  • One important element of the Leak-Before-Break analysis of nuclear piping is how to determine relevant fracture toughness (or the J-resistance curve) for nonlinear fracture mechanics analysis. The practice to use fracture toughness from a standard C(T) specimen is known to often give conservative estimates of toughness. To improve the accuracy, this paper proposes a new method to determine fracture toughness using a nonstandard testing specimen, curved wide-plate in tension. To show validity of the proposed curved wide-plate test, the J-resistance curve from the full-scale pipe test is compared with that from the curved wide-plate test and that from the C(T) specimen. It is shown that the J-resistance curve form the curved wide-plate tension test is similar to, but that from the C(T) specimen is lower than, the J-resistance curve from the full-scale pipe test. Further validation is performed by investigating crack-tip constraint conditions via detailed 3-D FE analyses, which shows that the crack-tip constraint condition in the curved wide-plate tension specimen is indeed similar to that in the full-scale pipe under bending.

  • The shape of K-R curve for an ideally brittle material is flat because the surface energy is an unvaried material property. However, the K-R curve can take on a variety of shapes when nonlinear material behavior accompanies fracture. By the way, a general metallic material is nonlinear, structural steel is such. Therefore, the J-R curve form J-integral value instead of K parameters can be used to evaluate elastic-plastic materials with flaws in terms of ductile fracture that can be significant to design. In this paper, R-curve behaviors form K and J parameter is considered for the precise assessment of fracture analysis, in case of JS-SS400 steels.

  • In order to perform elastic-plastic fracture mechanical analyses, fracture resistance curves for concerned materials are required. The unloading compliance method and the DCPD(Direct Current Potential Drop) method have been widely used for measuring the crack length and the extension for a standard specimen fracture resistance curve test. However it is difficult to apply the unloading compliance method to a real pipe fracture resistance curve test. The objective of this paper is to propose the calibration equation between the normalized crack length and the normalized electric potential, and to apply to pipe fracture experiments. For these, finite element analyses were performed with various current input locations and crack front configurations. Also the 4-point bending jig was manufactured for a pipe test and the DCPD method was used to measure crack extensions and crack lengths for a pipe test. The calculated crack length by the DCPD method agreed with the measured crack length within 5% error.

  • Carbon powders (CP) and carbon fiber (CF) were introduced info glass fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) composites to obtain fracture detection function. The composites were evaluated through the relation between a load-displacement curve and an electrical resistance change curve in three point bending test. CP containing FRP (CP-FRP) has a sensitivity of electrical resistance change at much lower load level than CF containing FRP (CF-FRP). In loading-unloading tests, CP-FRP showed a large amount of residual electrical resistance which enables the estimation of loading hysteresis.

  • The elastic-plastic fracture toughness($J_{IC}$) and fracture resistance (J-R curve) of SA508-3 alloy steel used for nuclear reactor pressure vessel are investigated by using CT-type specimens. Fracture toughness tests are conducted by unloading compliance method and multiple specimen method at room temperature, -2$0^{\circ}C$ and 20$0^{\circ}C$. The apparent negative crack growth phenomenon which usually arises in partial unloading compliance test is well known. The negative crack growth phenomenon in determining J sub(IC) or J-R cure from partial unloading compliance experiments may be eliminated by the offset technique. In this study, the evaluation of $J_{IC}$ multiple specimen method recommended by the JSME gives the most reliable results by using half-size CT(similar-type) specimens.

  • In this work, the effect of surface treatment of prepreg on the mode I fracture behavior was studied. Unidirectional (0-deg) double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens were used for fracture tests. Two groups of DCB specimens were made: the first group was made of prepregs surface-treated by Ar(sup)+ ion beam under oxygen environment and the second group was made of regular prepregs. For both groups, fracture resistance curve (R-curve) was determined and compared to each other, Results showed that resistance behavior of the first group is better than that of the second group. That is, mode I fracture toughness, G(sub)Ic of the first group is 24% larger than that of the second group. SEM examination shows that the improvement of G(sub)Ic is due to the increase of interfacial strength between plies.

  • In order perform leak-before-break design of nuclear piping systems and integrity evaluation of reactor vessels, full stress-strain (.sigma. - .epsilon.) curves and fracture resistance (J-R) curves are required. However it is time-consuming and expensive to obtain J-R curves experimentally. The objective of this paper is to develop two methods for J-R curve prediction. In the first method, elastic-plastic finite element analyses for a series of crack length / specimen width ratio were performed. Accordingly the load versus load line displacement (P .delta.) curve corresponding to the fracture strain is obtained and the J-R curve based on the generalized locus method is obtained. In the second method, the correlation between .sigma.-.epsilon. curves and J-R curves was statistically analyzed and an empirical equation to predict the J-R curve from the .sigma.-.epsilon. test result is proposed. A good correlation between the predicted results based on the proposed methods and the experimental ones is obtained.

  • Continuous fiber ceramic composites(CPCCs) having the advantages of ceramics resistance to heat, eroson can be applied in chemical reactors and engine. CFCCs has relatively high stiffness in spite of low weight. In particular, it exhibits greatly increased toughness, which serves to decrease its inherent damage characteristics of the brittle nature of monolithic ceramics. In this wort, tensile and flexural test for SCS6 fiber/ $Si_3N_4$ matrix composites were studied. An objective of this study is to obtain the basic quantities of mechanical properties for tension and flexural test and link these to the fracture resistance behavior. Then, we showed that wok of fracture concept was useful as a method for describing fracture restance behavior of CFCCs.

  • In order to perform leak-before-break design of nuclear piping systems and integrity evaluation of reactor vessels, full stress-strain curves and fracture resistance (J-R) curves are required. However it is time-consuming and expensive to obtain J-R curves experimentally. The objective of this paper is to modify two J-R curve prediction methods previously proposed by the authors and to propose an additional J-R curve prediction method for nuclear piping materials. In the first method which is based on the elastic-plastic finite element analysis, a blunting region handling procedure is added to the existing method. In the second method which is based on the empirical equation, a revised general equation is proposed to apply to both carbon steel and stainless steel. Finally, in the third method, both full stress-strain curve and finite element analysis results are used for J-R curve prediction. A good agreement between the predicted results based on the proposed methods and the experimental ones is obtained.

  • Fracture resistance curves for concerned materials are required in order to perform elastic-plastic fracture mechanical analyses. Fracture resistance curve is built with J-integral values and crack extension values. The objective of this paper is to apply the load ratio method to the measurement of the crack length for the real scale pipe specimen. For these, the fracture test using the real scale pipe specimen and finite element analyses were performed. A 4-point bending jig was manufactured for the pipe test and the direct current potential drop method and the load ratio method was used to measure the crack extension and the length for the real scale pipe test. Finite element analyses about the compliance of the pipe specimen were executed for applying the load ratio method according to the crack length.
