Association Between Suicide and Drinking Habits in Adolescents

  • Objectives: Adolescent suicide is a serious social problem. Adolescent alcohol use is one of the most important risk factors for adolescent suicide. This study aimed to identify the relationship between drinking habits and suicide among Korean adolescents. Methods: Data from the 14th and 15th Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, conducted in 2018 and 2019, were used for analysis. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify the relationship between drinking habits-including the age of drinking initiation, frequency of drinking, average drinking amount, frequency of drunkenness-and suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts. Results: Even after adjusting for age, sex, school grade, academic achievement, socioeconomic status, depression, stress, and drinking habits, the frequencies of drinking and drunkenness increased the risk of suicide attempts. Suicide attempts were associated with the frequency of drinking in girls and middle school students, and with the frequency of drunkenness in boys and high school students. Conclusion: This study identified associations between drinking habits (the age of drinking initiation, frequency of drinking, average amount of drinking, frequency of drunkenness) and suicidal behavior in adolescents. Our findings suggest that to prevent adolescent suicide, it might be necessary to investigate drinking habits, including the frequencies of drinking and drunkenness. Moreover, considering the differences in sex and school grade, it is important to include the individual group characteristics when evaluating drinking habits.

소주 및 맥주 음주와 혈중 수은과의 관계에 관한 연구 (Association between Blood Mercury and Drinking Soju and Beer in Korea)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between frequency of alcohol drinking and blood mercury concentration in Korea. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study that used data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Among them, 3,174 persons were selected for the final study. Results: The concentration of mercury in the blood increased as the frequency of drinking soju or beer increased. Similarly, in the multiple-linear regression analysis model, the frequency of soju drinking was identified as an independent variable showing a statistically significant positive linearity (p<0.001). After controlling for confounding factors, comparing those drinking 'more than twice a week' with those who almost do not drink alcohol, the adjusted ORs for exposure to high concentrations of mercury were 3.24 (95% CI, 2.10-4.99) for drinking soju and 2.07 (95% CI, 1.33-3.22) for drinking beer. The interaction effect between 'soju drinking' and 'spicy pollack and seafood stew' was not statistically significant (p=0.098) for evaluating the interaction effect between the two variables. Conclusions: The concentration of mercury in the blood increased as the frequency of drinking of soju or beer increased. The higher the frequency of alcohol drinking, the more likely is the blood mercury to be included in the high-concentration group. The results of this study can be used as important scientific evidence for the field of environmental health related to alcohol drinking and blood heavy metal exposure in Korea.

대학생 위험음주자의 특성 및 결정요인에 관한 분석 (Analysis on Characteristics and Determination Factors of Risky Drinking of University Students)

  • This study examined drinking status, knowledge regarding drinking, and drinking behaviors between non-risky drinking and risky drinking groups and found out the factors determining risky drinking. Data were collected from 355 college students in Gyeongbuk region by a self-administered questionnaire. T tests, ${\chi}^2$ tests and logistic regression analysis were conducted by SPSS Windows V.20.0. Almost 30% of the respondents were categorized as the risky drinking group. The respondents in the risky drinking group showed greater drinking frequency per month, subjective drinking quantity, frequency of resolution not to drinking per month, and drinking expenditure than the non-risky drinking group. There was no statistically significant difference in the percentage of correct answers for knowledge regarding drinking between non-risky drinking group and risky drinking group. However, the respondents in the risky drinking group showed more undesirable drinking behaviors than the non-risky drinking group. Finally, according to the result of logistic regression analysis of the factors determining risky drinking, monthly allowance, major, circle activity status, drinking frequency per month, drinking motive and drinking behaviors were significant.

대학생의 음주 정도, 음주 동기가 음주 허용도에 미치는 영향 (Influences of Level of Alcohol Consumption and Motives for Drinking on Drinking Permissiveness in University Students)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify the risk factors influencing drinking permissiveness in university students. Method: The participants in this descriptive survey on causal relations were 219 students enrolled in university who were selected by convenience sampling. The data collected from April to July, 2005 were used in multiple regression analysis to build a prediction model. Results: Differences in drinking permissiveness according to general characteristics were as follows: gender, drinking frequency, drinking in more than one place each time and frequency of excessive drinking. The relationship between drinking permissiveness and amount of alcohol consumption (drinking frequency/month, amount/each time) showed positive correlations. The relationship between drinking permissiveness and motives to drink (social, enhancement, confirmity, coping motives) also showed positive correlations. The causal factors of drinking permissiveness were social motives, capacity/each time and drinking frequency/month. Conclusion: The findings suggest that board intervention programs should be provided to prevent problems of excessive drinking. It is also recommended that a program be developed that can help control the variables identified in this study along with follow up study to verify the model.

대학생의 음주와 문제음주에 관한 연구 - 제주도 소재 대학 재학생을 중심으로 - (A study on alcohol use & problem drinking among college students)

  • This is an exploratory study to describe drinking patterns and problem drinking and alcohol-related problem in college students. The major purpose of this study is to describe the prevalence of drinking styles, the quantity of alcohol getting drunken and the describe the frequency of drunkenness in the previous 12months prior to the survey, and to examine the patterns of how various drinking behaviors are different by drinking style. We used the scale for measuring problem drinking NAST(1), AUDIT, indicated that males drank more and more and more frequently, and had episodes of drunkenness and more accepting of drinking than females, the amount of alcohol becoming intoxicated, the frequency and quantity of alcohol consumed in the month, and the frequency of intoxicated were significantly different by drinking styles in both sexes. A problem drinking rate, danger drinker 49.3% dependence drinker 3.5% in ADULT and alcohol dependency 9.7% in NAST(1) It will be necessary to discuss about adequate policy and eucation protrams to be able to curb collegiate's alcohol abuse.

간호대 여학생의 음주실태, 음주동기와 문제음주의 상태 비교 (Comparison of Female Nursing College Students in the State of Drinking, Drinking Motives, and Problem Drinking)

  • 본 연구는 간호대학 여학생의 음주실태, 음주동기와 문제음주의 상태 비교를 하고자 실시하였다. 연구대상자는 일부 지역 간호 대학생을 대상으로 하였고, 자료수집기간은 2018년 4월부터 5월까지이며, 분석대상은 181명 이었다. 자료 분석은 정상음주 군과 문제 음주 군과의 차이를 알아보기 위하여 빈도 분석을 사용하였고, 문제음주와의 상관관계는 Pearson's correlation을 이용하였으며, 문제음주 관련요인을 분석하기 위해 로지스틱회귀분석(Logistic regression)을 실시하였다. 그 결과 음주횟수, 마시는 속도, 음주동기, 생활스트레스, 음주문제발생경험이 문제음주에 대한 위험비가 높았다. 구체적으로 살펴보면, 음주횟수로 볼 때 음주횟수가 일 년에 1-4회인 군보다 일주일에 2-3회인 군에서 문제음주에 대한 위험비가 21.53배 높았으며, 음주동기는 음주동기가 낮은 군 보다 음주동기가 높은 군에서 5.96배, 음주문제발생경험은 음주문제발생경험이 낮은 군에 비해 음주문제발생경험이 높은 군에서 8.80배 문제음주에 대한 위험비가 높게 나타났다. 결론적으로, 여대생의 문제음주 관련 요인은 음주횟수, 마시는 속도, 음주동기, 생활스트레스, 음주문제발생경험이 관련성이 높게 나타났다. 따라서 대학생들의 음주실태와 위험요인을 파악하고, 주기적인 절주교육, 문제음주선별과 예방프로그램을 통해 문제음주가 될 위험성을 낮추고, 건전음주문화 정착을 위해 노력해야 할 것이다.

지역 주민의 음주행태 및 관련요인 (Drinking Behavior and Related Factors of Community Residents)

  • Objectives: To investigate the drinking behavior and related factors of community residents in G city. Methods: Examination was executed with questionnaire to 1973 adults. Data were collected from October 1, 2005 to November 16, 2005. Drinking behavior involves rate of drinking, frequency of drinking, age of starting drinking, drinking amount, rate of attempts to drink moderately and reasons for reducing drinking. Related factors involves the general characteristics, the habits of health behaviors. This was analyzed with frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, x2-test, t-test, ANOVA and logistic regression. Results: The drinking rate of the respondents was 67.4%, that rate of male was 83.1%, while that rate of female was 52.5%. The drinking rate was higher in groups of younger aged and highly educated people than that rate of the other groups. The highest level of drinking frequency was ones or twice a week. The drinking frequency of those who drank more than three times weekly was higher in the groups of male, old aged, married people, low educated people, rural residents, farmers or fisherman or laborers and those who unemployed or who did not exercise frequently and control their body weight. These individuals also preferred salty food and meat and fish, dined out frequently, did not visit dental clinic regularly, and tend to be smokers. The mean of the age of starting drinking was 21.17 year-old, that of males was 19.94 year-old, that of females was 22.82 year-old. The mean of the age of starting drinking was lower in groups of male, young aged, unmarried, college educated, rural residents, clerks, high monthly income, healthy and no illness, and smokers than that of the other group. The average of the drinking amount was 5.77 pack, that of males was 7.41 pack, and that of females was 3.31 pack. The drinking amount is much more in groups of males, fifties, unmarried, college educated, rural residents, self-employed, healthy people, and smoker than the other. 33.4% of the respondents attempted to drink moderately. According to the reasons of trying to drink moderately, the rate of prevention illness was highest. Conclusions: The variables of influencing drinking were sex, marital status, education, smoking, monthly income, health status, and stress.

한국 성인 남성의 음주패턴과 비만과의 관련성 (Relationship between Alcohol Drinking Patterns and Obesity and Abdominal Obesity in Korean Adult Men)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to determine whether alcohol drinking patterns (drinking frequency, drinking quantity, binge drinking frequency and risk drinking) were related to obesity and abdominal obesity. Methods: A total of 6,749 adult men from the sixth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were evaluated. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to determine if obesity and abdominal obesity was associated with alcohol consumption patterns after adjusting for covariates. Results: No relationship was observed between drinking frequency and obesity. The odds ratio vs. nondrinkers for obesity was significantly low for individuals who consumed 5 to 6 drinks per typical occasion and monthly binge drinking. However ${\geq}7$ drinks per typical occasion resulted in a significantly higher odds for obesity relative to nondrinkers. The odds ratio vs. nondrinkers for abdominal obesity was significantly lower in response to monthly binge drinking, whereas ${\geq}10$ drinks per typical occasion and daily binge drinking resulted in significantly higher odds for abdominal obesity. Risk drinking had higher odds for abdominal obesity than non-risk drinking. Conclusion: Although moderate alcohol drinkers have a lower prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity than nondrinkers, higher drinking quantity and frequent binge drinking are indicators of a higher prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity in men.

WATER DRINKING BEHAVIOUR OF STEERS FED EITHER FRESH CUT FORAGE OR FIRST CUT HAY

  • To study the effect of moisture content of the diet on drinking behaviour and the amount of water drunk, observations were made on 8 Holstein steers fed either fresh cut forage or first cut hay. The observations were made in a barn with a mean temperature of about $13^{\circ}C$. Drinking occurred mainly within 3 hours after feeding for the steers fed hay, while those fed soilage drank casually. Frequency of drinking (F) was related to the dry-matter concentration (DMC, %) of herbage: F = 0.47 (${\pm}0.09$) DMC - 6.5, $SE={\pm}0.4$, r = 0.86, P<0.01. Intake of drinking water for each 100 kg of live weight (IDW/100kg) for steers fed soilage was related to the dry-matter concentration: IDW/100kg = 0.55 (${\pm}0.06$) DMC - 8.7, $SE={\pm}0.3$, r = 0.94, P<0.01. The intake of water in each drinking period for animals fed fresh forage was curvilinearly related to the drinking frequency; for the hay-fed steers there was a negative linear relationship. When the drinking frequency for steers fed the fresh forage increased to the same as that observed for the hay, water intake in each drinking period was the same as found for the hay-fed steers.

청년기의 음주로 인한 신체적 고통, 음주 결과기대, 금주 자신감과의 관계 (Correlation Study on Physiological Stress from Drinking, Alcohol Abstinence Self-efficacy and Outcome Expectancy in Youths)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships among distress from drinking, alcohol abstinence self-efficacy and outcome expectancy in youths. Method: The participants in this study were 174 university students who were enrolled by convenience sampling. The data were collected from March to August, 2005. Descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlation coefficients with SPSS 12.0 were used to analyze the data. Results: There were significant differences in the physical distress from drinking according to gender, age, residence, drinking frequency and drinking capacity. There were significant differences in alcohol abstinence self-efficacy by drinking frequency and drinking capacity. There were significant differences in drinking outcome expectancy according to gender, drinking frequency and drinking capacity. The physical distress from drinking showed a significant positive correlation with alcohol abstinence self-efficacy (r=.312, p=.000) and negative correlation with drinking outcome expectancy (r=-.353, p=.000). Alcohol abstinence self-efficacy showed a significant negative correlation with drinking outcome expectancy (r=-.387, p=.000). Conclusion: There were relationships among physical distress from drinking, alcohol abstinence self-efficacy, and drinking outcome expectancy. These findings provide the basis to prevent problems of drinking by developing alcohol control program for university students.
