The mechanics of woven fabric-based laminated composites is complex. Then, many researchers have studied woven fabric CFRP materials but fracture resistance behaviors for composites have not been still standardized. It also shows the different behavior according to load and fiber direction. Therefore, there is a need to consider fracture resistance behavior in conformity with load and fiber direction at designing structure using woven CFRP materials. In this study, therefore, the tensile strength and resistance for plain-weave CFRP composite materials were investigated under various different angle condition(load to fiber angle: $0^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$). Tensile strength and fracture toughness tests were carried out under mode I transverse crack opening load by using compact tension specimens.
Thermal shock test methods and thermal shock parameters for ceramics were reviewed from the following viewpoints: (1) The test methods should be based on the precise estimation of both temperature and thermal stress distributions in a specimen taking into account the temperature-dependent thermo-mechanical properties; (2) The thermal shock parameters must be defined as a physical property of the materials and described as a function of temperature at the fracture point of the specimen; (3) The relation between the strength and fracture toughness of brittle ceramics under a thermal shock load must be the same as the relation under a mechanical load. In addition, appropriate thermal shock parameters should be defined by the thermal shock strength and thermal shock fracture toughness based on stress and energy criteria, respectively. A constant heat flux method is introduced as a testing technique suitable for estimating these thermal shock parameters directly from the electric power charged.
It is well known that mechanisms of fracture and crack growth depend upon material characteristics such as fracture toughness, environmental condition, cracd geometry and mechanical properties. It seems to be very important to investihate the effects of the above factors on the behavior of structural components which contain flaws for the detailed evaluation of their intehrity. In this experimental research, fracture behaviors of moterials were investigated by using Acoustic Emission(AE) technique. The fracturing processes of materials were estimated through both the tension specimens. For the detrmlnatlon of yied strength or fracture toughness, the critical applied load at the crack initiation and propagation is thought to be very important. The critical applied load(PQ) was determined through AE signal. The source of AE signal was estimated by fractography analysis. These experimental results may contribute to the safety analyses and the evaluation of strength of structures.

This investigation evaluates effects of notch depth, fatigue precrack length and side groove in impact specimen for estimation of a valid K1d by instrumented Charpy impact test. Specimen material is 6005-T6. for notch depth 2.0mm and 2.5mm specimens or within about 2mm fatigue precrack length with notch depth 2.0mm and 2.5mm specimens or within about 2mm fatigue precrack length with notch depth 2.0mm , dynamic fracture toughness [$K_{1d,(1)}$] obtained by crack initiation load($P_m$) should be used. Dynamic fracture toughness of side grooved specimens are overestimated to that of standard impact specimen about 15 %-20%. It is confirmed that the formula of dynamic fracture toughness obtained by impact absorbed energy is inappropriate for ductile materials.
The various deformation and fracture behaviors under light loads in soda-lime glass under sliding Vickers indentation have been studied. In soda-lime glass, deformation and fracture behaviors can be classified into four different patterns by applied load. At very light load (<0.1N), plastic deformation only occurred. At low loads (0.1~0.8N), median crack, appear. At intermediate loads (0.8~3.0N), median and lateral cracking occurred leading to a large chipping. At high loads (3.0~6.0N), a crushed zone was observed with median crack. The friction experiment finds that the increasing in the friction coefficients coincides with the onset of crushing in soda-lime glass.

In the case of Ni/Au finished pad on the package side, the solder joint of SnAgCu system can bring brittle fracture under impact load such as drop test. Therefore, it's difficult to prevent the brittle fracture of lead-free solder, by controlling Cu content. The failure locus existing on the interface between $(Ni,Cu)_3Sn_4\;and\;(Cu,Ni)_6Sn_5$ IMC layers must be changed to other site in order to avoid brittle fracture due to impact load. It was not found any clear evidence that there were two IMC layers exist. But it was strongly assumed these were two layers which have different Cu-Ni composition. From the above analysis it was assumed that Cu atom in the solder alloy or substrate seemed to affect IMC composition and cause to IMC brittle fracture.
Alumina composite reinforced by chopped alumina fiber was fabricated by filter-pressing the fiber slurry followed by the infiltration of alumina slurry. The chopped fiber was coated with nickel by electroless plating method. The green samples were densified by hot-pressing. Microstructures were studied by SEM and the mechanical properties such as bending strength and fracture toughness were measured. The resulting mechanical properties were analyzed in relation with processing parameters such as preform density and resulting microstructures. The load-displacement curve of the specimen with Ni interlayer but without Ni inclusion showed brittle fracture mode due to the direct contact between matrix and fiber. The load-displacement curve of the specimen with Ni interlayer and Ni inclusion in the matrix which is introduced by high applied pressure during specimen preparation showed non-brittle fracture mode due to the fiber pull-out and dutile phases in the matrix.

Acoustic emission(AE) measurement was carried out to evaluate the fracture behavior of high tension steel. Fracture toughness $K_{AE}$ could be determined reasonably by using the load value corresponding to an abrupt change of the accumulated AE counts AE emitted from the test specimens. AE characteristics of the base metal, the weld metal and the heat-affected zone could be distinguished using a constant value b which represented the AE amplitude distribution, Consequently the structure integrity can be evaluated by variation of the constant b at the load level. In addition it was found that AE signals due to crack growth have high amplitude but low rise time and duration.
Rubber-modified epoxy resins have been employed as adhesive and matrix materials for glass and corbon-fiber composites. The behavior of fracture around a crack tip for rubber-modified epoxy resin is investigated through the acoustic emission (AE) analysis of compact tension specimens. Damage zone and rubber particles distributed around a crack tip were observed by a polarized optical microscope and an atomic force microscope (AFM). The damage zone in front of pre-crack tip in rubber-modified specimen $(15wt\%\; rubber)$ began to form at about $13\%$ level of the fracture load and grew in size until $57\%$ load level. After that, the crack propagated in a stick-slip manner. Based on time-frequency analysis of AE signals and microscopic observation of damage zone, it was thought that AE signals with frequency bands of 0.15-0.20 MHz and 0.200.30 MHz were generated from cavitation in the damage zone and crack propagation, respectively.
To investigate wall-thinning impact on axial load resistance of Zircaloy-4 cladding rods after a LOCA transient, axial tensile samples have been machined on as-received tubes with reduced thicknesses between 370 and 580 ㎛. After high temperature oxidation under steam at 1200 ℃ with measured ECR ranging from 10 to 18% and water quenching, machined samples were axially loaded until fracture. These tests were modeled using a fracture mechanics approach developed in a previous study. Fracture stresses are rather well predicted. However, the slightly lower fracture stress observed for wall-thinned samples is not anticipated by this modeling approach. The results from this study confirm that characterizing the axial load resistance using semi-integral tests including the creep and burst phases was the best option to obtain accurate axial strengths describing accurately the influence of wall-thinning at burst region.
