The motion of a floating body and the free surface flow are the most important design considerations for ships and offshore platforms. In the present research, a numerical method is developed to simulate the motion of a floating body and the free surface using a fixed rectilinear grid system. The governing equations are the continuity equation and Naviere-Stokes equations. The boundary of a moving body is defined by the interaction points of the body surface and the centerline of a grid. To simulate the free surface the Modified Marker-Density method is implemented. Ships advancing in regular waves, the interaction of waves by a fixed circular cylinder array and the response amplitude operators of an offshore platform are simulated and the results are compared with published research data to check the applicability. The numerical method developed in this research gives results good enough for application to the initial design stage.
The analysis involves an adaptive grid that is created under a criterion of element categorization of filling states and locations in the total region at each time step. By using an adaptive grid wherein the elements, finer than those in internal and external regions, are distributed at the surface region through refinement and coarsening procedures, a more efficient analysis of transient fluid flow with free surface is achieved. Using the proposed numerical technique, the collapse of a dam is analyzed. The numerical results agree well with the theoretical solutions as well as with the experimental results. Through comparisons with the numerical results of several cases using different types of grids, the efficiency of the proposed technique is verified.

A flow problem around a ship hull with the nonlinear free surface boundary condition has been considered within the potential flow assumption. The Green's function based on the hull boundary condition is constructed numerically and used to satisfy the free surface boundary condition. This singularity to be distributed ideally on the undulating free surface is put actually, for practical reasons, on the flat water surface with the assumption of linear variation of velocities between the two positions. The surfaces of singularity distribution are approximated by Hess and Smith type quadrilaterals. The radiation condition is only crudely satisfied and this produced one of the major difficulties arising in the present way of attacking the problem.
A study on the sloshing flow of highly-viscous fluid in a rectangular box was made by both of theoretical approach and experimental visualization method. Assuming a smallness of external forcing to oscillate the container, it was investigated a linear sloshing flow of highly-viscous fluid utilizing asymptotic analysis by Taylor-series expansion as a small parameter Re (≪1) in which Re denotes Reynolds number. The theory predict that, during all cycles of sloshing, a linear shape of free surface will prevail in a bulk zone and it has confirmed in experiment. The relevance of perfect slip boundary condition, adopted in theoretical approach, to the bulk zone flow at the container wall was tested in experiment. It is found that quasi-steady coated thin film, which makes a lubricant layer between bulk flow and solid wall, is generated on the wall and the film makes a role to perfect slip boundary condition.
Numerical computations are carried out to analyze the characteristics of flow fields around Air Supported Ships. The computations are performed in a rectangular grid system based on MAC(Marker And Cell) method. The governing equations are represented in finite difference forms by forward differencing in time and centered differencing in space except for its convection terms. For the certification of this numerical analysis method, the computations of flow fields around a Catamaran, an ACV(Air Cushion Vehicle) modeled with pressure distribution on free surface and two SES(Surface Effect Ship)'s are carried out, The results of the present computations are compared with the previously presented computational and experimental results in the same condition.
A level-set finite-element method is employed to investigate the free surface flow of two conceptual fish passage designs. While one design has a right-angled entrance from the reservoir to the fish passage chute, the other has a curved-shaped entrance. The numerical results are validated with hydraulic experiments through comparison of the free surface location and the pressure distribution in the spillway. It is observed that the right-angled design yields a curved free surface and pressure distribution in the vicinity of the entrance due to large strains, whereas the curved-shaped design yields a smooth flow transition with small strains. The subatmospheirc pressure distributions near the spillway ogee crest for both designs exhibit similar flow patterns. It is concluded that the curved-shaped design is more favorable for fish passage because of the feature of a smooth flow transition with small strains.
When the vessel is running at the very low Froude numbers, the free-surface is difficult to be disturbed, wave-making is negligible, and the double -model velocity potential gives a very good approximation for calculating the velocity distribution just outside the boundary layer. If the speed of incident flow is gradually increased, the most perceptible change is the rise of the flow surface at stem. With further increase in speed, the nature of the flow at the bow changes completely, The flow ahead of the bow becomes more distrubed, the rise at the stem to stagnation height disappear, and the first wave crest, of less than the stagnation height, appears a small distance downstream from the stem. The present study is concerned with a small region of this flow, mainly in the bow region. The present investigation is primarily an experimental study of the flow in the bow region of s ship model, and it is undertaken in order to investigated systematically, the effect of bow geometry on this flow. The long-range objective is to use these results to guide the development of a mathematical model for predicting the flow about a ship's bow.

Dam-break flows, a type of very shallow gravity-driven flow, are substantially influenced by resistance forces due to viscous friction and turbulence. Assuming turbulent flow, the main focus of this study is to validate the increase of drag forces caused by surface roughness and especially turbulence intensity. A Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) approach with the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is used for this study, where the free surface motion is captured by using a volume of fluid(VOF) method. Surface roughness effects are considered through the law of the wall modified for roughness, while the initial turbulence intensity which determines the lowest level of turbulence in the flow domain of interest is used for the variation of turbulence intensity. It has been found that the numerical results at higher turbulence intensities show a reasonably good agreement with the physical aspects shown by two different dam-break experiments without and with the impact of water.
In this study, we analyzed the three dimensional unsteady flow field around the motor cooling fan using the unsteady lifting surface theory. We obtained the flow rate for various geometries of fan from the calculated results of velocity field. For the data of design parameter and rotating speed(rpm) of the fan, we can predict the flow rate of the motor cooling fan with thin thickness through numerical analysis without the experimental data of the free stream velocity which is a boundary condition of flow field. the numerical results showed the flow rate within 10% of error in comparison with experimental results. The radial fans, which are often used as internal motor fan were also investigated with the same procedure.
Flow rate measurement is one of the difficult problems in the industrial applications. Especially, flow rate in a partially filled pipeline is affected by many parameters such as water level, channel slop, etc. In the present study, prior to the development of a flowmeter, the flow characteristics has been investigated by particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements. Three-dimensional velocity distributions were obtained from sectional measurements of velocity profiles according to the water level. As a result, it is found that there is no similarity in the velocity profile when the lateral position is changed. In addition, the maximum velocity does not always occur on the free surface. It depends on the water level. In the aspect of flow rate measurement, the previous calculus based upon point measurement techniques is proved to be inaccurate because of the lack of whole flow information.
