  • The enhancement of service life of damaged or cracked structures is currently major issue to the researchers and engineers. In order to improve the life of cracked aging aircraft structures, the repair technique which uses adhesively bonded boron/epoxy composite patches is being widely considered as a cost-effective and reliable method. This paper is to study the performance of the bonded composite patch repair of a plate containing an inclined central through-crack. A 3-dimensional finite element method having three layers to the cracked plate, composite patch and adhesive layer, is used to compute the stress intensity factor. In this paper, the reduction of stress intensity factors near the crack-tip are determined to evaluate the effects of various non-dimensional design parameter including composite patch thickness, and material properties of the composite patch and thickness of the adhesive layer, materials of patch etc., and the crack length, Finally, The problem of how to optimize the patch geometric configurations has been discussed.

  • Recently, the structural failures due to fatigue occur frequently with the increase of size of ships and offshore structures. In this respect, the assessment of fatigue life and the residual strength are very important. Currently, the smart materials technology has demonstrated a variety of possibilities for a diagnosis of structural strength and structural health condition for large structures. The benefits and feature of the MFC sensor are more flexible, durable and reliable than conventional smart material. In this study, Micro Fiber Composite (MFC) sensor for the measurement of stress intensity factor (SIF) of two dimensional cracks induced in a structure is developed. Two MFC sensors are placed in the vicinity of the crack tip close to each other with the crack tip in between them. The SIFs of Mode I($K_I$) as well as of Mode II($K_{II}$) based on the piezoelectric constitutive law and fracture mechanics are calculated. In this study, the SIF values measured by MFC sensors are compared with the theoretical results and measured value.

  • When a variety of repeated loads are given, most steel structures failed in much lower level of loads than static failure loads. In addition, bridge always includes the internal defects or discontinuities. from these, fatigue cracks initiates and can lead to sudden failure. Thus, in this study, tensile specimens by the cover plate shapes were used as the test specimens. The fatigue test was performed by constant amplitude fatigue loading and beach mark. From the results of this study, each specimen's fatigue section was observed. in addition, stress intensity factor at crack tip was calculated by using the Green's function which applied to discontinuous section where causing stress concentration. Therefore, the fatigue life of structural detail was investigated by adopting the theories of fracture mechanics. each specimen's crack shape is a semi-elliptical surface crack or center crack sheet, stress gradient correction factor, Fg is the most subjective of all stress intensity correction factors and fatigue life should be predicted by previous proposed function and finite element analysis.

  • This paper proposes elastic stress intensity factors and crack opening displacements (CODs) for a slanted axial through-wall cracked cylinder under an internal pressure based on detailed 3-dimensional (3-D) elastic finite element (FE) analyses. Based on the elastic FE results, the stress intensity factors along the crack front and CODs through the thickness at the center of the crack were provided. These values were also tabulated for three selected points, i.e., the inner and outer surfaces and at the mid-thickness. The present results can be used to evaluate the crack growth rate and leak rate of a slanted axial through-wall crack due to stress corrosion cracking and fatigue. Moreover, the present results can be used to perform a detailed Leak-Before-Break analysis considering more realistic crack shape development.

  • Pitting wear is a dominant form of polyethylene surface damage in total knee replacements, and may originate from surface cracks that propagate under repeated tribological contact. In this study, stress intensity factors, $K_{I}$ and $K_{II}$, were calculated for a surface crack in a polyethylene - CoCr - bone system under the rolling and/or sliding contact pressures. Crack length and load location were considered in determination of probable crack propagation mechanisms and fracture modes. Positive $K_{I}$ values were obtained for shorter cracks in rolling contact and for all crack lengths when the sliding load was apart from the crack. $K_{II}$, was the greatest when the load was directly adjacent to the crack $(g/a={\pm}1)$. Sliding friction caused a substantial increase of both $K_{I}^{max}$ and $K_{II}^{max}$. The effective Mode I stress intensity factors, $K_{eff}$, were the greatest at $g/a={\pm}1$, showing the significance of high shear stresses generated by loads adjacent to surface cracks. Such behavior of $K_{eff}$ suggests mechanisms for surface pitting by which surface cracks may propagate along their original plane under repeated rolling or sliding contact.

  • Variable thickness plates are commonly encountered in the majority of mechanical/structural components of industrial applications. And, as a result of the unsymmetry of the structure or the load and the anisoptropy of the materials, the cracks in engineering structures are generally subjected to combined stresses. In spite of considerable practical interest, however, a few fracture mechanics study on combined mode crack in a variable thickness plate have carried out. In this respect, combined mode 1/3 stress intensity factors $K_{1}$ and $K_{3}$ at the crack tip for a variable thickness plate were obtained by 3-dimensional finite element analysis. Variable thickness plates containing a central slant crack were chosen. the parameters used in this study were dimensionless crack length .lambda. crack slant angle .alpha, thickness ratio .betha. and width ratio .omega. Stress intensity factors were calculated by crack opening displacement(COD) and crack tearing displacement(CTD) method proposed by Ingraffea and Manu. The effect of thickness ratio .betha. on $K_{1}$ is relatively great in comparison to $K_{3}$.

  • In this paper, the fatigue behaviour of typical axisymmetric forward extrusion die is investigated and extrusion process is analyzed by the rigid-plastic finite element method and elasto-plastic finite element method. To approach the crack problem involving crack initiation and propagation in extrusion die, LEFM(Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics) is introduced and singular element which models stress.strain singularity in the crack tip vincity has been used to obtain an accurate stress intensityu factor values and other results. Form the displacement around the crack tip the stress intensity factor and the effective stress intensity factor at the beginning of the die inlet radius has been calculated. Applying proper fatigue crack propagation criterion such as Paris/Erdogan fatigue law to this data the angle and direction of fatigue crack growth has been simulated and these are compared with some experimental results. Using the computed crack growth rate, fatigue life of the extrusion die has been evaluated.

  • It is important to calculate the exact crack opening area in the cracked pipe subjected to axial force and bending moment. Among many solutions for obtaining the crack opening displacement, Paris-Tada's expression, which is derived from energy method, is open used in fracture analysis for piping crack problems because of its simplicity. But Paris-Tada's equation has conservativeness when radius over thickness ratio(R/t) is ten or less, for it is based on the stress intensity factor solution having a compliance function derived from a simple shell theory. In this paper we derived a new expression using a different stress intensity factor solution which is able to consider the variation of compliance through wall thickness in a cracked pipe. Conservativeness of both equations was examined and compared to finite element analysis results. Conservativeness of the new equation is decreased when R/t > 10 and increased slightly when R/t < 10 compared with Paris-Tada's. But Both equations were highly conservative when R/t < 10 compared with finite element analysis results.

  • Rencentely, the request for the light weight is more incresed in the area of industrial environment and machinery and consistent effort is needed to accomplish high strength of material for the direction of light weight. we got the following characteristic from crack growth test carried out in the range of stress ration of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.6 by means of opening mode displacement. At the content stress ratio, the threshold stress intensity factor crack range ${\Delta}K_{th}$in the early stage of fatigue crack growth (Region I) and dtress intensity factor range ${\Delta}K$ in the stable of fatigue crack growth (Region II) with an increase in ${\Delta}K$. Fatigue life shows more improvement in the Shot-peened material than in the Un-peening material. And compressive residual stress of surface on the Shot peening processed operate resistance force of fatigue. So we can obtain fallowings. (1) The fatigue crack growth rate on stage II is conspicuous with the size of compressive residual stress and is depend on Paris equation. (2) Although the maxium compressive residual stress is deeply and widely formed from surface, fatigue life does not improve than when maxium compressive residual stress is formed in surface. (3) The threshold stress intensity factor range is increased with increasing compressive residual stress.
