  • In this paper, we measured the propagation path loss by a ground to air flight communication test at UHF band and analyzed the results. The ground receiving terminal was located at 1,100m above sea level in Cheju Island and the airborne transmit terminal flew at an altitude of 3.5km from 150 to 220km from the ground terminal. In this case, the ground terminal and the airborne terminal are on the Line of Sight. Therefore loss in this communications environment can be predicted based on Free Space Loss. However, in this test, the sea level exists between two terminals, and due to the very small angle of incidence on the reflecting surface due to the long-range communication environment, it is not possible to accurately predict the loss of free space only. Therefore, considering that there are no surrounding obstacles and that a line of sight is secured between the end of two terminals, we applied a plane earth reflection model and a spherical earth reflection model to estimate the propagation path loss and compared with the actual test results. As a result of the comparison, the predicted propagation path loss by a spherical earth reflection model were quite similar to the actual test values.

  • We present a weather-insensitive optical free-space communication method supporting optical packet channels. It operates optical fiber amplifiers in gain-saturation regions. When the propagation loss gets too high, it decreases the average packet rate, or the average packet length, or both, to increase the optical power level launched into the free-space. As a demonstration, we transmit $8{\times}10$ Gigabit Ethernet channels over a terrestrial distance of 2.4 km. One gain-saturated free-space optical repeater is used at the halfway point.

  • The methods of clinical applications of the foot as a free-flap donor site includes microvascular toe-to-finger transfer, free neurovascular flap transfer, first web space flap transfer, and osteocutaneous free flap transfer. We have evaluated the results of treatment for 35 patients to be undergone a microvascular reconstructive procedure with the foot as a donor site from January 1982 to June 1996. The performed operations were 16 cases of thumb reconstruction with wrap around procedure, 3 cases of tenocutaneous flap transfer, 10 cases of dorsalis pedis flap transfer, 2 cases of first web space free flap and 4 cases of toe-to-finger transfer. The follow up study was 69 months in average. Regarding to the various donor sites, morbidity was divided into five different categories: Cosmesis, Functional loss, Sensory loss, Wound complication, and Pain. According to the results of examination(35 patients), the results was excellent(25), good(9), fair(1), and poor(0). Among the categories, morbidity was higher at cosmesis. The patients under 50 years were better outcome. Among the operative methods from the foot as a donor site, thumb reconstruction with wrap around procedure showed poorest outcomes. So, We conclude that the foot as a free flap donor site is a good source for the microvascular reconstructive surgery. But, Preoperative donor site evaluation, adequate operative technique and post operative management are essential to decrease the morbidity of donor site.

  • In this paper, path loss and delay profile characteristics are measured in the subway platform. To evaluate the fading characteristics of the measured signals, the standard deviations are computed. The standard deviation is bigger for shorter distance. The shorter the distance, the bigger the phase difference between direct wave and reflected waves according the distance, which results in heavy fading. To compute the path loss according to distance, the average values of path loss exponent(n) is evaluated. The path loss exponents measured in the subway environment for Omni-VP(omni-directional vertical polarization) antenna and CP(circular polarization) antenna are 1.418 and 1.680, respectively, which are considerably less than 2.0, the free space path loss exponent.

  • We analyze the link availability of satellite-to-ground free-space optical (FSO) communication systems in South Korea. Using ten-year meteorological data for five major cities (Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and Gwangju), we theoretically predict the link availability from the power losses induced by absorption, scattering, aerosols, and scintillation in the atmospheric channel. For accurate but conservative estimation of the link availability determined by cloud cover, we propose a loss model based on the maximum value of cloud droplet concentration. The results show that the link availability ranges from 45% to 70% when a single ground station is placed in a major city in South Korea and a 20-dB link budget is allocated for atmospheric loss. However, the availabilities improve to 90% and 97% when 3- and 5-site diversities are employed, respectively.

  • In this work, we propose an airborne cognitive radio system that searches a new spectrum band to avoid a communication interruption due to the interference from many radar signals. We develop a method of fast spectrum sensing based on an effective frequency by recognizing the interfering radar as well as geographical information. This effective frequency is calculated by the free-space path loss between a base station and a fighter with the speed parameter. From our analysis, it is verified that the maximum frequency searching time is reduced by half by using our method.

  • The electromagnetic (EM) absorption or shielding characteristics of a material is an important issue not only for military purpose but also for commercial purposes such as radar, electric or telecommunication devices. In order to design the effective electromagnetic wave absorber, the electromagnetic characteristics of the constituents of the material should be available in target frequency band. Also, it must be possible to predict the electromagnetic properties of absorbers with respect to the content of lossy ingredients. In this study, the dielectric properties of unsaturated polyester resins containing nano-size conductive carbon black powder were measured with a free space method in the X-band frequency range and analyzed with respect to the content of carbon black. Finally, the method for estimating the dielectric properties of polymeric resin containing conductive carbon black with respect to the EM frequency was developed and verified.

  • This study is to determine the severity and direction of the movement of the adjacent tooth into the created space by tooth or teeth loss. The random samples 387 cases (upper; 121 cases, lower; 266 cases) were selected with surveying record under some criteria. Edentulous area is grouped into the free end type and the tooth borne type. The following results were obtained. In the tooth borne type, slight distal movement of the adjacent tooth into the edentulous space was obtained. And the tooth distal to the edentulous space moved into the space in proportion to the duration of the edentulous state. Elongation of the opposing tooth of the free end type was more severe than that of the tooth borne type. And no inter-relationship between the severity of the elongation and the duration of the edentulous state In general, adjacent teeth had normal and mesial inclination. Lower teeth migrated mesially and lingually (especially in the distal tooth to the edentulous space in the tooth borne type). Upper adjacent teeth usually moved into the normal direction.

  • Compressive sensing (CS) is a newly developed data acquisition and processing technique that takes advantage of the sparse structure in signals. Normally signals in their primitive space or format are reconstructed from their compressed measurements for further treatments, such as modal analysis for vibration data. This approach causes problems such as leakage, loss of fidelity, etc., and the computation of reconstruction itself is costly as well. Therefore, it is appealing to directly work on the compressed data without prior reconstruction of the original data. In this paper, a direct approach for modal analysis of damped systems is proposed by decomposing the compressed measurements with an appropriate dictionary. The damped free vibration function is adopted to form atoms in the dictionary for the following sparse decomposition. Compared with the normally used Fourier bases, the damped free vibration function spans a space with both the frequency and damping as the control variables. In order to efficiently search the enormous two-dimension dictionary with frequency and damping as variables, a two-step strategy is implemented combined with the Orthogonal Matching Pursuit (OMP) to determine the optimal atom in the dictionary, which greatly reduces the computation of the sparse decomposition. The performance of the proposed method is demonstrated by a numerical and an experimental example, and advantages of the method are revealed by comparison with another such kind method using POD technique.

  • In a Satellite communication system, a link budget analysis is the detailed investigation of signal gains and losses moving through a channel from a sender to receiver. It inspects the fading of passed on data signal waves due to the process of spreading or propagation, including transmitter and receiver antenna gains, feeder cables, and related losses. The extent of the proposed tool is to make an effective, efficient, and user-friendly approach to calculate link budget analysis. It is also related to the satellite communication correlation framework by building up a graphical interface link analysis tool utilizing STK® software with the interface of C# programming. It provides better kinds of graphical display techniques, exporting and importing data files, printing link information, access data, azimuth-elevation-range (AER), and simulation is also possible at once. The components of the link budget analysis tool include transmitter gain, effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP), free space loss, propagation loss, frequency Doppler shift, flux density, link margin, elevation plot, etc. This tool can be useful for amateur users (e.g., CubeSat developers in the universities) or nanosat developers who may not know about the RF communication system of the satellite and the orbital mechanics (e.g., orbit propagators) principle used in the satellite link analysis.
