Atomic force microscopy/friction force microscopy (AFM/FFM) techniques are increasingly used for tribological studies of engineering surfaces at scales, ranging from atomic and molecular to microscales. These techniques have been used to study surface roughness, adhesion, friction, scratching/wear, indentation, detection of material transfer, and boundary lubrication and for nanofabrication/nanomachining purposes. Micro/nanotribological studies of single-crystal silicon, natural diamond, magnetic media (magnetic tapes and disks) and magnetic heads have been conducted. Commonly measured roughness parameters are found to be scale dependent, requiring the need of scale-independent fractal parameters to characterize surface roughness. Measurements of atomic-scale friction of a freshly-cleaved highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite exhibited the same periodicity as that of corresponding topography. However, the peaks in friction and those in corresponding topography were displaced relative to each other. Variations in atomic-scale friction and the observed displacement has been explained by the variations in interatomic forces in the normal and lateral directions. Local variation in microscale friction is found to correspond to the local slope suggesting that a ratchet mechanism is responsible for this variation. Directionality in the friction is observed on both micro- and macro scales which results from the surface preparation and anisotropy in surface roughness. Microscale friction is generally found to be smaller than the macrofriction as there is less ploughing contribution in microscale measurements. Microscale friction is load dependent and friction values increase with an increase in the normal load approaching to the macrofriction at contact stresses higher than the hardness of the softer material. Wear rate for single-crystal silicon is approximately constant for various loads and test durations. However, for magnetic disks with a multilayered thin-film structure, the wear of the diamond like carbon overcoat is catastrophic. Breakdown of thin films can be detected with AFM. Evolution of the wear has also been studied using AFM. Wear is found to be initiated at nono scratches. AFM has been modified to obtain load-displacement curves and for nanoindentation hardness measurements with depth of indentation as low as 1 mm. Scratching and indentation on nanoscales are the powerful ways to screen for adhesion and resistance to deformation of ultrathin fdms. Detection of material transfer on a nanoscale is possible with AFM. Boundary lubrication studies and measurement of lubricant-film thichness with a lateral resolution on a nanoscale have been conducted using AFM. Self-assembled monolyers and chemically-bonded lubricant films with a mobile fraction are superior in wear resistance. Finally, AFM has also shown to be useful for nanofabrication/nanomachining. Friction and wear on micro-and nanoscales have been found to be generally smaller compared to that at macroscales. Therefore, micro/nanotribological studies may help def'me the regimes for ultra-low friction and near zero wear.
The present experimental and numerical investigations are performed on the characteristics of transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients have been measured for the fully devel-oped flow of water and that of 0.2% CMC-water solution at a inner cylinder rotational speed of 0∼600 rpm, respectively. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure losses to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. The increasing rate of skin-friction coefficient due to the rotation is uniform for laminar flow regime, whereas it is suddenly reduced for transitional flow regime and, then, it is gradually decreased for turbulent flow regime.
An interlaboratory wear testing was performed in order to understand the friction behaviors and the wear mechanisms of the sintered composites. The specimens were the sintered bronze matrix composites having various contents of friction additives, friction control agents and reinforcements. The variation of the wear characteristics according to the constituents of the composites as well as the wear conditions was investigated by SEM, EPMA, OM, the hardness testing and the measurement of friction. The specimen having glass fiber as the matrix reinforcement showed a remarkable increase in wear resistance as increasing the content of glass fiber. Graphite particles in the composites exhibited the lubricating effect and also resulted in the lowering strength of the matrix. Addition of Mo powder to the composites led to the deterioration of wear properties at the room temperature, however, an enhanced wear properties were obtained in the containing Mo at an elevated temperature.

The present experimental and numerical investigations are performed for the characteristics of transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The flow field of an annulus has been numerically solved using a finite volume method. The pressure losses and Skin-friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of water and $0.2{\%}$ aqueous solution of sodium carboximethy1 cellulose (CMC), respectively at inner cylinder rotational speed of $0{\~}600rpm$. Consequently the critical(axial-flow) Reynolds number decreases as the rotational speed increases. Thus, the rotation of inner cylinder promotes the early occurrence of transition due to the onset of Taylor vortices.
Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a complex process with several mutually interdependent parameters. A slight difference from known settings may lead to imperfections in the stirred zone. These inhomogeneities affect on the mechanical properties of the FSWed joints. In order to prevent the failure of the welded joint it is necessary to detect the most critical defects non-destructive. Especially critical defects are wormhole and lack of penetration (LOP), because of the difficulty of detection. Online thermography is used process-accompanying for defect detecting. A thermographic camera with a fixed position relating to the welding tool measures the heating-up and the cool down of the welding process. Lap joints with sound weld seam surfaces are manufactured and monitored. Different methods of evaluation of heat distribution and intensity profiles are introduced. It can be demonstrated, that it is possible to detect wormhole and lack of penetration as well as surface defects by analyzing the welding and the cooling process of friction stir welding by passive online thermography measurement. Effects of these defects on mechanical properties are shown by tensile testing.
Three-dimensional finite element analysis is performed to study the temperature distribution phenomenon of TIG assisted friction stir welding (TAFSW) between dissimilar plates (Al 6061-T6 and stainless steel 304). TAFSW is a solid-state welding process that integrates TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) into a friction stir welding (FSW), to preheat the harder material ahead of FSW tool during welding. In order to facilitate the industrial application of welding, 3D numerical modeling of heat transfer has been carried out applying Finite Element Method (FEM). The temperature distribution due to heat generation during TAFSW on dissimilar materials joint is analysed using in-house solver. Moving heat source along with frictional heat between the work specimens and tool surface is considered to calculate the heat input. The analytical model used predicts successfully the maximum welding temperatures that occur on the dissimilar materials during TAFSW. Comparison with the infra red camera and thermocouple measurement results shows that the results from the current numerical simulation have good agreement with the measured data.

The seepage flow has been investigated conducting laboratory experiments mainly in order to determine the relation of seepage flow friction factor against Reynolds number. The apparatus of seepage flow measurements has the water flow almost horizontaly. Several sets of experiments were carried out, and various flow conditions were obtained in each set of flow. To cover wide range of flow conditions, used were various materials of different measurement sizes and various stages of water discharge in the seepage flow tests. Shape factor equation was developed using existing data, and based on the present laboratory data, an explicit equation was developed for the estimation of friction factor of seepage flow in the range of Reynolds number from about 1 to about 600. The same equation is expected for the flow condition of Reynolds number over 600, considering the trend of friction factor distribution.
The CIIR blends with SBR, NBR and BR were prepared with various mixing ratios. The mechanical and physical properties of these blends, such as frictional coefficient, abrasion resistance, compression set, and specific gravity, were measured. In the permanent compression set measurement, the blends at the composition of 75 wt% CIIR showed the highest value, which means the lowest resistance to deformation. As SBR, NBR and BR blends with CIIR, the coefficient of friction of the mixtures showed a tendency to decrease in arithmetic average. In the case of blending CIIR with BR in order to increase the friction force, the negative effect due to reduction in abrasion resistance was greater than the positive effect of the improvement of the traction force caused by increasing friction coefficient.
A valve assembly used in nuclear power plants must be qualified and supervised. New technical standards such as ASME QME-1 2007 particularly require detailed qualification using experiment and analysis. Particularly, diagnostic tests and engineering studies are required for qualification of ASME QME-1 2007. Among these studies, the research on the measurement of friction coefficient and packing stress is important. The irregular change of packing stress along the stroke distance occurs because of the abnormal phenomenon, which must be found and studied with quantitative methods. Packing stress should be analyzed conservatively through experimentation and analysis. In this study, various formulas were applied to measure and calculate coefficient of friction and packing stress. This study can be used in relation to qualification and supervision of packing materials. And the calculation using static diagnosis test can be used to find the packing frictional force in dynamic diagnosis test with flow pressure in a pipe. This study has made it possible to reliably consider packing frictional force generated in a valve body. And so, it is believed that more margin can be secured when evaluating the capacity of valve actuator by applying the accurate frictional force generated in the valve assembly.

In this study, the correction process of stress-strain curves obtained from hot compression test is introduced since the barreling induced by friction and adiabatic heat generation induced by plastic work occur under high strain rate. A shear friction factor was quantitatively estimated by measuring the dimension of barreling and temperature rise due to adiabatic heat generation was directly measured during compression test. Thereafter, the stress-strain curves were re-evaluated by introducing several equations to correct the effects of the friction and temperature rise. It was found that adiabatic factor at strain rate of 10/s is in the range of about 0.5 to 0.75 for Nimonic 80A and decreases as the assigned temperature increases.
