Axial behavior of tapered piles is affected by taper angle, stress state of soils, soil frictional angle and pile-soil interface friction angle. In this paper, a series of model pile load tests were performed using a calibration chamber in order to investigate the effect of taper angle on the axial response of cast-in-place tapered piles in sand. According to results of the tests, as taper angle of piles increased, the shaft load capacity of piles increased but its base load capacity decreased. The unit base load capacity of piles increased with increasing taper angle for medium sand but decreased for dense sand. The ratio of shaft to total load capacity increased with increasing taper angle and with decreasing relative density of soils. The test results also showed that total load capacity per unit pile volume increased with increasing taper angle for medium sand, but it decreased for dense sand. Therefore, it can be stated that tapered piles are economically more beneficial for medium sand than for dense sand.

Recently the Permanent Uni-wall System (PUS) has been developed which improved the disadvantage of the Cast-In-Place Concrete Pile (CIP) and could be used as permanent retaining wall. In this study, joints between PUS and floor systems were developed. From analyses of the characteristics of design and construction of PUS, shear friction reinforcements with couplers were adopted for shear design of the joints. Twelve types of joints were developed which were classified according to the types of floor structures, wale, and piles of PUS. Two typical joints were tested and the joints showed satisfactory behaviors on the points of shear strength, stiffness, and serviceability. Especially the shear strengths were much higher than the design strengths due to the shear keys which were by-products in splicing shear reinforcements. However, the shear strength of the joint is recommended to be designed by only shear friction reinforcement because shear key is not reliable and too brittle.

In this study, static load test and dynamic load test were performed to evaluate pile-filling material (ZA-Soil) of soil-cement injected precast pile method which was developed by using the ash of circulating fluidized boiler as a stimulant for alkali activation reaction of blast furnace slag. As a result of the static load test, the allowable bearing capacity of pile was 1,350 kN, which was the same as the result of using ordinary portland cement. And total settlement was 6.97 mm, and net settlement was 1.48 mm. These are similar to the total settlement, 7.825 mm, and net settlement, 2.005 mm of ordinary portland cement. As a result of the dynamic load test and CAPWAP analysis, the skin friction was 375.0 kN, the end bearing capacity was 3,045.9 kN, and the allowable bearing capacity was 1,368.36 kN. These results are similar to the results of using ordinary portland cement as pile-filling material.
The pressure penetrating steel pipe pile method which can be constructed in a narrow space using the hydraulic jack is used on the foundation reinforcement, extension of the structure and basement, restoration of the differential settlement etc.. This method is possible to construct in narrow areas and low story height, the non-noise and non-vibration works, and it is possible for the construction site to be clean without slime. And it is possible to confirm the bearing capacity of pile due to penetrating the pile with the compression load of hydraulic jack. In this study, the static load test with the load-transfer test was carried out to investigate the bearing behavior characteristics of the pressure penetrating steel pipe pile. Four series of static load test were executed to investigate the variation of bearing behavior of the pressure penetrating steel pipe pile. As a result of these tests, the allowable load of the pressure penetrating steel pipe was evaluated more than 637 kN, and the shaft resistance corresponding to 81~86% of each applied load was mobilized with only a small portion of the base resistance acting. And it was also evaluated that the unit skin friction was mobilized to maximum value after two months.

In this study, displacement, deformation, and stability according to change of cohesion and internal friction angle were investigated through elasto-plastic method, finite-element method, and in-site experiment when excavating soft ground using sheet pile. The results of the study were as follows : 1. The horizontal displacement was 5.5% of the excavation depth by the elasto-plastic method and 3.9% of the excavation depth by the on-site experiment at the final excavation depth(GL-8.Om) on the condition of double stair strut after excavating GL-6.Om. 2. Relationships between cohesion(c) and internal friction angle $({\varphi})$ when safety factor to the penetration depth was 1.2 is shown in the following equations : (a) c= -O.0086$({\varphi})$+ O.3(D=3m) and (b) c=-0.00933$({\varphi})$+0.14(D=4m). 3. The results of elasto-plastic method and the experiment show that possible excavation depth was GL-6.Om after setting single stair strut in a short period in terms of possibility of carrying out on the condition of experimental site on the contrary general reinforcement method, setting double stair strut after excavating GL-4.0m. 4. After setting the strut, distribution of the horizontal displacement had concentrated on the excavation base and possible local failure which the shear strain caused decreased by the strut reinforced. 5. After setting strut, displacement of sheet pile was decreased by half, the limit of stable excavation depth of ground was GL-8.Om, and the maximum horizontal displacement at the GL-8.Om was 1.6% of excavation depth by the elasto-plastic method, 0.7% of excavation depth by the finite-element method.
Dynamic and static load tests are conducted in four construction sites by using steel pipe piles(SPP) and concrete piles to compare differences of load bearing mechanism. Steel pipe piles are instrumented with electric strain gages and are subject to dynamic load tests during driving. The damage of strain gages attached is checked simultaneously. Static load test is also conducted on the same piles after two to seven days' elapse. Then load-settlement behavior and shaft and/or tip resistances are measured. As a result, the allowable bearing capacity calculated by the Davisson's offset method of CAPWAP analysis shows 2~33% larger than that of static load test. The average value of allowable bearing capacity of static load test is closer to the allowable capacity obtained at the safety factor of 2.5 applied on ultimate bearing capacity than to the one obtained from the Davisson's offset method. The analysis of strain gage readings shows that unit skin friction increases with depth. Furthermore, the friction mobilized around the 1~2m above the pile tip considerably contributes to the total shaft resistance.
The mechanical behavior of a micropile due to horizontal load has not yet clearly identified in Korea. It has generally estimated from that of a traditional pile because there is no standard method even though it has shorter length. To tell the truth, its behavior is very different from a traditional pile's. Specifically, it is general fact that horizontal resistance of earth is one of the main factors to control the mechanical behavior of micropile. To this reason, a laboratory model has been made in this study to estimate the behavior of a micropile which loaded increasingly horizontally. The laboratory model has been designed to estimate both the behavior of load to displacement and skin friction to displacement. And the analysis of the latter was compared with the solution of strain wedge model. In the end, it was proved that the mechanical behavior of a micropile should be estimated from considering the horizontal resistance of earth.

For a fixed jacket type offshore structure directly supported by the seabed, the structural behavior of offshore structure depends on the soil properties. Soil properties affect on the stiffness of the piles and the boundary condition in the structural analysis. The structural analysis is performed using PSI (Pile-Soil Interaction) suggested in the code and design rule. PSI analysis of the jacket structure is carried out after various soil types are selected according to the soil properties like internal friction angle, undrained shear strength, unit weight and so on. Three types of soil are selected by varying strength for a clay and sand, respectively. The structural analysis of the jacket structure is performed using these soils. The results about axial and lateral reaction force and the stress and displacement on the structure are compared. As a results, the structural response is smaller as the soil becomes more stiff. In conclusion, it is confirmed that the structural response of fixed jacket type offshore platform supported by seabed is sensitive to the change of soil properties.
The driven pile has environmental problems such as vibration and noise. Especially, if the site consists of gravel, cobble and weather rock, the driven pile can not be applied. Therefore, the application of the drilled shafts is increasing in Korea. However, the bearing capacity values by the suggested theoretical formulas are generally considered too conservative. In this paper, static load tests for the rock socketed drilled shaft at Gwangandaero and Suyeong3hogyo are performed and in order to estimate the side friction of the shaft, strain gauges are applied. The bearing capacities from the field test data and the bearing capacity values by the theoretical formula are compared. Even the static load tests didn't reach to the ultimate bearing capacity condition, and all the measured bearing capacity values were higher than those by the theoretical formulas. The field data also showed that the major bearing capacities were not due to end bearings but side friction resistances. Based on the above results, several suggestions are proposed for the drilled shaft design.
The numerical analysis on PHC piles socketed into weathered rocks through sandy soil layers was conducted to propose the table solution or the chart solution to obtain the mobilization capacity. The mobilization capacity was determined at the settlement of 5% pile diameter and applied a safety factor of 3.0. In order to utilize the excellent compressive strength of the PHC pile effectively, it is recommended that the allowable bearing capacity of ground would be designed to be more than the long-term allowable compressive pile load. A procedure for determining an allowable pile capacity for PHC piles socketed into weathered rocks through sandy soil layers is given by the sum of the allowable skin friction of the sandy soil layer and the weathered rock layer and the allowable end bearing capacity of the weathered rock layer. The design efficiency of the PHC pile is about 85% at the reasonable design stage in the verification of the newly proposed method. Thus, long-term allowable compressive load (Pall) level of PHC piles can be utilized in the optimal design stage.
