  • In this study, the surface marker method, one of the particle tracking methods, used to track the free surface is extended to cover the more general cases easily including the collision and separation of the free surface. In surface particle method to redistribute particles effectively using the grid system, the free surface is composed of the sum of quadrilaterals having four curves where fixed markers are placed at ends of each curve. Fixed markers are used to know how curves are connected to each other. The position of fixed markers can move as the free surface deforms but all fixed markers cannot be deleted during all time of simulation to keep informations of curve connection. In the case of the collision or separtion of the free surface where several curves can be intersected disorderly, severe difficulties can occur to define newly states of curve connection. In this study, the adaptable surface parTicle method without fixed markers is introduced. Intersection markers instead of the fixed markers are used to define quadrilaterals. The position of the intersection markers is defined to be the intersection point between the free surface and the edge of the grid and it can be added or deleted during the time of simulation to allow more flexibilities. To verify numerical schemes, two flow cases are simulated and the numerical results are compared with other's one and shown to be valid.

  • An efficient context-free multiple-object segmentation using attention operator based on modified generalized symmetry transform is proposed and implemented by modifying a radial basis function network. By using the difference of intensity gradient, instead of te intensity gradient itself, in generalized symmetry tranform so as to make the attention operator to preserve the edges of the objects shape, an efficient context-free multiple-object segementation is proposed in which no a priori shape informtion on the objects is requried. The attention operator is implemented by using a modified radial basis function network which can reflect symmetry, and by using te edge pyramid of the input image, both of the local and the global symmetry of the objects are reflected simultaneously to make the multiple-object with different sizes be segmented with a singel fixed-size $n\timesm$ can be done with O(n) complexity. The simulaton results show that the proposed algorithm can efficiently be used in context-free multiple-object segmentation even for the low contrast IR images as well as for the images from the camera.

  • The free vibration analyses of the isotropic and composite(CFRP, GFRP) rectangular plates with point supports at the free edge and middle position are performed. The natural frequencies and nodal patterns of plates with point supports are experimentally determined by impact testing using an impact hammer. To compare and verify these experimental results, the finite element analysis is also carried out. The effect of the point support position, the number of point supports, and the anisotropic parameters on the natural frequencies and nodal patterns of cantilevered rectangular plates are investigated.

  • A stress distribution of composite laminates patches is obtained by using the Kantorovich method when the substrate is under uniaxial load. The analysis is based on the stress function approach and uses the complementary virtual work principle. The three-dimensional stresses satisfy the traction free conditions at the free edges and the top surfaces of the patch. The stress of the bottom surfaces of the patch is obtained from equilibrium equation of patch and substrate. To demonstrate the efficiency and validity of the proposed analysis, numerical examples for cross-ply and quasi-isotropic laminates are included. The present method provides accurate stresses in the interior and near the free edges of composite laminate patches.

  • Interlaminar stresses near the free edges of composite laminates have been analyzed considering wall effects. Interface modeling of bonding layer was introduced to explain the wall effect. Using Lekhnitskii stress functions and the principle of complementary virtual work, the interlaminar stresses were obtained, which satisfied the traction free boundary conditions not only at the free edges, but also at the top and bottom surfaces of laminates. The interface modeling provides not singular stresses but concentrated finite interlaminar stresses. The significant amount of reductions of stresses at the free edge are observed compared to the results without interface modeling. The real stress state can be predicted accurately and the results demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed interface modeling for the strength design of composite laminates.

  • This paper deals with the finite element model of the monitor for the simulation of directional free drop tests such as backward, sideward, edge and vertex drop. The model was made for an unconditional stable solution for the explicit integration algorithm. The general behaviors at the time of impact were found to well correlate with the actual situation in terms of acceleration, displacement, contact force and stress of monitor components even though the experiment of the associated drop is performed for the validity of the model.

  • An exact solution procedure is formulated for the free vibration and buckling analysis of rectangular plates having two opposite edges simply supported when these edges are subjected to linearly varying normal stresses. The other two edges may be clamped, simply supported or free, or they may be elastically supported. The transverse displacement (w) is assumed as sinusoidal in the direction of loading (x), and a power series is assumed in the lateral (y) direction (i.e., the method of Frobenius). Applying the boundary conditions yields the eigenvalue problem of finding the roots of a fourth order characteristic determinant. Care must be exercised to obtain adequate convergence for accurate vibration frequencies and buckling loads, as is demonstrated by two convergence tables. Some interesting and useful results for vibration frequencies and buckling loads, and their mode shapes, are presented for a variety of edge conditions and in-plane loadings, especially pure in-plane moments.

  • For the calculation of the free-surface elevation, a new finite difference scheme is studied where the third derivative term for the wave elevation is artificially added in the Eulerian expression of the free-surface boundary condition. The paper presents a comparative analysis with simulations performed by the classical MAC method. More schematic computations are carried out by changing the submergence-depth and angle-of-attack. The present study shows that this new method is very efficient for the simulation of free-surface elevation around the trailing edge.

  • In this study, static bending of an edge cracked cantilever nanobeam composed of functionally graded material (FGM) subjected to transversal point load at the free end of the beam is investigated based on modified couple stress theory. Material properties of the beam change in the height direction according to exponential distributions. The cracked nanobeam is modelled using a proper modification of the classical cracked-beam theory consisting of two sub-nanobeams connected through a massless elastic rotational spring. The inclusion of an additional material parameter enables the new beam model to capture the size effect. The new non-classical beam model reduces to the classical beam model when the length scale parameter is set to zero. The considered problem is investigated within the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory by using finite element method. In order to establish the accuracy of the present formulation and results, the deflections are obtained, and compared with the published results available in the literature. Good agreement is observed. In the numerical study, the static deflections of the edge cracked FGM nanobeams are calculated and discussed for different crack positions, different lengths of the beam, different length scale parameter, different crack depths, and different material distributions. Also, the difference between the classical beam theory and modified couple stress theory is investigated for static bending of edge cracked FGM nanobeams. It is believed that the tabulated results will be a reference with which other researchers can compare their results.

  • In this paper, new three-dimensional vibration data for the solid cylinders of the N-sided polygonal cross-section with V-notches or sharp cracks are presented, and a Ritz procedure is employed, which incorporates a mathematically complete set of algebraic-trigonometric polynomials in conjunction with an admissible set of edge functions that explicitly model the tri-axial stress singularities that exist along a terminus edge of the V-notch. Convergence studies demonstrate the necessity of adding the edge functions to achieve the accurate frequencies and mode shapes of N-sided polygonal cylindrical solids with stress singularities.
