  • Purpose: The reconstruction of femur and tibia defects following tumor resection remains a surgical challenge. The clinical outcome of free vascularized fibula graft (VFG) reconstruction with locking plate for massive femur and tibia defects of more than 10 cm that were secondary to skeletal tumor resection is reported. Materials and Methods: Thirteen patients with a mean follow-up of 3.3 years were reviewed. Seven patients received vascularized fibula grafts in the femur and six in the tibia. The mean bony defect of the femur and tibia was more than 10 cm and the length of the grafted fibula was more than 15 cm. All defects were stabilized with long locking plates. Results: All patients were free of disease at final follow-up; All VFGs were transferred successfully. All patients had a successful outcome with bony union. Stress fractures of the grafted fibula had occurred but the locking plate stabilized the fracture and healed until the last follow-up. All patients were able to walk without a brace after a mean of 9 months postoperatively. Conclusion: VFG with locking plate is a reliable reconstructive procedure for massive femur and tibia defects.

  • A damage detection algorithm based on neuro fuzzy hybrid system is presented in this study for location and severity predictions of cracks in beam-like structures. A combination of eigenfrequencies and rotation deviation curves are utilized as input to the soft computing technique. Both single and multiple damage cases are considered. Theoretical expressions leading to modal properties of damaged beam elements are provided. The beam formulation is based on Euler-Bernoulli theory. The cracked section of beam is simulated employing discrete spring model whose compliance is computed from stress intensity factors of fracture mechanics. A hybrid neuro fuzzy technique is utilized to solve the inverse problem of crack identification. Two different neuro fuzzy systems including grid partitioning (GP) and subtractive clustering (SC) are investigated for the highlighted problem. Several error metrics are utilized for evaluating the accuracy of the hybrid algorithms. The study is the first in terms of 1) using the two models of neuro fuzzy systems in crack detection and 2) considering multiple damages in beam elements employing the fused neuro fuzzy procedures. At the end of the study, the developed hybrid models are tested by utilizing the noise-contaminated data. Considering the robustness of the models, they can be employed as damage identification algorithms in health monitoring of beam-like structures.

  • Durability of concrete structures is seriously compromised by cracking at early-age concretes, particularly in high-strength or high-performance concrete structures. Since early-age cracking is influenced by various factors that affect the hydration process, early-age shrinkage and stress/strain development, the behavior at early-age is highly complex and no rational methodologies for its control have yet been established. Concrete structures often present volumetrical changes particularly due to thermal and moisture related shrinkages. Volumetric instability is detrimental to the performance and durability of concrete structures because structural elements are usually restrained. These restrained shrinkages develope tensile stresses which often results in cracking in combination with the low fracture resistance of concrete. Early-age defects in high-performance concrete due to thermal and autogenous deformation shorten the life cycle of concrete structures. Thus, it is necessary to examine the behavior of early-age concrete at the stages of design and construction. The purpose of this study was to propose a shrinkage models of VES-LMC (very-early strength latex-modified concrete) at early-age considering thermal deformation and autogenous shrinkage.

  • This study aimed to develop models of sulfate diffusion and ettringite content profile in cement paste for the predication of the damage behavior in cement paste subject to external sulfate. In the models, multiphase reaction equilibrium between ions in pore solution and solid calcium aluminates phases and the microstructure changes in different positions of cement paste were taken into account. The distributions of expansive volume strain and expansion stress in cement paste were calculated based on the ettringite content profile model. In addition, more sulfate diffusion tests and SEM analyses were determined to verify the reliability and veracity of the models. As the results shown, there was a good correlation between the numerical simulation results and experimental evidences. The results indicated that the water to cement ratio (w/c) had a significant influence on the diffusion of sulfate ions, ettringite concentration profile and expansion properties in cement paste specimens. The cracking points caused by ettringite growth in cement paste specimens were predicted through numerical methods. According to the simulation results, the fracture of cement paste would be accelerated when the specimens were prepared with higher w/c or when they were exposed to sulfate solution with higher concentration.

  • Adhesive-bonded joints are widely used in the industry. Recently, applications of adhesive bonding joints have been increased extensively in automobile and aircraft industry. The strength of adhesive joints is influenced by the surface roughness, adhesive shape, stress distribution, and etc. However, the magnitude of the influence has not yet been clarified because of the complexity of the phenomena. In this study, as the fundamental research of adhesive bonding joints, the effects of adhesive shape and loading speed on bonding strength properties and durability of aluminum to polycarbonate single-lap joints were studied. To evaluate the effect of adhesive shape, several modified shapes were used, and loading speeds were varied from 0.05 to 5 mm/min. As a result, the load-displacement distribution was shown a brittle fracture tendency. The trigonal edged single lap and bevelled lap joints showed the higher strength than the plain single lap, trigonal single lap, joggle lap and double lap joints in same adhesive area. The fractures of trigonal single lap and trigonal edged single lap joints that had the higher strength level were shown as the mixture type of the cohesive and interfacial-failure, mostly joggle lap joints that had the lower strength level were shown as the adhesive-failure.

  • Under general loadings, including body forces, crack-face tractions and thermal loading, the energy release rate equation for a two-dimensional cracked body is presented. Defining the virtual crack extension as the variation of the geometry, the equation is directly derived by a shape design sensitivity of the potential energy. Although the form of the derived energy release rate equation is different from other researchers's results, the three example show that the former is exactly the same as the latter. However, the final integral equation do not involve the derivative of the displacement on the crack surface and crack tip region, thereby improving the numerical accuracy in the computation of the energy relase rate. Moreover, as it was derived from the governing equation including non-linear elasticity without special assumptions, the energy release rate of a elasto-plastic fracture can be obtained and any numerical stress analysis method can be applied.

  • To assess the integrity of the pipeline is the most important problem to be solved first of all for prevention of any fracture accident of the pipeline. As a result of exerting such efforts, a number of plastic collapse assessment equations have been suggested, however, the scope of using or applying such assessment equations has not been exactly defined. In this study, the case that a surface crack existed in the circumferential direction in the external side of the natural gas pipeline and a bending load was applied to the pipeline was analytically identified as the most critical condition, and a plastic collapse assessment equation fur it was suggested. The flow stress of the API X65 linepipe was defined through the experiment conducted on SENT specimens. Also, a local assessing criterion of a 3-dimensional crack behavior considering not only the crack depth but also the crack length was suggested. Finally, a plastic collapse assessment equation for the API X65 linepipe was developed by performing the 3-dimensional finite element analysis.

  • Fatigue is a process of progressive permanent internal structural change in a material subjected to repeitive stresses. These change may be damaging and result in progressive growth of cracks and complete fracture if the stress repetitins are sufficiently large. For structural members subjected to cyclic loads, the continuous and irrecoverable damage processes are taking place. These processes are referred as the cumulative damage processes due to fatigue loading. Moreover, increased use of high strength concrete makes the fatigue problem more important because the cross-section and dead weight are reduced by using high strength concrete. The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear fatigue behavior of reinforced concrete beams according to shear reinforcement ratio and concrete compressive strength under repeated loadings. For this purpose, comprehensive static and fatigue tests of reinforced concrete beams were conducted. The major test variables for the fatigue teats are the concrete strength and the amount of shear reinforcements. The increase of deflections and steel strains according to load repetition has been plotted and analyzed to explore the damage accumulation phenomena of reinforced concrete beams. An analytical model for shear fatigue behavior has been introduced to analyze the damage accumulation under fatigue loads. The failure mode and fatigue lives have been also studied in the present study. The comparisons between analytical results and experimental data show good correlation.

  • Impact behaviors of Aluminum Honeycombs Sandwich Panel(AHSP) by drop weight test were investigated. Two types of specimens with 1/2" and 1/4" cell size were tested by two impactors which are weight of $5.25\textrm{kg}_{\textrm{f}}$ and $11.9\textrm{kg}_{\textrm{f}}$. Parametric studies were achieved including the impactor weight and impact sites which consist face, long-edge, short-edge, and point of the specimen. Face one of impact sites was the strongest and short-edge one of impact sites was the weakest. The damaged area of AHSP was enlarged with the increase of impactor weight that is equal to impact energy. After 3 point bending test, fracture modes of AHSP were analyzed with AE counts. Lower facesheet was fractured in the long-edge direction and then separated between facesheet and core. In the short-edge direction after core wrinkled, lower facesheet tear occurred. Impact behavior by FE analysis were increased localized damage in fast velocity because the faster velocity of the impact was, the smaller the stress of core was. Consequently, impactor weight had an effect on widely damaged area, while the impact velocity was caused on the localized damaged area.aged area.

  • The elastic plastic fracture toughness of this material is evaluated by the an unloading compliance method according to the ASTM E813-97 and E1152-97 method on the smooth and side groove 1CT specimens. The effect of smooth and side groove is studied on the material tearing modulus and characterizes the crack tip field under the plane stress and strain. SG-365 steel is observed that J-R curve and Tmat value decrease as 0%, 20%, 30%, and 40%. The 40% side grooved specimen is very useful in estimation of the $J_IC$. Because it is much easier than the smooth specimen to the onset of the ductile tearing by the R curve method. Besides. it improves the accuracy of toughness values, decreases the scattering the them and tunneling and shear lip by the side groove. Applicability of tearing modulus($T_J$ proposed by paris et al as instability panameter for this material is investigated.
