This study has been assessed the influence of applying sewage sludge to soil amendments on the sorption properties, and leaching potential of three commonly used organophosphorus pesticides, Diazinon, Fenitrothion, and Chlorpyrifos. A sandy soil with a low content of organic carbon was treated with sewage sludge with a ratio sandy soil sludge ratio of 30:1. The sorption was determined with the batch equilibrium technique. The sorption isotherms could be described by Freundlich equation. The Freundlich constant, K value which measures sorption capacity, were 3.97, 9.94, 22.48 for Diazinon, Fenitrothion, Chlorpyrifos in non-amended soil. But in amended soil, K value was 12.58, 28.47, and 61.21 for Diazinon, Fenitrothion, and Chlorpyrifos. The overall effect of sewage sludge addition to soil was to increase pesticides adsorption, due to the high sorption capacity of the organic matter. The effect of sludge on the leaching of pesticides in the soil was studied using packed soil columns. Total recoveries of pesticides in soil and leachate with leaching in soil column, were in the range of about 73∼84%, was reduced with the passage of time. Diazinon moved more rapidly than Chlorpyrifos in the unamended soil due to greater sorption and lower water solubility of Chlorpyrifos. Total amounts of pesticides leached from the sewage sludge amended soils were significantly reduced when compared with unamended soils. This reduction may be mainly due to and increase in sorption in amended soils, as a consequence of the increase in the organic matter content.
In this study, hybrid adsorbents (SS) were prepared by mixing spent coffee grounds (SCG) and sericite, a kind of clay minerals, to adsorb Pb(II) from an aqueous solution. In FT-IR analyses, the main functional groups of SS adsorbents were O-H, C=O and C-N groups. The specific surface area, cation exchange capacity and the pore diameter of SS were larger than those of using SCG and sericite. Formation conditions of the SS adsorbent were the optimum pyrolysis temperature of $300^{\circ}C$, SCG : sericite ratio of 8 : 2, and particle size of 0.3 mm. Langmuir adsorption isotherm was more suitable than Freundlich one, and the maximum adsorption capacity was reached 44.42 mg/g. As a result of the adsorption thermodynamic analysis, the adsorption of Pb(II) onto SS was the physical adsorption and exothermic process in nature. The regeneration of SS adsorbent using distilled water showed 88~92% recovery and the active site of SS adsorbent decreased with increasing the reuse cycle time. As a result, SS adsorbent showed that it can be used to remove Pb(II) easily, inexpensively and efficiently without any pre-treatment from aqueous solutions.
Bentonite has low hydraulic conductivity and high sorption capacity to limit hazardous heavy metals migration, and thus it has been considered as a liner material for the landfill of hazardous wastes. With a domestic bentonite sorption tests were carried out to investigate the adsorption isotherm and the effect of solution chemistry and temperature on adsorption. Freundlich isotherm was applied to fit the experimental data of lead adsorption, which fitted them well. Freundlich constants and correlation coefficient were calculated to be $K_{F}$\;=\;1.14$, n = 1.70, and $r^{2}\;=\;0.99$, respectively. The distribution coefficients($K_{d}$) for the adsorption of lead decreased with increasing initial lead concentration. The IL increased with increasing the pH of solution and sharply increased at pH > 7, which was attributed to the precipitation of lead species. The IL decreased with increasing the ion strength of solution. The $K_{d}$ gave a small increase with the concentration of ${SO_4}^{-2}$, whereas it had a nearly constant level with the concentration of ${HCO_3}^{-}$ in solution. An increase in the temperature of experimental solution increased the $K_{d}$.
In this study, the adsorption behavior from aqueous solution as well as kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of Acid Black 1 were investigated through batch reaction using coconut shell based granular steam activated carbon. The effects of various adsorption parameters such as pH, initial concentration, contact time, temperature were studied. To confirm the effect of pH, pHpzc measurements were analyzed followed by measuring removal efficiencies of Acid Black 1 at the pH range from 3 to 11. Experimental equilibrium adsorption data were fitted using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption isotherm. The conformity of adsorption reaction for pseudo first and second order model were evaluated through kinetic analysis. Values of enthalpy change and activation energy were also investigated through thermodynamic analysis and it was confirmed that the adsorption process was endothermic. The spontaneity of adsorption process was evaluated using the values of entropy and Gibbs free energy changes.

This study was performed to investigate adsorption characteristics of MTBE and Cd depending upon types of clay minerals md their physicochemical properties. The adsorption characteristics were examined by batch adsorption test on various experimental parameters such as adsorption time, ratio of solution to soil, concentration of contaminants, content of organic matter, pH, and zeta potential. The adsorption efficiency of MTBE or Cd for three types of clays decreased in response to the increase of the ratio of solution to soil whereas their adsorbed amounts increased. MTBE was greatly adsorbed in the decreasing order of vermiculite, bentonite, and CTAB-bentonite while Cd was adsorbed in the decreasing order of bentonite, vermiculite, and CTA-bentonite. An equilibrium isotherm for MTBE was well fitted to Freundlich plotting whereas that for Cd was closely corresponded to Langmuir isotherm. The adsorbed amount of MTBE on bentonite and vermiculite showed the maximum at 1% and 5% of humic acid, thereafter diminished while the adsorbed amount of MTBE on CTAB-bentonite increased in proportion to humic acid. Conversely, the adsorbed amount of Cd on the addition of humic acid continued to increase regardless of types of adsorbents. For all types of adsorbents, adsorbed quantity and adsorption efficiency of Cd have been coincidently increased at pH 8 and they were further enhanced at pH 10 showing 90% adsorption efficiency. Upon pH rose, the zeta potential on each adsorbent began to decrease, while increasing Cd concentration led to decline of zeta potential, which in turn ascribed to lowering dispersion stability that could consequently enhance adsorption capability.

Activated carbon has been widely used in water and wastewater treatment for removal of trace organics. The objective of this study was to define adsorption characteristics of trihalomethane(THM) on granular activated carbon(GAC) surfaces by laboratory experiments. Synthetic samples were prepared by adding chloroform into distilled and deionized water. The experiments conducted were a batch run and isotherm studies with five different temperature-pH levels. Adsorption of THM on GAC at an equilibrium condition was well described by the Freundlich isotherm equation. Lower temperature favored the adsorption, but the effect of pH was negligible. Utilizing the results of a batch run and the isotherm results, three parameters, mass transfer coefficient, pore diffusion coefficient, and surface diffusion coefficient, were evaluated by comparing with simulation results of an adsorption model. The results also showed that the pore diffusion was much greater than the surface diffusion.
An ubiquitous bacterium, Pseudomonar cepacia KH410 was isolated from fresh water plant root and identified. Adsorption of heavy metals of lead, cadmium and copper by this strain was investigated. Optimal conditions foradsorption was 1.0 dry g-biomass, at pH 4.0 and temperature of $40^{\circ}C$. Adsorption equilibrium reached max-imum after 120 min in 1000 mg/l metal solutions. The adsorption capacity (K) of lead was 5.6 times higher thancadmium and 4.0 times higher than that of copper. Adsorption of lead was applicable for Langmuir modelwhereas Freundlich model for cadmium and copper, respectively. Adsorption strength (1/n) of heavy metal ionswere in the order of lead>copper>cadmium. Uptake capacity of lead, cadmium and copper by dried cell was83.2,42.0,65.2 mg/g-biomass, respectively. Effective desorption was induced 0.1 M HCI for lead and 0.1 $HNO_3$ for cadmium and copper. Pretreatment to increase ion strength was the most effective with 0.1 M KOH.Uptake by immobilized cell was 77.8,58.5,71.2 mg/g-biomass for lead, cadmium and copper, respectively. Theimmobilized cell was more effective than ion exchange resin on removal of heavy metals in solution containinglight metals.
We investigated possible application of waste ferrite in treating Cd and Pb in wastewater. Adsorption of Cd and Pb on Mn-Ferrite are influenced by several controlling factors such as contact time, heavy metal concentrations, pH and temperature. Both Cd and Pb achieved adsorption equilibrium within 5 minutes. Based upon this kinetic data, 24 hours of contact time was allowed for other experiment. The adsorption of Cd and Pb was high at high pH and high ion concentrations. The reaction was also affected by temperature. Adsorption isotherms fits well with the Freundlich isotherm equation. pH is the main controlling factor in Cd, Pb adsorption on the Mn-ferrite. Cd showed S type adsorption curve while Pb showed sorption edges, depending on the Pb concentrations.
In this study, molecular size distribution of natural organic matter (NOM) after ozonation was measured and its effect on adsorption capacity of activated carbon was investigated. According to the results, the molecular size of NOM was limitedly changed. Specifically, the molecular size of NOM between 5,000 to 10,000 Da were slightly decreased with increasing ozone doses. The adsorption capacity after ozonation was evaluated using Freundlich isotherm with ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) which simulated the multi components adsorption. Further, mini-column test was conducted. The Freundlich constant, K was reduced after ozonation and the non-adsorbable fraction was increased with ozonation. However, no correlation between K and ozone doses was found. The present study also agreed with the correlation between adsorption capacity and pore size characteristics of activated carbon.
Batch adsorption studies were carried out for equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters for quinoline yellow adsorption by granular activated carbon ($8{\times}30mesh$, $1,578m^2/g$) with varying the operating variables like initial concentration, contact time and temperature. Equilibrium adsorption data were fitted into Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms. From estimated Langmuir constant ($R_L=0.0730{\sim}0.0854$), Freundlich constant (1/n = 0.2077~0.2268), this process could be employed as effective treatment for removal of quinoline yellow. From calculated Temkin constant (B = 15.759~21.014 J/mol) and Dubinin-Radushkevich constant (E = 1.0508~1.1514 kJ/mol), this adsorption process is physical adsorption. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption process were found to confirm to the pseudo second order model with $r^2$ > 0.99 for all concentrations and temperatures. Thermodynamic parameters like activation energy, change of free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were also calculated to predict the nature adsorption. The activation energy value (+35.137 kJ/mol) and enthalpy change (35.03 kJ/mol) indicated endothermic nature of the adsorption process. Entropy change (+134.38 J/mol K) showed that increasing disorder in process. Free energy change found that the spontaneity of process increased with increasing adsorption temperature.
