Model tests using 2.0m model of the series 60 form( $C_{b}$= 0.6) were carried out in the Circulating Water Channel (CWC) in the Chosun University (CU, Korea) for the purpose of a correlative study with Towing Tank (TT). Resistance, propeller open water, self propulsion and wake survey tests were carried out and the results were extrapolated to the ship scale. These results were compared with the extrapolated ship values based on the model test of 7.0m model in the TT at the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO, Korea). The CWC test results were correlated with the results of the towing tank tests.s.

The bow wave breaking and the viscous interaction of stern wave are studied by simulating the free-surface flows. The Navier-Stokes equation is solved by a finite difference method in which the body-fitted coordinate system, the wall function and the triple-grid system are invoked. After validation, the calculations are extended to turbulent flows. The wave elevation at the Reynolds number of $10^4$ is much less than that at $10^6$ although the Froude number is the same. The numerical appearance of the sub-breaking waves is qualitatively supported by experimental observation. They are also applied to study the stern flow of S-103 for which extensive experimental data are available. Although the interaction between separation and the stern wave generation are not yet clear, the effects of the bow wave on the development of the boundary layer flows are concluded to be significant.
This paper presents an experimental and parametric study of a biomimetic fish robot actuated by the Lightweight Piezo-composite Actuator(LIPCA). The biomimetic aspects in this work are the oscillating tail beat motion and shape of caudal fin. Caudal fins that resemble fins of BCF(Body and Caudal fin) mode fish were made in order to perform parametric study concerning the effect of caudal fin characteristics on thrust production at an operating frequency range. The observed caudal fin characteristics are the shape, area, and aspect ratio. It was found that a high aspect ratio caudal fin contributes to high swimming speed. The fish robot was propelled by artificial caudal fins shaped after thunniform-fish and mackerel caudal fins, which have relatively high aspect ratio, produced swimming speed as high as 2.364 cm/s and 2.519 cm/s, respectively, for 300 Vpp input voltage excited at 0.9 Hz. Thrust performance of the biomimetic fish robot was examined by Strouhal number, Froude number, Reynolds number, and Net forward force.
Stream inflows induced by flood runoffs have a higher density than the ambient reservoir water because of a lower water temperature and elevated suspended sediment(SS) concentration. As the propagation of density currents that formed by density difference between inflow and ambient water affects reservoir water quality and ecosystem, an understanding of reservoir density current is essential for an optimization of filed monitoring, analysis and forecast of SS and nutrient transport, and their proper management and control. This study was aimed to quantify the characteristics of inflow density current including plunge depth($d_p$) and distance($X_p$), separation depth($d_s$), interflow thickness($h_i$), arrival time to dam($t_a$), reduction ratio(${\beta}$) of SS contained stream inflow for different flood magnitude in Daecheong Reservoir with a validated two-dimensional(2D) numerical model. 10 different flood scenarios corresponding to inflow densimetric Froude number($Fr_i$) range from 0.920 to 9.205 were set up based on the hydrograph obtained from June 13 to July 3, 2004. A fully developed stratification condition was assumed as an initial water temperature profile. Higher $Fr_i$(inertia-to-buoyancy ratio) resulted in a greater $d_p,\;X_p,\;d_s,\;h_i$, and faster propagation of interflow, while the effect of reservoir geometry on these characteristics was significant. The Hebbert equation that estimates $d_p$ assuming steady-state flow condition with triangular cross section substantially over-estimated the $d_p$ because it does not consider the spatial variation of reservoir geometry and water surface changes during flood events. The ${\beta}$ values between inflow and dam sites were decreased as $Fr_i$ increased, but reversed after $Fr_i$>9.0 because of turbulent mixing effect. The results provides a practical and effective prediction measures for reservoir operators to first capture the behavior of turbidity inflow.

The steady breakers at an infant stage are investigated through the numerical simulation. The appearing condition and characteristics of the sub-breaking waves are reviewed by analysing bow waves. The instability analysis is possibly done through the relationship between the free-surface curvature and circumferential force, which is obtained from the momentum equations. Navier-Stokes equations are solved by a finite difference method where the body-fitted coordinate system, the wall function and the advanced mesh system are invoked. The numerical result shows that the gradient of M/$U_s$ is greatly influenced by the Froude number and the decrease of M/$U_s$ indicates that the flows are unstable. Additionally flows with plunging or spilling are simulated successfully, but the application of breakers to the severely broken wave still remains to be settled in the future.

The added mass and the added moment of inertia of a hard chine hull for heave and pitch were calculated by strip method. For the $k_2$ coefficients, Hwang's values for the straight-framed sections were used and for $k_2$ coefficients Porter's values for ellipses were used in the calculation. Comparisons on added mass and added moment of inertia of hard chine hull with those of ordinary hull form were briefly discussed. The results of the calculation for hard Chine hull give greater valves than ordinary ships at zero Froude Number. Beam draft ratio seems to be much influenced on the added mass and added moment of inertia.

In this paper, the maximum scour depths at piers located in the Bo Cheong Stream, which is a tributary in the Geum River System, were calculated and compared using 24 local pier scour equations. The equations were classified as six groups by non-dimensional types of equations. The geometric data in the stream bed and pier data at San Seong, Yi Pyung and San Gye, which are IHP data collection stations, were utilized for applying the scour equations. The geometric data in the stream bed were obtained by analyzing the bed material sampled in three stations which are in the left side, middle and right side for stream direction. The maximum flow velocities at maximum flow depths which were measured from 1982 to 1991, were used as the hydraulic flow data. The pier data for predicting pier scour depths were measured in the fields. The maximum pier scour depths calculated using the equations were compared with the held scour depths measured in the streams or rivers in the world. Arunachalam, Shen-Karaki III, Jain-Fischer equations are selected as the proper local scour equations for predicting the maximum local scour depths at piers in the Bo Cheong Stream. Inglis-Lacey and Shen-Karaki II equations are applicable in case of rapid flows conditions in which Froude number is over 0.3. Froehlich, Laursen I, Laursen II, Neill, Melville equations are applicable in the slow flow conditions in which Froude number is less than 0.3. Blench equation or Inglis-Poona equation varies rapidly by changing Froude numbers. Therefore the equations should not be used without careful considerations in selecting the applicable ranges. The maximum local scour depths calculated using Sarma-Krishnamurthy, Ahmad, Coleman, Varzeliotis, Larras, Bata, Chitale, Venkatadri, Basik-Basamily-Ergun, U.S.G.S., Shen I equations are usually less than the scour depths measured in the fields.

CTD measurements were conducted in the Nakdong estuary on the several sections or along-plume and cross-plume directions in 1993 and 1994. Internal Froude number Fi=0.22-0.35 in ebb tides and 0.14 in flood tides suggest that Nakdong river plume may go farther seawards in the along-plume direction with little mixing with the adjacent sea water after the construction of Nakdong river barrier. From Dadae-Po to Gaduk-Do section of cross-plume direction, three cores of low salinity were found. The main plume outflows from the newly made channel by cutting Ulsuk-Do after the construction of barrier. The low salinity core found near Gaduk-Do is the plume patch advected by tidal currents. Rossby deformation radius varied with the tidal cycle so that Coriolis effect is strengthened in flood tides to deepen the isohalines westwards to the Gaduk-Do site. Internal wavelike shape was found in the section of cross-plume direction during ebb tides. Richardson number of the section suggests the possibility of forming internal wave but more precise observations are necessary.
An experimental study is performed in order to catch the characteristics of the flow field at arrested salt wedge, using a rectangular open channel. Arrested salt wedge is generally so stable that the observations are easy, but velocities and interfacial waves are measured with the aid of visualization method, by injection of fluorescent dyes. The density interface, which is defined as the zone of maximum density variation with depth, exists in about 0.5 cm below the visual interface, and vertical density profile is quite well satisfied with Homeborn model. Interfacial layer has high turbulent intensity and its thickness decreases as the overall Richardson number increases and has magnitude of roughly 17% of upper layer. Cross-sectional velocity distribution just shows the influence of a side-wall friction and in the upper layer vertical velocity profile also becomes uniformly as Reynolds number increases, but in the lower layer it shows nearly parabolic type. Supposes that we divide salt wedge into three domains, that is, river mouth, intermediate and tip zone, entertainment coefficient is small at the intermediate zone and large at the river mouth and the tip zone. River mouth or intermediate zone has comparatively stable interface and capillary wave therefore s produced and propagated downstream. On the other hand, tip zone is very unstable, cusping ripple or bursting ripple is then produced incessantly. Arrested salt wedge form is nearly linear and has no relation to densimetric Froude number and Reynolds number.
