  • This study attempts to analyse the solid mixing in the feeder and the packing effect for pressure fluctuations in the fluidized bed. To study the mixing characteristics of solid in vibrating feeder for the stable operations of fluidized combustion, the system consisted of two groups of particles such that fine particles were located on the top of the coarse particles before vibratory mixing had started. The effects of packing materials on the pressure fluctuations in a fluidized bed were analysed by using a statistical method to interpret the behavior of fluidized bed. The experiments were carried out in a fluidized bed of 6.7cm-ID, and the experimental variables were particle sizes, of 115 to 1,015$\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter and the multi-sized particles haying Rosin-Rammler and Gaussian distributions. The settled bed heights of particles to diameter ratios (L/D) were ranged from 0.5 to 2.0. And fluidizing of particles was carried out by air. The packing materials used were screen packing, and the properties of the pressure fluctuations in the fluidized bed were measured by a differential pressure transducer. The properties of the pressure fluctuations calculated were the mean, the standard deviation, and the major frequency of the power spectral density functions. From the characteristics of fluidizing, it was found that the standard deviation of pressure fluctuations could be effectively used to explain the fluidized phenomena, and the packing materials affected severely the properties of the pressure fluctuations. As a result, from the interpretation by spectral analysis, the effects of measuring radius of pressure fluctuations on standard deviation were constant in the case of the fluidized bed with and without packing materials. However, the effects of measuring the height of pressure fluctuations on standard deviations were linear increasing for the fluidized bed with packing materials, but were constant for the fluidized bed without packing materials at 4.5cm above the gas distributor. The major frequency of pressure fluctuations was found to be nearly independent of fluidized system. Also, the major frequency of pressure fluctuations decreased with increasing packing size, and it had maximum value at 10% of the packing amount.

  • It is shown that even if the modulating frequency of the light is too high for direct detection the signal can be extracted by frequency conversion at the same time as the detection by means of the nonlinearity of the APD. When this frequency conversion detection is applied to an optical receiver, the detection bandwidth can be increased while the configuration of the optical detection circuit and the signal processing in the subsequent stages are simplified. A fundamental analysis is carried out with an APD which is confirmed experimentally.

  • In this study, we investigated the effects of mixing on the aggressive behavior of commercially housed pigs. The behavioral patterns of 36 groups of pigs (a total of 360 animals) were observed over 3 consecutive days directly after weaning ($25{\pm}1.2$ days of age), and 25 and 50 days later with the aid of video technology. Fight latency and total duration and frequency of fighting were significantly different among the age groups. The aggressive behaviors decreased in 75-day old pigs if compared to 25- and 50-day old animals. Moreover, dominance index (DI) was higher in 25-day old and lower in 75-day old pigs. A comparison of dominant (DI>0) and submissive (DI<0) pigs showed significant differences (p<0.05) for major aggressive behaviors in all age groups. Dominant pigs were involved in more aggressive interactions, had longer fights, and initiated more fights than submissive pigs. Post-mixing aggressive behavior was altered by previous experience of mixing. Aggressive behavior and DI are suitable methods for analyzing the effects of mixing on commercially housed growing pigs.

  • Measurements of flame length, width and NOx emissions have been conducted to investigate the effect of an acoustic excitation on flame structure in turbulent hydrogen diffusion flames with coaxial air. The resonance frequency of oscillations was varied between 259 ,514 and 728 Hz with power rate of 0.405 and 2.88w. When these frequencies imposed to hydrogen flames, dramatic reduction of flame length and NOx emission was achieved. And acetone planar laser-induced fluorescence technique was used to measure a concentration of the near field of driven axisymmetric jet. The air-fuel stoichiometric line was plotted to investigate the mixing layer and development of air entrainment to fuel jet. Consequently, acoustic excitation on flame could enhance the air-fuel mixing resulting in abatement of NOx emission quantitatively.

  • To accurately extract absolute distance information from a self-mixing interferometry (SMI) signal, in this paper we propose an approach based on a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm instead of frequency estimation for absolute distance. The algorithm is utilized to search for the global minimum of the fitness function that is established from the self-mixing signal to find out the actual distance. A resolution superior to $25{\mu}m$ in the range from 3 to 20 cm is obtained by experimental measurement, and the results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach in comparison with interpolated FFT. The influence of different external feedback strength parameters and different inertia weights in the algorithm is discussed as well.

  • In this paper, we describe a unique self oscillating and mixing (SOM) down-converter design using a modified defected ground structure (DGS). The proposed SOM converter is consisted of self-oscillator, which can produce negative resistance and select resonance frequency, RF matching circuit, and IF low pass filter. As the advantage of this SOM converter can mix LO and RF signals as well as inducing LO signal with only one active device. it is designed as a simple structure and the low cost. Also, there is easy advantage to be applied in RFIC/MMIC technology because it offers excellent phase noise performance in spite of using micro-strip structure. The LO signal for the proposed SOM converter is designed at 1㎓ and RF frequency was chosen to be 800MHz. The achieved conversion loss and phase noise performances of the implemented SOM converter are 15㏈ and -95dBc/Hz at 100KHz offset frequency respectively. The equivalent circuit parameters for DGS are extracted by using a three dimensional EM simulator and simple circuit analysis method.

  • Internal waves and internal tides occur frequently along the eastern coast of Korea. During the spring-tide period in April 2003, the East Korean Warm Current (EKWC) flowed near the Korean East Coast Farming Forecast System (KECFFS; a moored oceanographic measurement system), creating a strong thermocline at the intermediate layer. Weakened stratification and well-mixed water appeared frequently around the KECFFS, with duration of approximately 1 day. The results suggest the following scenario. Baroclinic motion related to the internal tide generated high frequency internal waves around the thermocline. The breaking of those waves then created turbulence around the thermocline. After well-mixed water appeared, a current component with perpendicular direction to the EKWC appeared within the inertial period. The change in stratification around the KECFFS locally broke the geostrophic balance as a transient state. This local vertical mixing formed an ageostrophic current within the inertial period.

  • Epoxy resin is a polar thermosetting polymer that is widely employed in different branches of industry and everyday life, due to their stable physical and chemical properties. Of all the polymer materials currently being used in the electrical insulation industry, epoxy resin is the most widely used kind, chosen as the base polymer material in the present study. Composites were prepared according to the mixing ratio (MS: MA, 1: 9, 3: 7, 5: 5, 7: 3, 9: 1)of mixture for Heterogeneous Minerals(Micro Silica:MS, Micro Alumina:MA) (MS+MA). We have investigated for AC electrical insulation breakdown characteristics and the dielectric properties (permittivity, dielectric loss, and conductivity) with frequency changes. The electrical AC insulation breakdown performance was improved with the increase of the mixing ratio of MS according to heterogeneous mineral material mixture(MS+MA). As Dielectric properties, the dielectric constant and dielectric loss increased with decreasing frequency and decreased with increasing MS content ratio of heterogeneous mineral mixture. Tensile strength and flexural strength according to the mixing ratio (MS + MA) of epoxy / heterogeneous mineral mixture were studied by mechanical properties. The performance of mechanical tensile and flexural strength was significantly improved as the fill contents ratio of MS increased.

  • Liquefaction is one of the most devastating geotechnical phenomena that severely damage vital structures and lifelines. Before constructing structures on problematic ground, it is necessary to improve the site and solve the geotechnical problem. Among ground improvement methods dealing with liquefaction, gravel drain (GD) columns and deep soil mixing (DSM) columns are popular. In this study, the results of a series of seismic experiments in a 1g environment on a structure located over liquefiable ground with different thicknesses reinforced with GD and DSM techniques were presented. The dynamic response of the reinforced ground system was investigated based on the parameters of subsidence rate, excess pore water pressure ratio, and maximum acceleration. The time history of the input acceleration was applied harmonically with an acceleration range of 0.2g and at frequencies of 1, 2, and 3 Hz. The results show that the thickness of the liquefiable layer and the frequency of the input motion have a significant impact on the effectiveness of the improvement method and all responses. Among the two techniques used, DSM in thick liquefied layers was much more efficient than GD in controlling the subsidence and rupture of the soil under the foundation. Maximum settlement values, settlement rate, and foundation rotation in the thicker liquefied layer at the 1-Hz input frequency were higher than at other frequencies. At low thicknesses, the dynamic behavior of the GD was closer to that of the DSM.

  • We propose a novel velocity detection method of moving object based on a speckle pattern on the target surface using a self-mixing laser diode (SMLD). By this measurement, it was confirmed that the speckle signal has its waveform independent of the target velocity, and has its averaged frequency directly proportional to the target velocity. So it will be possible to detect the velocity of the target transversely translating against the laser light beam using a compact measuring system.
