  • The recent completions of free-form spatial structures provide us a very attractive form. To realize such an extraordinary shape, it is absolutely necessary that the connector systems have to be investigated the characteristics of the systems and analyzed with a practicable method. In this context, this research consists of not only literature research but also numerical analysis with selected connector systems, which was adopted in real free-form spatial structures. For numerical analysis, especially, finite element analysis (FEA) is performed with a various test parameter using a commercial program ANSYS. Consequently, the general characteristics of node connectors the moment-rotation-curves are presented by considering a large deformation effect as well as a multi-linear material properties.

  • Single layer free-form structures are being highlighted in the field of architecture due to its attractive shape. In these structures, node connecting system is very important because the node must resist bending and axial stress simultaneously. So the local and global stabilities of entire structure can be determined by the stiffness of node system. In this study, therefore, various types of bending test with axial force were performed. As a result, bending capacity with axial force of a new spherical node for free-form structure could be performed and structural capacities were checked to use in real structure.

  • This paper provides background theories and numerical results of automatic finite element (FE) mesh generation for freeform discrete structures. The present method adopts the computer aided geometric design (CAGD) technique to overcome the limitation of case-sensitive traditional automatic FE mesh generator. The present technique involves two steps. The first one is to represent the shape of the structure using the geometric model based on the CAGD and the second one is to generate the discrete FE mesh of spatial structures over the geometric model. From numerical results, it is found to be that the present technique is very easy to produce the FE mesh for free-form spatial structures and it can also reuse some features of traditional automatic mesh generator in the process. Furthermore, it shows the possibility to be used for the shape optimization of large spatial structures.

  • The membrane structure maintains stable form by giving initial tension to ductile membrane and increasing the stiffness of exterior that is much adopted in the large span spatial structure by making its thickness thin. This kind of membrane structure has characteristic that can express free-form curve, so the selection of structural form is very important. So, this paper proposes the expression of free-form surface based on NURBS basis function and the finite element method considering geometrical nonlinearity for the deduction of large deformation result. Also, for minimizing the approximation of the surface that is derived from the form-finding result, the interface method that change finite element mesh to NURBS is proposed. So, the optimum surface of free-form membrane is derived.

  • Recently, due to the advanced computer technology, momental architectures have been designed and built using features that are very sophisticated. People's interest in free-form structural system has increased steadily not only nationwide, but also worldwide. However, there were many difficulties in the materialization of free-form structural system owing to the lack of technique and research. To solve this problem, this study performs the interface between the 3D modeling program and the optimization program. In the 3D modeling program, it is possible to automatic mesh generation and immediately to information extraction. It performs the shape optimization. Consequently, this research designs the example model and performs optimization in order to verify the developed interface module.

  • In this study, the 'force density method' for shape finding of cable net structures is presented. This concept is based on the force-length ratios or force densities which are defined for each branch of the net structures. This method renders a simple linear 'analytical form finding' possible. If the free choice of the force densities is restricted by further condition, the linear method is extended to a nonlinear one. The nonlinear one can be applied to the detailed computation of networks. In this paper, the general inverse matrix is introduced to solve the nonlinear equilibrium equation including Jacobian matrix which is rectangular matrix. Several examples for linear and nonlinear analysis applied additional constraints are presented. It is shown that the force density method is suitable for form finding of cable net and the general inverse matrix can be applied to solve the nonlinear equation without Lagrangian factors.
