-shaped riffle well agrees with the experimental data. It can be used for estimating the scour of the V-shaped riffle in sandbed streams.

  • With the recent growth of environmental and ecological interests, various river restoration and habitat environment creation projects are being carried out. For this, the estimation of the habitat flow discharge is important. In U.S. and Europe nations, The instream flow incremental methodology (IFIM) has been used to estimate the habitat discharge. IFIM is the method that can be applied to evaluate the flow discharge for the suitable habitat. To use the IFIM in river, a habitat suitability index(HSI) for the target organism is needed. However, HSIs for only two species of Zacco platypus and Zacco temminckii were proposed from the field monitoring. Thus, for the estimation of the ecological flow rate for a group of fish, the development of the HSIs for various fish are necessary. In this study, physical data such as water level and flow rate, chemical data such as acidity and dissolved oxygen, and life data such as fish types and population are collected in Keum river watershed. Based on the 2,736 field data, HSIs for the following 6 fish are developed: Zacco platypus, Zacco temminckii, Microphysogobio yaluensis, Coreoleuciscus splendidus, Pungtungia herzi, Pseudogobio esocinus. Through the comparison with HSIs in the literature, the developed HSIs are modified. Also, the limits of Froude number, pH, and DO for 6 fish are proposed. The HSIs developed in this study can be utilized as a essential data for performing river project evaluations.
