  • Terahertz (THz) generation by periodically-poled $KTiOPO_4$ (PPKTP) with a quasi-phase-matching scheme based on cascaded difference frequency generation (DFG) processes is theoretically analyzed. The cascaded Stokes interaction processes and the cascaded anti-Stokes interaction processes are investigated from coupled wave equations. THz intensities and quantum conversion efficiency are calculated. Compared with non-cascaded DFG processes, THz intensities from 10-order cascaded DFG processes are increased to 5.53. The quantum conversion efficiency of 479.4% in cascaded processes, which exceeds the Manley-Rowe limit, can be realized.

  • Corona discharge and ozone generation characteristics of a wire-plate plasma reactor, with a biased third electrode, have been investigated with an emphasis on the role of the bias voltage and frequency applied on the third electrode. It was found that the wire-plate plasma reactor, with the biased third electrode, had a switching characteristic on its I-V characteristics for negative and positive discharges, which is very different from that of a conventional wire-plate plasma reactor without the third electrode. As a result, the corona discharge and ozone generation characteristics of the proposed plasma reactor could be controlled by adjusting the bias voltage and frequency of the third electrode. The corona onset and breakdown voltages, and ozone generation and yield, were increased compared with those of without the third electrode. These, however, reveal the effectiveness of the biased third electrode.

  • This paper deals with the secondary excited induction generator applied to random wave input generation system. As it is preferred to stabilize the output voltage and frequency in the constant level, microcomputer controlled CSI connected to the secondary windings supplies the secondary current with slip frequency. For testing this method, the input torque simulator is constructed, according to the power flow analysis. The experimental and numerical results show the advantage of secondary excited induction generator system for the random input wave generation system.

  • The grid-interconnected microgrid can be able to operate with and without the utility microgrid to supply electricity. when the microgrid operates in grid-connected mode, the frequency of the microgrid synchronizes with the system frequency. In this case, the frequency of the microgrid has small variation which is able to change the output of distributed generation with a droop controller. Thus, the small variation of frequency can make the distributed generation generate unnecessary electricity consistently. In this paper, we propose a frequency droop control with a dead band so as to prevent the distributed generations from generating unnecessary output while in grid-interconnected mode. In addition, a distributed generation can have a restoration control to restore the frequency changed by a droop control as a rated frequency. Also, we state the problem of restoration control with a dead band, and propose its solution when the microgrid operates in stand alone mode. We simulate the proposed droop control using PSCAD/EMTDC to verify the validity of the control.

  • This paper presents that generation and propagation mechanism of low frequency current ripples generated by a rectification effect of an inverter in fuel cell generation system is analyzed. The ripple reduction methode using hardware components such as capacitors and inductors is examined to reduce low frequency current ripples. A new fast and robust low frequency current ripple elimination algorithm is then proposed to incorporate a single loop current controller, which directly controls fuel cell current, without any extra hardware. The proposed algorithm can completely eliminate this current ripple as well as an overshoot or undershoot is significantly reduced. And the de link voltage and output current are well regulated by inverter controller. The validity of proposed algorithm is verified both computer simulation using PSIM 6.0 and experiment with a 1kW laboratory prototype.

  • The frequency of power system will change when the load-generation equilibrium is disturbed. Insufficiency of generation from the imbalance between load and generation decreases the power system frequency. In case of the severe emergency, the under frequency load shedding scheme is applied for the power system defense plan. In this paper, we analyzed the dynamic characteristics of under frequency load shedding using new Transient Security Assessment Tool ; TSAT. We applied the actual UFLS scheme to these studies and considered the possible contingency.

  • This paper describes a natural frequency analysis conducted to find out a suitable working area for a spring-manipulator system generating a large vibrating force with mechanical resonance. Large force generation is one of the functions that we hope for a robot. For example, a weeding robot is required to generate a large force, because some weeds have roots spreading deeply and tightly. The spring-manipulator system has a spring element as an end-effector, so it can be in a state of resonance with the elasticity of the spring element and the inertial characteristics of the manipulator. A force generation method utilizing the mechanical resonance has potential to produce a large force that cannot be realized by a static method. A method for calculating a natural frequency of a spring-manipulator system with the generalized inertia tensor is proposed. Then the suitable working area for the spring-manipulator system is identified based on a natural frequency analysis. If a spring-manipulator system operates in the suitable working area, it can sustain mechanical resonance and generate a large vibrating force. Moreover, it is shown that adding a mass at the tip of the manipulator expands the suitable working area.

  • This paper presents the control and implementation of the dual-stator-winding induction generator for variable frequency AC (VFAC) generating system. This generator has two sets of stator windings embedded into the stator slots. The power winding produces the VFAC power to feed the loads, and the control winding is connected to the static excitation controller to control the generator for output voltage regulation with speed and load variations. On the basis of the idea of power balance, an instantaneous slip frequency control (ISFC) strategy using the information of both the output voltage and the output power is used in this system. A series of experiments is carried out on a 15 kW prototype for verification. Results show that the system has good static and dynamic performance in a wide speed range, which demonstrates that the ISFC strategy is suitable for this system.

  • Recently, module-integrated converter (MIC) research has shown interest in small-scale photovoltaic (PV) generation. The converter is capable of efficient power generation. In this system, the high frequency transformer should be made compact, and demonstrate high efficiency characteristics. This paper presents a core structure optimization procedure to improve the efficiency of a high frequency transformer of compact size. The converter circuit is considered in the finite element analysis (FEA) model, in order to obtain an accurate FEA result. The results are verified by the testing of prototypes.

  • This paper proposes active power control and frequency support control schemes of wind turbine generation system by using modified Maximum Power Point Tracking(MPPT) of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator(PMSG). Most wind turbine generation system is completely decoupled from the power system and power output control with pitch control. According to the frequency deviation, however, MPPT control can not contribute to the frequency change of the power system due to its active power output control. For solving this, the de-loaded(DL) control scheme is constructed for the frequency support control, which is based on applying the active power output control in the rotor speed control of PMSG. The rotor speed by used in the proposed DL control scheme is increased more than the optimal rotor speed of MPPT, and then this speed improvement increases the saved kinetic energy(KE). In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme, the case studies have been performed using the PSCAD/EMTDC. The results show that the proposed active power output control scheme(DL control and KE discharge control) works properly and the frequency response ability of the power system can be also improved with the frequency support of wind farm.
