In this paper, we propose a novel differential equation method for designing a total internal reflection (TIR) LED lens with double freeform surfaces. A complete set of simultaneous differential equations for the method is derived from the condition for minimizing the Fresnel loss, illumination models, Snell’s Law of ray propagation, and a new constraint on the incident angle of a ray on the light-exiting surface of the lens. The last constraint is essential to complete the set of simultaneous differential equations. By adopting the TIR structure and applying the condition for minimizing the Fresnel loss, it is expected that the proposed TIR LED lens can have a high luminous flux efficiency, even though its beam-spread angle is narrow. To validate the proposed method, three TIR LED lenses with beam-spread angles of less than 22.6° have been designed, and their performances evaluated by ray tracing. Their luminous flux efficiencies could be obviously increased by at least 35% and 5%, compared to conventional LED lenses with a single freeform surface and with double freeform surfaces, respectively.
CF(Circular Fresnel) POF(Plastic Optical Fiber) daylighting system is a beam daylighting system utilizing solar direct beam radiation. In this study, a CF POF daylighting system has been introduced, developed and applied to KIER test buildings. The CF POF daylighting system consists of three parts: light collector, light transmitter and light diffuser. The light collector includes a Circular Fresnel lens focusing solar direct illuminance by sun tracking. The light transmitter contains the POF cable which has light transmission loss of 4.5% per meter. The light diffuser has about 80% diffuser efficiency. This study aims to evaluate of POF daylighting system performance. At the results of a CFPOF system performance evaluation, the theoretical CFPOF system efficiency was 41.9% and the actual CFPOF system efficiency at the KIER test building was 37.5%. The difference was due partly to the connecting efficiency.

Measuring the diffraction loss for high frequencies, long distances, and large diffraction angles is difficult because of the high path loss. Securing a well-controlled environment to avoid reflected waves also makes long-range diffraction measurements challenging. Thus, the prediction of diffraction loss at millimeter-wave frequency bands relies on theoretical models, such as the knife-edge diffraction (KED) and geometrical theory of diffraction (GTD) models; however, these models produce different diffraction losses even under the same environment. Our observations revealed that the KED model underestimated the diffraction loss in a large Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction parameter environment. We collected power-delay profiles when millimeter waves propagated over a building rooftop at millimeter-wave frequency bands and calculated the diffraction losses from the measurements while eliminating the multipath effects. Comparisons between the measurements and the KED and GTD diffraction-loss models are shown. Based on the measurements, an approximation model is also proposed that provides a simple method for calculating the diffraction loss using geometrical parameters.
We investigate the radiation characteristics of radially polarized light and azimuthally polarized light through plasmonic subwavelength-scale annular slit (PSAS) structures, by means of both theoretical and numerical methods. Effective-medium theory was utilized to analyze the characteristics of PSAS structures, and the corresponding results showed that PSAS structures can function as a metallic medium for azimuthally polarized light, or as a low-loss dielectric medium for radially polarized light. Numerical calculations based on the finite-element method were also performed, to verify the theoretical analyses. It turned out that the numerical results supported the theoretical results. Moreover, we exploited the PSAS structures in novel nanophotonic elements with dual functionalities that could selectively focus or pass/block incident light, depending on its polarization state. For example, if PSAS structures were implemented in the dielectric region of a metallic Fresnel zone plate, the modified zone plate could function as a blocking element to azimuthally polarized light, yet as a focusing element to radially polarized light. On the contrary, if PSAS structures were implemented in the metallic region of a metallic Fresnel zone plate (i.e. the inverted form of the former), it could function as a focusing element to azimuthally polarized light, yet as a simple transparent element to radially polarized light.

The solar cell is a device to convert light energy into electric, which supplies power to the external load when exposed to the incident light. The photocurrent and voltage occurred in the device are significant factors to decide the output power of solar cells. The crystalline silicon solar cell module has photocurrent loss due to light reflections on the glass and EVA(Ethylene Vinyl Acetate). These photocurrent loss would be a hinderance for high-efficiency solar cell module. In this paper, the quantitative analysis for the photocurrent losses in the 300-1200 wavelength region was performed. The simulation method with MATLAB was used to analyze the reflection on a front glass and EVA layer. To investigate the intensity of light that reached solar cells in PV(Photovoltaic) module, the reflectance and transmittance of PV modules was calculated using the Fresnel equations. The simulated photocurrent in each wavelength was compared with the output of real solar cells and the manufactured PV module to evaluate the reliability of simulation. As a result of the simulation, We proved that the optical loss largely occurred in wavelengths between 300 and 400 nm.
As a result of the examination analyzed loop type of Detecting the Broken Rail Monitoring System as a part of prevention of train derailment, installed in the Seoul Metro No. 2 subway line 98.51m section which is Samsung to Seolleung, we found that it is possible to detect crack location(Thermit welding: 48.18m) within the margin of error of ${\pm}1m$ accurately As analysis of the first day, third day, fifty day, and seventh day periodically, we found that Fresnel reflection happened where the crack location 48.18m. However other 3 branches show loss by bending of optical cable(spread reflection from the outside impact).

In this paper, we presetn a new method to display 3-D image modelled as a sum of 2-D sliced images by expanding the concept of the conventional 2-D optical correlator based on spatial matched filtr to the 3-D region. It is hsown that a arbitrary image can be constructed by an array of the correlation-peaks between pixel-to-pixel and propose the systhesis precedure of 3-D spatial-matched-fjilter using fresnel diffraction equation to display 3-D image in space. It is also shown that the quantization problem is severe when the systehsised filter function is displayed on the conventional LC-SLM. To overcome this problem, anonlinear quantizaton method using the sigmoid function is suggested, and this method can reduce the bias and the loss of high spatial-frequency information, and improve the diffraction efficiency. Finally, the suggested method is tested by computer simulation and then approved by some optical experiments with the conventional LC-SLM.

Diffraction loss occurs when the propagation path is obstructed by mountains and hills between a base station antenna and a moving vehicle antenna in mobile-radio communication. In this paper an approximate mathematical model using Fresnel-Kirchhoff diffraction theory is considered to predict propogation attenuation by natural obstacles with lateral profiles having general shapes. Field tests are conducted using helical and crossed drooping dipole antenna at 820 MHz. The theoretical analysis used in estimating the effects of hills agrees reasonably with experimental data. The results seem to be useful for estimating the level of received power, the minimum allowable input power, the optimum site of base station and consequently, planning terrestrial microwave links.
