In case of drilled shafts installed by drilling through soft overburden onto a strong rock, the piles can be regarded as end-bearing elements and their working load is determined by the safe working stress on the pile shaft at the point of minimum cross-section or by code of practice requirements. Drilled shafts drilled down for some depth into weak or weathered rocks and terminated within these rocks act partly as friction and partly as end-bearing piles. The base resistance component can contribute significantly to the ultimate capacity of the pile. However, the shaft resistance is typically mobilized at considerably smaller pile movements than that of the base. In addition, the base response can be adversely affected by any debris that is left in the bottom of the socket. The reliability of base response therefore depends on the use of a construction and inspection technique which leaves the socket free of debris. This may be difficult and costly to achieve, particularly in deep sockets, which are often drilled under water or drilling slurry. As a consequence of these factors, shaft resistance generally dominates pile performance at working loads. The efforts to improve the prediction of drilled shaft pile performance are therefore primarily concerned with the complex mechanisms of shaft resistance development. In this study, the numerical analyses are carried out to investigate the behavior characteristics of side of rock socketed drilled shafts varying the loading condition at the pile head. The difference of behavior characteristics of side resistance is also evaluated with the effects of modelling of asperity.
PHC piles demonstrate superior resistance to compression and bending moments, and their factory-based production enhances quality assurance and management processes. Despite these advantages that have resulted in widespread use in civil engineering and construction projects, the design process frequently relies on empirical formulas or N-values to estimate the soil-pile friction, which is crucial for bearing capacity, and this reliance underscores a significant lack of experimental validation. In addition, environmental factors, e.g., the pH levels in groundwater and the effects of seawater, are commonly not considered. Thus, this study investigates the influence of vibrating machine foundations on PHC pile models in consideration of the effects of varying pH conditions. Concrete model piles were subjected to a one-month conditioning period in different pH environments (acidic, neutral, and alkaline) and under the influence of seawater. Subsequent repeated direct shear tests were performed on the pile-soil interface, and the disturbed state concept was employed to derive parameters that effectively quantify the dynamic behavior of this interface. The results revealed a descending order of shear stress in neutral, acidic, and alkaline conditions, with the pH-influenced samples exhibiting a more pronounced reduction in shear stress than those affected by seawater.

The use of oyster shells is proposed as a substitute construction material for geotechnical applications. To investigate recycling possibility as a substitute of sand compaction pile (SCP) for oyster shells, the geotechnical characteristics including permeability and shear strength of crushed oyster shell, sand and crushed oyster shell-sand mixted soil. Experimental results show that the crushed oyster shells are lighter than sand in weight, and have similar characteristics on permeability to sand. The results of direct shear test show that the measured value of friction angle ${\Phi}$ of crushed oyster shell was lager than that of sand. It would be expected that more angular particles (crushed oyster shells) would interlock more thoroughly than rounded particles (send).

Reinforced twice than width of foundation with SIC under steel piles drived in cohesion soil and in the coal-limestone which heavily fractured. To analyze behaviour characteristic of steel piles, load transfer test was performed to steel piles attached with strain gauges to axial direction. After it passed 49days, dynamic load test was performed to set-up effect of steel piles bearing capacity. The results of test were compared to each other. According to the results, as the skin friction of steel pile was on the same condition, end bearing capacity of steel piles established on SIC solid of cemented milk in cohesion soil was three times than steel piles established on SIG solid of cemented milk in heavily fractured coal- limestone. After piles were driven and passes 49days, in case of piles on SIG solid of comented milk in cohesion soil the increaes of allowable bearing capacity was 442.9% and allowable bearing capacity of piles on SIG solid of cemented milk in heavily fractured coal-limestone increased 22.4%.
In this study, partial drilled shafts (Bottom Cast-in-place Concrete pile) were applied to the pilot test site to ensure the bearing capacity; we used the skin friction force in the IGM to analyze the feasibility of the application of IGM theory. The soil characteristics were analyzed in cohesive, non-smear, and smooth conditions for the application of the IGM theory via geotechnical investigation and measurement of the disturbance and surface roughness. Static load and load transfer tests were conducted to calculate the allowable bearing capacity and the skin friction force by depth. The skin friction force increased with increase in the depth and standard settlement, showing a very high correlation. In addition, because the unconfined strength ($q_u$), which is the most important parameter in the cohesive IGM, cannot be measured in a weathered granite area, the static load and load transfer test results and the N value were used to obtain $q_u$.
In this study, the axial stiffness of reinforcing piles (Kvr) for the vertical extension remodeling structures was estimated through 3D finite element analysis. In the computation of the minimum required axial stiffness of reinforcing piles, proposed maximum axial stiffness of old and deteriorated existing piles (Kve) based on theoretical and experimental approaches will be applied. Through this, the required increase rate of axial stiffness of reinforcing piles in order to support the increased structural loading was proposed for end-bearing and friction piles by different slenderness ratio (L/D). The numerical model was validated by comparing the computed results with actual field measurements. Based on the computed results, it was concluded that the end-bearing reinforcing pile needs 44% - 67% increase in axial stiffness to deal with the deterioration of existing piles and support the additional structural load due to vertical extension remodeling.
The prediction of driving stresses in piles is necessary for optimum selection of driving hammers, better design of precast piles, enact assessment of drivabilities and complete description of piling specifications. However, the existing pile-driving formulas based on the theory of Newtonian impact have some defects and shortcomings; the numerical method by the wave equation analysis using electronic computer usually Involves various uncertainties and limitations which can yield erroneous outcomes because it employs soil constants of which the nature is unknown as essential parameters and ignores the effect of residual stresses set up in the pile .after each hammer blow; and the electronic measuring technique needs extra time and expense. The method developed herein is presented for the purpose of giving field engineers a reliable and convenient analytical procedure for the prediction of driving stresses along the full length of pile using the most effetive parameters without resort to electronic computer. This method is based on the fundamental mechanics of stress waves in elastic rods and takes into account the effect of residual stresses induced by reversed friction in piles.

The influence of anchor slope on behavior of sheet pile is analysed by results of model test. It can be seen that the larger inclination of anchor causes more causes more increases of the horizontal and vertical deflection of wall, but the bending moment is less influenced by the inclination of anchor. The negative friction against vertical settlement of wall has the yielding point at the excavation level of 0.71-0.80 H. The redistribution of earth pressure on the sheet pile with dredging must be considered by soil-arching. The zero pressure point from the toe of wall is 20% higher than that of the Free Earth Support Method. It is also observed that the angle of failure planes to major principal plane is larger than the angle of $45^{\circ}+{\phi}/2$.

The main purpose of this study is to analyze and evaluate the feasibility of ligthweight pavement system with pile foundation on soft soil by laboratory small chamber test. In order to verify the stability of lightweight pavement system, the 1/30 scaled downed model system was tested at lab. The soft soil condition was simulated and group piles for skin friction resistance were used. Within the limited lab test, the settlements of pavement system were 0.86 mm for Case A, 0.70 mm for Case B, and 0.50 mm for Case C. The converted maximum settlement differential settlement were 25.8 mm and 10.8 mm. These values meet the inside of specification of Bridge Design Guide in Korea. The use of lightweight pavement systems on soft soils could be an alternative construction method on soft soils to reduce the challenges of conventional design and constructions.
Bearing capacity of pile foundations in cold region is dominated by adfreeze bond strength between surrounding soil and pile perimeter. Adfreeze bond strength is considered to be the most important design parameter for foundations in cold region. Many studies in last 50 years have been conducted to analyze characteristics of adfreeze bond strength. However, most studies have been performed under constant temperature and normal stress conditions in order to analyze affecting factors like soil type, pile material, loading speed, etc. In this study, both freezing temperature and normal stress acting on pile surface were considered to be primary factors affecting adfreeze bond strength, while other factors such as soil type, pile material and loading speed were predefined. Direct shear box was used to measure adfreeze bond strength between Joomoonjin sand and aluminium because it is easy to work for various roughness. Test was performed with temperatures of > $0^{\circ}C$, $-1^{\circ}C$, $-2^{\circ}C$, $-5^{\circ}C$, and $-10^{\circ}C$ and vertical confining pressures of 1atm, 2atm, and 3atm. Based on the test results, the effects of temperature and vertical stress on adfreeze bond strength were analyzed. The test results showed that adfreeze bond strength increases with decreased temperature and increased vertical stress. It was also noted that two types of distinct sections exist, owing to the rate of increase of adfreeze bond strength along the change of freezing temperature: 1)rapidly increasing section and 2)gradually decreasing section. In addition, the results showed that a main factor affecting adfreeze bond strength switches from friction angle to adhesion as freezing temperature decreases.
