With the development and utilization of urban underground space, the artificial ground freezing technology has been widely used in the construction of underground engineering in soft soil areas. The mechanical properties of soft clay changed greatly after freezing and thawing, which affected the seismic performance of underground structures. In this paper, a series of triaxial tests were carried out to study the dynamic response of the freezing-thawing clay under the seismic load considering different dynamic stress amplitudes and different confining pressures. The reduction factor of dynamic shear stress was determined to correct the amplitude of the seismic load. The deformation development mode, the stress-strain relationship and the energy dissipation behavior of the soft clay under the seismic load were analyzed. An empirical model for predicting accumulative plastic strain was proposed and validated considering the loading times, the confining pressures and the dynamic stress amplitudes. The relevant research results can provide a theoretical reference to the seismic design of underground structures in soft clay areas.

It is extremely difficult to apply conventional grouting methods to subsea tunnelling construction in the high water pressure condition. In such a condition, the rapid artificial freezing method can be an alternative to grouting to form a watertight zone around freezing pipes. For a proper design of the artificial freezing method, the influence of salinity on the freezing process has to be considered. However, there are few domestic tunnel construction that adopted the artificial freezing method, and influential factors on the freezing of the soil are not clearly identified. In this paper, a series of laboratory experiments were performed to identify the physical characteristics of frozen soil. Thermal conductivity of the frozen and unfrozen soil samples was measured through the thermal sensor adopting transient hot-wire method. Moreover, a lab-scale freezing chamber was devised to simulate freezing process of silica sand with consideration of the salinity of pore-water. The temperature in the silica sand sample was measured during the freezing process to evaluate the effect of pore-water salinity on the frozen rate that is one of the key parameters in designing the artificial freezing method in subsea tunnelling. In case of unfrozen soil, the soil samples saturated with fresh water (salinity of 0%) and brine water (salinity of 3.5%) showed a similar value of thermal conductivity. However, the frozen soil sample saturated with brine water led to the thermal conductivity notably higher than that of fresh water, which corresponds to the fact that the freezing rate of brine water was greater than that of fresh water in the freezing chamber test.
Experiments were conducted to investigate the relationships between the soil freezing depth and the accumulated degree-day of temperature below $0^{\circ}C$ at 17 locations during 1989-1990 winter season in kangwon province. The observed results are as follows : 1.When accumulated degree-day of temperature below at was 141t at late January soil freezing depth of sunny place was 46.5cm, that of shaded lot was 59 cm, and that of marginal place sunny or shaded area was 55cm, in Chun cheon. 2.Accumulated degree-day of temperature below at of Dae gwangryong area was more than that of Un-du, whereas soil freezing depth of Dae gwangryong was lower that of Un-du. It was considered that snow covering worked as heat insulator. 3.Soil freezing depth of vinyl mulching on Zoysia turf was less by around 2Ocm than that of non-vinyl mulching. Rice hulls covering of 4Ocm showed the great heat insulation effects with the soil freezing depth of 1.5cm at sunny place and 6.5cm at shaded lot compared to that of 47cm at sunny and 59.5 cm at shaded place bare ground. 4.Among investingated areas, Dunae, Honeg seong gun was the deepest soil freezing, 89cm with $569^{\circ}C$ of accumulated degree-day of temperature below $0^{\circ}C$ at late February. 5.dehydration of Juniperus C. var. Kaizuca, Euonymus japonica, and Chamaecyparis pisifira at winter season was around 5 %, however dehydration of Vinca minor was more than 10 %. Soil freezing is a phenomenon arising due to temperature difference between atmosphere and ground, and physical properties of soils vary upon the phase change of soil void from liquid to solid (ice). A heat-transfer mechanism for this case can be explained by the conduction in soil layers and the convection on ground surface. Accordingly, the evaluation of proper thermal properties of soils and the convective condition of ground surface is an important task for understanding freezing phenomenon. To describe convection on ground surface, simplified coefficient methods can be applied to deal with various conditions, such as atmospheric temperature, surface vegetation conditions, and soil constituents. In this study, two methods such as n-factor and convection coefficient for the convective ground surface boundary were applied within a commercial numerical program (TEMP/W) for modeling soil freezing phenomenon. Furthermore, the numerical results were compared to laboratory testing results. In the series of the comparison results, the convection coefficient is more appropriate than n-factor method to model the convective boundary condition.
This study clarifies the simulation on freezing of remaining water in the Z-trap set up in the PVC sewage bay to control malodor. It made use of commercial FEM LAB program(ver. 3.2) well known as a solution of the problems arising in the flow of various fluid, heat transfer and mass transfer. Simulation results under the temperature $-20^{\circ}C$ outwards show that the water in the Z-trap set up in the sewage bay to control malodor freeze in the 60cm under the ground level after 14 days in the wet ground, and after 17 days in the regular ground. On the other hand, if the soil is dry even after the 42 days does not go down below freezing. Therefore, the water in the Z-trap was confirmed that it does not freeze.

The National Construction Research Institute of Korea has measured the depth of the frozen ground covering all the areas of South Korea during ten years ranging through 1980. The measurements were made for the frozen ground at random but intended for the most frost-susceptible soils. The soils of the frozen ground were sampled and then classifide into four groups according to the frost design soil classification system suggested by the Corps of Engineers of the United States. The contours of the maximum depth of the frost penetration are drawn on a map with data collected during the ten years. Also isolines of the design frezing index are shown on an another map using the metorological information of 1980-1989 and compared whth those in vestigated in 1980 by Highway Survey Team of the Ministry of Construction, Korea. It is known that the maximum depth of the frost penetration is related to freezing index values. An empirical formula expressing the relation is suggsted, in which the depth is proportional to the one-third power of the air freezing index values.

This paper presents the experimental results of frost durability characteristics including freezing-thawing and de-icing salt scaling of the concrete for gutter of the road and marine structure. Mixtures were proportioned with the three level of water-binder ratio(W/B) and three binder compositions corresponding to Type I cement with 0%, 30% and 50% GGBS(Ground granulated blast furnace slag) replacement. Also, two different solutions of calcium chloride were used to evaluate their effect on the frost durability resistance. Specially, in case of complex of freezing and thawing with salt and carbonation, the deterioration of concrete surface is evaluated. Test results showed that the BFS30 and BFS50 mixture exhibited higher durability and lower mass loss values than those made with OPC mix and the use of GGBS can be used effectively in terms of economy and frost durability of the concrete to be in complex deterioration. Therefore, the resistance to complex deterioration with freezing-thawing was strongly influenced by the strength and the type of cement.

Most studies have conducted cryogenic triaxial compression tests with frozen specimens prepared in a separate mold by one-directional freezing. This method has the potential to generate residual stress in a frozen specimen and cannot be adopted to simulate the application of the artificial ground freezing method in the field. Therefore, in this study, novel equipment and procedure for the cryogenic triaxial compression test were proposed to overcome the limitations of existing test methods. Therefore, the mechanical characteristics of frozen sand, considering the effect of temperature and confining pressure, were evaluated. As the freezing temperature decreased, the brittleness of frozen sand increased, and the strength increased due to a decrease in the unfrozen water content and an increase in the ice strength. A higher confining pressure resulted in an increase in interparticle friction and the pressure melting phenomenon, which caused strength reduction. Thus, it was found that the mechanical behaviors of frozen sand were simultaneously affected by both temperature and confining pressure.
Korea has four distinct seasons, showing hot and humidity in summer and cold weather lasted in winter. Domestic research on earth work has been developed according to the seasonal characteristics, and most of research topics have focused on the effect of freezing-thawing on the performance of geo-materials. However, the previous research was performed on the ground compacted at room temperature and therefore, the effect of the sub-zero temperature at the time of construction was not fully investigated. The ground characteristics compacted at freezing temperature can be different from those at room temperature and show different characteristics of strength and deformation caused by freezing and thawing. Therefore, the compaction tests on sandy materials were conducted under various temperature at $-3^{\circ}C$ and $-8^{\circ}C$ with various fine contents of 0%, 5%, 10% and 15% in weight fraction. The effectiveness of soil compaction at below-freezing temperatures were compared with the compaction at room temperature at $18^{\circ}C$ in terms of the maximum dry unit weight and optimum water contents. Based on the test results, the maximum dry unit weight tends to decrease with the freezing temperature and the relative compaction at $-8^{\circ}C$ can not be satisfied with general specification standard.
Recently, construction disasters in thawing season are increasing due to the ground collapse and it is related to the improper compaction during winter season. Compaction at sub-zero temperature reduces the compaction effect and the research of mechanical properties of thawed soil after winter compaction can be used as useful data to understand the behavior of the ground in the thawing season. On the other hand, the research interest in the unsaturated soil mechanics has been increasing in the field of the geotechnical engineering. Therefore, it is expected that the research of unsaturated characteristics under the compaction of sub-zero temperature and freezing & thawing condition provides information to the researchers in the related fields. Therefore, in this research, unsaturated soil-water characteristics test and unsaturated uniaxial compression test were conducted on the specimens compacted at sub-zero temperature and continuous freezing & thawing condition to investigate change of unsaturated characteristics and matric suction. Based on the test results, the change of matric suction and the decrease of strength and stiffness were observed with the freezing & thawing conditions. Especially in case of the weathered soil, the strength and matric suction were significantly reduced with lower temperature and more repetition of freezing & thawing cycles. This result implies that compaction of sub-zero temperature and freezing & thawing cycles will have a considerable influence on the stability of the ground.
