  • This study deals with the analysis of the effectiveness of a safer belt in frontal crash. ATB, Articulated Total Body, program is used as a dynamics solver of the occupant model. ATB is a public code, however, the program is somewhat cumbersome to use due to lack of sufficient user interface. A preprocessor and a postprocessor are, therefore, developed for a user friendly graphic interface in Windows environment. Dialog boxes are used for an interface with GEBOD, Generator of Body Data, for human anthropometry and with ADAMS for vehicle dynamics. It is found through three test simulations that simulated results are in good agreement with those obtained by ATB. The effect of the initial slack of safety belt is investigated for frontal crash using the developed program.

  • A parallel multi-frontal solver is developed for finite element analysis of an arc-welding process, which entails phase evolution, heat transfer, and deformations of structure. We verify the code via comparison to a commercial code,SYSWELD. Attention is focused on the implementation of the parallel solver using MPI library, on the speedup by parallel computation, and on the effectiveness of the solver in welding application

  • With the advance of autonomous vehicle technology various sitting posture is possible like relax position (inclined seating posture). Parametric study was done with MADYMO, a mutibody dynamics solver, to investigate the effect of sitting posture in different frontal crash modes, full frontal, 40% offset, and angled rigid barrier crash as well as various impact speeds. Hybrid III 50th male and 5th female dummies were used to figure out the difference induced by occupant weight and dimension. Restraint system parameters complying to current safety protocols like NCAP are studied if they still work effectively in relax position which is feasible with autonomous vehicles.

  • The device simulator (BANDIS) which can analyze efficiently the electrical characteristics of the semiconductor devices under the three dimensional stationary conditions on the IBM PC was developed. Poisson, electon and hole continuity equations are discretized y te galerkin method using a tetrahedron as af finite element. The frontal solver which has exquisite data structures and advanced input/output functions is dused for the matrix solver which needs the highest cost in the three dimensional device simulation. The discretization method of the continuity equations used in BANDIS are compared with that of the scharfetter-gummel method used in the commercial three-dimensional device. To verify an accuracy and the efficiency of the discretization method, the simulation results of the PN junction diode and the BJT from BANDIS are compared with those of the commercial three-dimensiional device simulator such as DAVINCI. The maximum relative error within 2% and the average number of iterations needed for the convergence is decreased by more than 20%. The total simulation time of the BJT with 25542 nodes is decreased to about 60% compared with that of DAVINCI.

  • Numerical analysis which is based on finite element techniques, implicit Euler method and frontal solving algorithm was performed to study the effects of the crucible shape on the temperature of sapphire crystal and the shape of the melt/crystal interface in heat exchanger method. The computer simulation described here and effective to solving the heat transport phenomena with the transition of the interface shape from hemispherical to planar. In the work, various crucibles with differently shaped corners at their bottom are considered to improve the deflection of the melt/crystal interface. The shape of the crucible should be considered as one of the variables for the process optimization.

  • An implicit finite element implementation for Leblond's transformation plasticity constitutive equations, which are widely used in welded steel structure is proposed in the framework of parallel computing. The implementation is based upon the multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient and hyper elastic formulation. We examine the efficiency of parallel computation for the finite element analysis of a welded structure using domain-wise multi-frontal solver.

  • In this paper, an efficient two-level parallel domain decomposition algorithm is suggested to solve large-DOF structural problems. Each subdomain is composed of the coarse problem and local problem. In the coarse problem, displacements at coarse nodes are computed by the iterative method that does not need to assemble a stiffness matrix for the whole coarse problem. Then displacements at local nodes are computed by Multi-Frontal Sparse Solver. A parallel version of PCG(Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient Method) is developed to solve the coarse problem iteratively, which minimizes the data communication amount between processors to increase the possible problem DOF size while maintaining the computational efficiency. The test results show that the suggested algorithm provides scalability on computing performance and an efficient approach to solve large-DOF structural problems.

  • The numerical analysis of sound radiation by vibrating structure is a well known and mature technology used in many industries. Accurate methods based on the boundary or finite element method have been successfully developed over the last two decades and are now available in standard CAE tools. These methods are however known to require significant computational resources which, furthermore, very quickly increase with the frequency of interest. The low speed of most current methods is a main obstacle for a systematic use of acoustic CAE in industrial design processes. In this paper we are going to present a set of innovative techniques that significantly speed-up the calculation of acoustic radiation indicators (acoustic pressure, velocity, intensity and power; contribution vectors). The modeling is based on the well known combination of finite elements and infinite elements but also combines the following ingredients to obtain a very high performance: o a multi-frontal massively parallel sparse direct solver; o a multi-frequency solver based on the Krylov method; o the use of pellicular acoustic modes as a vector basis for representing acoustic excitations; o the numerical evaluation of Green functions related to the specific geometry of the problem under investigation. All these ingredients are embedded in the ACTRAN/AR CAE tool which provides unprecedented performance for acoustic radiation analysis. The method will be demonstrated on several applications taken from various industries.
