Water Lubrication Characteristics and Effect of Nano Particles based on the Substrate (기판 종류에 따른 물 윤활 특성 및 나노 입자의 영향)

  • In this work, we examine pure water and water with nanoparticles to investigate water lubrication characteristics and the effect of nanoparticles as lubricant additives for different substrates. We test carbon-based coatings and metals such as high-speed steel and stainless steel in pure deionized (DI) water and DI water with nanoparticles. We investigate water lubrication characteristics and the effect of nanoparticles based on the friction coefficient and wear rate for different substrates. The investigation reveals that nanoparticles enhance the friction and wear properties of high-speed steel and stainless steel. The friction coefficient and wear rate of both high-speed steel and stainless steel decreases in DI water with nanoparticles compared with the results in pure DI water. The presence of nanoparticles in water show good lubricating effect at the contact area for both high-speed steel and stainless steel. However, for carbon-based coatings, nanoparticles do not improve friction and wear properties. Rather, the friction coefficient and wear rate increases with an increase in the concentration of nanoparticles in case of water lubrication. Because carbon-based coatings already have good tribological properties in a water environment, nanoparticles in water do not contribute toward improving the friction and wear properties of carbon-based coatings.

  • The friction and wear characteristics of brake friction materials reinforced with aramid fiber, carbon fiber, glass fiber, and potassium titanate whiskers were investigated using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. In particular, the morphology of rubbing surfaces was carefully investigated to correlate the friction performance and properties of transfer films. The aramid fiber reinforced specimen showed severe oscillation of friction coefficient at low speed and low applied pressure. The carbon fiber reinforced specimen showing better friction stability exhibited uniform and stable transfer film than any other specimens. The glass fiber reinforced specimen showed unstable friction changes at high speed and high-applied pressure and the non-uniform transfer film was observed in both friction material and rotor surface. The potassium titanate whiskers reinforced specimen showed stable coherent transfer film. The wear test exhibited the potassium titanate whiskers reinforced specimen was lowest in wear amount and glass fiber reinforced specimen showed the severe wear.

  • This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano-oil with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and carbon nano-particles in the thrust slide-bearing of scroll compressors. Frictional loss in the thrust slide-bearing occupies a large part of total mechanical loss in scroll compressors. The characteristics of friction and anti-wear using nano-oil are evaluated using the thrust bearing tester for measuring friction surface temperature and the coefficient of friction at the thrust slide-bearing as a function of normal loads up to 4,000 N and orbiting speed up to 3,200 rpm. It is found that the coefficient of friction increases with decreasing orbiting speed and normal force. The friction coefficient of carbon nano-oil is 0.015, while that of pure oil is 0.023 under the conditions of refrigerant gas R-22 at the pressure of 5 bars. It is believed that carbon nano-particles can be coated on the friction surfaces and the interaction of nano-particles between surfaces can be improved the lubrication in the friction surfaces. Carbon nano-oil enhances the characteristics of the anti-wear and friction at the thrust slide-bearing of scroll compressors.

  • This paper shows mechanical properties and behaviors of macro- and micro-structures on friction stir welded specimen with 6061-T6 aluminum alloy plate. It apparently results in defect-free weld zone jointed at welding conditions like the traverse speed of 267mm/min, tool rotation speed of 2500rpm, pin inserted depth of 4.5mm and tilting angle of $2^{\circ}$ with tool dimensions such as tool pin diameter of 5mm, shoulder diameter of 15mm and pin length of 4.5mm. The tensile stress ${\sigma}_T=228MPa$ and the yield point ${\sigma}Y=141MPa$ are obtained at the condition of traverse speed of 267mm/min and tool rotation speed of 2500rpm. With the constant rotation speed, the higher traverse speed become, the higher tensile stress and yielding point become. Vickers hardness for welding zone profile were also presented.

  • A study of friction welding of high speed steel(SKH51) bar for blade side to carbon steel(STC3) bar for shank side was carried out experimentally through tensile test, hardness lest, microstructure, and acoustic emission (AR) test.   • This paper presents the traffic speed limit of heavy vehicles at each wind velocity region, which is based on their accident risk analysis under cross-wind. The variables for the accident risk analysis are overall height, overall length, intake weight, and friction coefficient of the road surface. It was confirmed from analysis results that the risk of overturning increased with higher overall height and length, and the risk of sliding decreased with higher intake weight. The risk of sliding was largest at the friction coefficient of 0.1, and the risk of overturning was lagest at friction coefficient more than 0.25. Finally, traffic speed limit was proposed by using the accident risk analysis.

  • Of all of pneumatic components utilized in the make up of pneumatic circuits on either automatic assembly machine or industrial equipment, the pneumatic cylinder is more oriented toward being a structural as well as a pneumatic member. The structural design must be based to a large degree on the end of application of the cylinder on the equipment it is operating. In this paper, design studies of a double-acting pneumatic cushion type cylinder with low-friction and high-speed driving have been developed. Of interest here is to investigate the structural analysis of cylinder tube, piston rod, end cover, and to analyze the buckling of piston rod. Also, a relief valve type cushion mechanism is considered. This cushion mechanism is found to be adequate under a high-speed driving of pneumatic cylinders.

  • The grain structure, dislocation density and second phase particles in various regions including the stir zone(SZ), thermo-mechanically affected zone(TMAZ), and heat affected zone(HAZ) of a friction stir weld 6.35mm thick aluminum 7075-T651 alloy were investigated and compared with the base metal. The microstruectures of nugget zone were compared according to tool rotation speeds and tool transition speeds. The hardness profiles of nugget zone were increased, while decreasing rotation speed and increasing welding speed. The optimal microstructure was gained at the low rotation speed 800rpm and th high welding speed 124mm/min. The nugget microstructures of fracture surface, transgranular dimple and quasicleavage type were showed different fracture type with the HAZ, shear fracture type.

  • The friction surfacing system which has been successfully developed in RIST has both position control and force control by using hydraulic cylinder. In friction surfacing process mechtrode rotation speed(N) and feeding speed($V_{z}$), travelling speed($V_{x,y}$) are of critical importance for the width and thickness of the coating. As a result of DOE with developed system, the main effect of coating thickness is a rotation speed of mechtrode.

  • Nonlinear seal friction in pneumatic cylinders can impede the performance of pneumatic systems designed for high precision positioning with favorable high speed actuation. The behaviour of an elastomeric piston seal in high speed pneumatic cylinders is analysed by nonlinear finite element analysis using ABAQUS. The contact pressures, stress and strain distributions and frictional forces of the piston seal are simulated with variation of interference fits, supply pressures, friction coefficients and piston rod velocities. The nonlinear finite element model of the piston seal is used to predict deformation of a seal, friction force and contact pressure distributions.
