  • Fertilization increases the crop productivity and produces high quality seedlings for plantation. We quantitatively measured both physical performances and nutrient responses of Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Fraxinus mandshurica, Pinus koraiensis, and Abies holophylla seedlings, which are commercially planted species in Korea, to nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilization. We analyzed the growth performances by using Dickson's quality index (QI) and the nutrient status by using vector diagnosis. Nitrogen or phosphorus treatment increased height and root collar diameter growth of F. rhynchophylla and F. mandshurica, however, did not increase those of P. koraiensis and A. holophylla. The order of QI was N > P > K > control for F. rhynchophylla, P ${\geq}$ N > Control ${\geq}$ P for F. mandshurica, P > Control ${\geq}$ K > N for P. koraiensis and A. holophylla. In F. rhynchophylla, fertilization diluted N concentration in tissues by 5-25% because growth responses were higher than fertilization uptake. P. koraiensis and A. holophylla showed N excess showing "toxic accumulation". F. rhynchophylla and F. mandshurica showed P deficiency with P fertilization, however, P. koraiensis and A. holophylla showed "luxury accumulation". Vector diagnosis indicated that more fertilization was applicable for F. rhynchophylla and F. mandshurica, and high fertilization rates were inefficient for P. koraiensis and A. holophylla. Both QI and vector diagnosis can be applied to verify seedling quality in the light of growth responses and nutrient status in fertilization trials.

  • To investigate the vegetation structure of Fraxinus mandshurica communith, twenty plots were set up and surveyed in the valley of Mt. Minjuji area that rises 700~1,100m above the sea level. Each plot has 100m$^{2}$ in size. By using the TWINSPAN of classification technique, total plots was divided into six communities. In the species composition analysis, it was expected that F. mandshurica community would derive from Quercus mongolica community. The F. mondshurica community was composed together of Carpinus laxiflora, Acer mono and Cornus controversa. It was turned out that F. mandshurica community was edaphic climax because the competition species not appeared. In the DBH distribution analysis, F. mandshurica appeared through all layers, and species diversity showed lower index(Shannon's index 0.72~0.82) because the community was stable. The number of mean individuals and species was about 111.5 and 11.0 per 100m$^{2}$ respectively.

  • Physical and mechanical properties of major Korean ash species were examined. For Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Fraxinus sieboldiana, green moisture content of sapwood was almost the same value as heartwood. Heartwood of Fraxinus mandshurica, however, had slightly higher moisture content than sapwood. Green and oven dry densities of F. mandshurica were lower than those of F. rhynchophylla and F. sieboldiana. Swelling and shrinkage of sapwood in F. sieboldiana showed somewhat higher value than those of F. rhynchophylla. Longitudinal compressive strength and modulus of elasticity in F. sieboldiana were lower values than those in the other species. Shearing strength in radial section was higher than that in tangential section of all samples. It could be noted that shearing strength of F. sieboldiana demonstrated higher value than that of the other species. Three species had excellent bending properties in MOR and MOE. Impact bending absorbed energy for F. rhynchophylla and F. mandshurica did not show any significant differences.

  • Although the result of the tree height growth after water treatment, Fraxinus rhynchophylla has little affection by the artificial water treatment, the growth showed decreased tendency as the soil moisture decreased, and F. mandshurica showed high growth in relatively high soil moist $78{\sim}90%$ treated area. The growth of root collar diameter of F. rhynchophylla and F. mandshurica also showed decreased tendency as soil moisture decreased. The changes of biomass according to dry weight of root, stem, leaves of F. rhynchophylla demonstrating statistical significance as moisture contents of soil is lower showing decreased biomass tendency and in the treatment of $78{\sim}90%$(A) moisture content showed more than double the higher biomass compare to the treated area of $18{\sim}30%$(D) moisture contents. Also F. mandshurica showed statistical significance in A and D treatment demonstrating differences among each treatment. This can be purported to have physiological effects like weakening of seedling and softening of tissues including leaves as soil moisture decreased. Ultimately it is regarded to the main reason of unsatisfactory growth for F. rhynchophylla and F. mandshurica that are weak to drought resistance. SLA, which is one of the special traits of leaf area of F. rhynchophylla, didn't show statistical significance between moisture process, it demonstrated decreased tendency as the moisture content interval is minimal. LAR and LWR showed increased tendency while moisture content didn't show statistical significance between treatments as they are minimal.

  • It has been reported that there are two distinct phenotypes in Fraxinus mandshurica Rupr. growing in Korea. Recently developed polymerase chain reaction(PCR) was used to detect DNA sequence polymorphism in the species. Using a thermostable DNA polymerase and synthetic DNA primers, unknown DNA sequences from the species were randomly amplified. The two types of the species produced different DNA amplification pattern with three different primers tested. Although DNA polymorphism was detected among individuals within types, each type has its own distinct pattern. The two types could be easily differentiated by trier characteristic predominant bands.

  • Helicobacter pylori is a well-known pathogen that is responsible for gastric disorders. Overcoming of the antibiotic-resistance is a main barrier to treat H. pylori infection. In our search for anti-H. pylori compounds from natural resources, bioactivity-guided isolation on the ethyl acetate fraction of Fraxinus mandshurica bark that had shown anti-H. pylori activity gave twelve compounds (1 - 12) of six coumarins, three phenylethanoids, two secoiridoids, and a lignan using silica gel column chromatography, Sephadex-LH 20, and recrystallization. The chemical structures were identified by spectroscopic data analysis, including 1D, 2D NMR, and mass spectrometry. Among them, compounds 2, 10, and 11 showed moderate growth inhibitory activity against three strains of H. pylori, compared with positive controls of quercetin and metronidazole. Compounds 5, 6, 8, and 12 exhibited the inhibitory activity against strains 26695 or 43504. This is the first report on the anti-H. pylori activity of this plant and the isolated compounds.

  • The present study was to examine the effects of light, temperature, and water stress on the photosynthesis and respiration rates and its seasonal changes in 3-Year-old Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Fraxinus mandshurica seedlings raised in pot in nursery. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The estimated light compensation points at which net photosynthesis approached zero were 35 and $28{\mu}Em^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ for F. rhyrachophylla and F. mandsdzurica leaves, respectively, The light saturation points occurred at $700{\mu}Em^{-2}\;s^{-1}$ in these species. 2. The maximum rates of net photosynthesis of leaves occurred at about $25^{\circ}C$ in F. rhynchophylla and at $20^{\circ}C$ in F. mandshurica. 3. The decrease in net photosynthetic rates of leaves began at -13 bars in F. rhynchophylla and -10 bars in F. mandshurica, and then its rates approached approximately zero at -23 bars in F. mandshurica and -29 bars in F. rhynchophylla. 4. The dark respiration rates of leaves were similar from $10^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$ between these species, Also these increased from -10 bars to -28 bars, and then decreased remarkably in these species. 5. The net photosynthetic rates of leaves of F. mandshurica were higher than those of F. rhynchoplaylla until June, and after that lower than F. rhynchophylla. The dark respiration rates of leaves of F. rhynchophylla were higher than those of F. mandshurica from June to August, and After that similar between these species. 6. The respiration rates of stem and root were highest in April during the growing season. These values of F. rhynchophylla were slightly higher than those of F. mandshurica throughout the growing season.
